Overview
Bottom rule

Tame the explosion of unstructured content with content-enabled applications, while spending less to manage that content.

Faced with an explosion of unstructured content, organizations are increasingly striving to harness it through content collection and archival, records management, enterprise search, or automated business processes. Yet in doing so, they run into adoption barriers as they discover that these new applications impose significant end-user burden to classify content. Enterprise Content Management (ECM) initiatives rely upon end users to decide how to classify, categorize, and tag information. They impart a small, but measurable cost (17 cents per document cost according to Cohasset Associates) on their organization if the users even bother to participate in the manual classification task at all.

Though these new applications aspire to increase revenue, improve productivity, and generally cut costs by getting more use from content, they incur new productivity costs with every manual classification task placed on the end user, which can snowball to hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for a mid-sized organization, stifling the return on investment on these initiatives and distracting employees from their key responsibilities.

IBM Classification Module V8.6 addresses these issues. Through its advanced classification methods, the Classification Module shifts the intelligence and cost burden away from employees by automating content-centric, daily categorization decisions via analysis of the full text of documents and e-mails.

With IBM Classification Module you can slash the costs of categorizing information from 17 cents per document to less than 1 cent per document. In doing so, you are more rapidly organizing the content for the high-value applications that are driving your investment in ECM.

Shifting the classification burden away from users cuts costs while simultaneously accelerating the rate at which new content-enabled applications harness the explosion of unstructured content and provides returns on ECM investment.

Description
Bottom rule

Accelerating time-to-value of your Enterprise Content Management (ECM) investment with IBM Classification Module

IBM Classification Module automates the process of categorizing your content by reading and understanding the full text of your content. As part of the IBM ECM architecture, the Classification Module saves time, gets more content under management faster, and accelerates the return on your investment in ECM.

Value of classification

Analysts estimate that the volume of unstructured content such as e-mail, presentations, contracts, and forms will nearly double annually. Faced with this explosion of content, a reliable method for organizing it becomes critical. By investing in an enterprise content management platform, you are committing to cataloguing and classifying your organization's content, whether you are encouraging content re-use, establishing records management practices, or improving a business process.

Managing these documents means making many decisions about the content every day. These decisions that your end users are likely to be unwilling or unable to make consistently. The IBM Classification Module can accurately and automatically organize information so that it is not only more accessible and more leverageable, but also helps reduce your risk and costs. Automating the classification of your content means you can get more out of your ECM system, with less time and money invested.

Furthermore, classification can be used to make a more basic decision - whether to manage an item or not. By filtering out e-mails about lunch appointments or documents that do not hold any business value, for example, you can save on costs and keep your ECM infrastructure focused on the right content.

Learning by understanding

While it can organize information by policies or key words, a strength of the IBM Classification Module approach is its ability to assign metadata based on the full context of the document. It is not just searching for a single word or phrase, but analyzing the entire document, discerning the topics in the text, then assigning it to a category. And it will not be fooled by misspellings, abbreviations, short-hand, or technical terms.

IBM Classification Module adapts to the unique nature of your business because it learns to identify different categories from examples you provide to it. And as you provide feedback on its performance, it adjusts in real time, immediately taking into account corrections you have made. In this way, its accuracy keeps pace with your business, rapidly adjusting to changes in your business as they occur.

Furthermore, it can combine this context-based approach, with basic rule-based classification approaches. So the system can identify keywords, patterns (such as account numbers, phone numbers of case identifiers) and even two words within a certain proximity of each other. For instance, it can identify and classify documents with the phrase Attorney General in the same sentence as California.

The solution can classify content in fifteen languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese (Simple and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Hebrew, Russian, Arabic, and Farsi. IBM Classification Module provides basic support for other languages.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be requested via the IBM Web site

http://www.ibm.com/able/product_accessibility/index.html

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Charge metrics definitions

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor families (vendors and brands). A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on the level or tier of all processor cores activated and available for use by the Program on the server. Some programs allow licensing to less than the full capacity of the server's activated processor cores, sometimes referred to as sub-capacity licensing. For programs which offer sub-capacity licensing, if a server is partitioned utilizing eligible partitioning technologies, then a PoE must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition where the program runs or is managed by the program. Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Terms or the program's License Information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms. The PVU entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another program.

For general overview of PVUs for processor families (vendors and brands), go to

http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

To calculate the exact PVU entitlements required for the program, go to

Eligibility requirements for sub-capacity licensing

To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub-capacity terms.

For those machines running programs with sub-capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub-capacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub-capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub-capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a primary business contact is established for their contracts.

For more information on required and entitled license capacity, license requirements, and reporting, refer to Software Announcement 205-093, dated April 19, 2005.

If you order (this product) under sub capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub capacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager.
