IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack is a continuous data protection and recovery management platform for Windows® servers and applications that run on Windows, such as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL, and Oracle. It provides a data protection and recovery solution for mission-critical applications, in the data center, remote branch offices, and for small businesses. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack helps eliminate the need for traditional backup windows by continuously capturing data change at the block level, with extremely low overhead on the systems it helps protect. Its flexible policy engine enables administrators to improve recovery service levels to meet data protection and retention requirements on a per-application basis. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack also provides an instant restore capability that enables applications to be up and running within minutes following any data loss, while full data recovery is performed in the background.

Adaptive solution, blending continuous, frequent, and scheduled protection

Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack allows you to set and achieve Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) on a per-application basis by setting the frequency of backups, up to continuous data protection. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack uses a block level, incremental forever approach to data protection that has a very low impact on protected servers and applications, and can eliminate backup windows. Block level incremental forever means that the first snapshot of a volume will be a "full" snapshot (all the used blocks of this volume will be copied). From that point on, only incremental snapshots will occur, so only blocks that have changed will be copied. This allows for a very storage-efficient repository.

Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack is a software-based solution and does not rely on any particular hardware to enable continuous data protection or snapshots. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack enables LAN-based and SAN-based backup; with SAN backup, the impact of backups is removed from the LAN. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack has the ability to read and write data directly from a SAN (bypassing the server that is being protected), offering a unique server-free and network-free backup technology.

Comprehensive protection for Windows servers and applications running on Windows

Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack provides continuous data protection and snapshots for Windows applications. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack is an adaptive protection solution that allows you to proactively address changing business needs with any combination of continuous, frequent, and scheduled approaches to data protection based on the application or data profile - while supporting fast, granular recovery of data. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack provides data retention policies to help you meet corporate governance mandates. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack uses block-level incremental forever snapshot technology to copy new and changed data in a non-disruptive manner, helping eliminate the need to close files and shut down applications in order to accomplish data protection tasks. This allows organizations to achieve 24-hour operation of their critical systems. Even more important is the way application recovery is conducted by Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack. Whether you need to recover a single lost e-mail message (Exchange) or a corrupted SQL or Oracle table, a file folder or a complete volume, or to perform Bare Machine Recovery (BMR) to recover a system disk, all are available in this unique technology with a near-instant restore and immediate access to application data.

Helps reduce the costs associated with remote branch office data protection while addressing recovery time objectives recovery time objectives (RTO) and RPO

Maintaining skilled technical staff at remote sites, handling tapes, locally initiating restores, and ensuring that backups are successful, can be very costly and error prone to a business with multiple remote locations. Businesses with remote sites often have the additional costs of having to maintain tape backup systems from different vendors, requiring different skills and backup processes. Beyond costs, there are performance drawbacks to using tape backup at remote locations. Tape can introduce delays and may not allow remote offices to meet RTO and RPO. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack can help eliminate these costs and performance issues by providing a disk-to-disk (D2D) solution that can replace the use of tape at these sites and provide visibility into branch operations with centralized management of remotely distributed data. It can also integrate with Tivoli Storage Manager to leverage your current investment and take advantage of Tivoli Storage Manager's tape optimization technologies and data management capabilities as well as provide an intermediary disk-based layer (D2D2T) for fast backup and recovery capabilities. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack provides a centrally managed interface that enables monitoring.

Intelligent disaster recovery

A remote office data protection solution should include the ability to recover following any type of data loss. The local backup and recovery capabilities of Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack address the loss of data at the application, server, or storage level, including accidental deletion, virus attacks, and device failures. But businesses also should be able to recover when an entire site, including the local Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack server, is affected by a service outage. To allow an off-site copy of data to perform disaster recovery and business continuance, Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack allows you to selectively replicate data between remote offices, data centers, and disaster recovery sites. This is accomplished by providing policy-based levels of protection, granularity, and security while keeping the impact on systems and WAN bandwidth to a minimum. The ability to Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack to create multiple, geographically disbursed backup copies for disaster recovery purposes is generally a less costly alternative to manually shipping tape cartridges.

Selective RPO and retention

With Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack's policy-based approach to disaster recovery, you can select on a per-application basis, the frequency of sending disaster recovery data across the network. For applications that are considered mission critical and in need of the most stringent protection, you can replicate data for disaster recovery purposes as often as you need. For less critical data, you can conserve bandwidth and create a policy for disaster recovery that replicates that data less frequently and during off-peak hours. This adaptive approach to replicating disaster recovery data that matches the value of the data to a policy based replication approach can result in significantly less impact on your network and storage requirements. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack also allows you to create policies on a per application basis that determines how long to keep each disaster recovery data set based on the needs of each application.

Data reduction

Using an incremental-forever model that can reduce the amount of data, Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack can achieve data reduction metrics similar to data deduplication solutions, when compared to performing full backup of server data to tape. The policy engine also helps to reduce the amount of data stored and sent over the WAN or Internet to only what is needed to support business requirements.

Scheduling

Data transfers over the WAN or Internet are scheduled to make the most effective use of your available bandwidth and help limit the impact on other applications. Since the amount of data that Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack transfers usually is very small, depending on the amount of data changed between disaster recovery transfers, the transfer window needed is generally very short.

Compression

Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack uses industry-standard compression during the transfer of the disaster recovery data, which is a selectable option that can reduce the amount of data transferred by as much as 50%. The decision to use compression is based on the trade-off between available processing power and network bandwidth.

Latency reduction

Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack automatically bundles large numbers of small files for replication to dramatically reduce the latency overhead associated with TCP/IP file transfers.

Unparalled recovery times

Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack has a restore technology that allows near-instant recovery. With Tivoli Storage Manager, it's easy to extract any file or application object (such as an e-mail) from the stored data blocks of any stored snapshot. Administrators can mount a snapshot virtually to a drive letter, allowing validation of the backup data and file-level and folder-level restore. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack even makes volume restore more efficient by providing several ways to restore data. In addition to traditional volume restores, Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack has a instant feature restore feature that can dramatically reduce RTO. The restore feature lets users use data on the same disk where the volume is being restored - while the restore operation is still in progress. This means the administrator can allow access to data for users, while the restore occurs in the background. Users can see and access information, which signals to the restore process to make this information a priority, while data not being used is restored later in the process. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack file system view into the backup repository allows click-drag-drop recovery of any file or folder, greatly simplifying the ease of recovery.

Integration with Tivoli Storage Manager

Customers are facing a data and information explosion throughout their enterprise. As a result, customers want a more holistic and integrated data protection solutions to help ensure comprehensive data recovery, business continuity, and to address compliance both across their data centers and remote offices. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack, together with Tivoli Storage Manager, delivers exactly that solution today. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack is integrated with the Tivoli Storage Manager server to allow Tivoli Storage Manager to recover the Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack server in a disaster recovery scenario. The Tivoli Storage Manager server can also provide a very cost- effective approach to maintaining archive copies of Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack server data. Tivoli Storage Manager can manage Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack data in a hierarchy of storage with intelligent data movement and storage that helps match the value of the data to the cost and performance characteristics of the storage media.

IBM Tivoli Enhanced Value-Based Pricing

IBM Tivoli software products are priced using IBM Tivoli's Enhanced Value-Based Pricing. The Enhanced Value-Based Pricing system is based upon the IBM Tivoli Environment-Managed Licensing Model, which uses a managed-environment approach -- whereby price is determined by what is managed rather than the number and type of product components installed. For example, all servers monitored with IBM Tivoli's monitoring product (IBM Tivoli Monitoring) require entitlements sufficient for those servers. Other IBM Tivoli products may manage clients, client devices, agents, network nodes, users, or other items, and are licensed and priced accordingly.

Unlike typical systems management licensing models that require entitlements of specific software components to specific systems, the IBM Tivoli Environment-Managed Licensing Model provides the customer flexibility to deploy its IBM Tivoli software products within its environment in a manner that can address and respond to the customer's evolving architecture. That is, as the architecture of a customer's environment changes, the customer's implementation of IBM Tivoli software can be altered as needed without affecting the customer's license requirements (as long as the customer does not exceed its entitlements to the software).

Under Enhanced Value-Based Pricing, licensing and pricing of server- oriented applications are determined based upon the server's use in the customer's environment. Typically, such applications are licensed and priced in a manner that corresponds to each installed and activated processor of the server managed by the IBM Tivoli application to help correlate price to value while offering a simple solution.

For servers with physical or logical partitions (sometimes called virtual), entitlements are required for all installed and activated processors on the server. For each IBM Tivoli application managing a clustered environment, licensing is based on the cumulative number of installed and activated processors on each server in the cluster.

Enhanced Value-Based Pricing recognizes the convergence of RISC/UNIX and Microsoft Windows/Intel technologies, in order to simplify the customers licensing requirements, and to provide a smoother, more scalable model. Pricing and licensing does not differentiate between non-System z server platforms or operating systems. For some products, this platform neutrality extends to System z® and other host servers as well.

IBM Tivoli enhanced value-based pricing terminology definitions

Manager processor (charging under full capacity in the managed environment)

Charges are based on the active processors on the machines in the computing environment affiliated with the program rather than on the server where the program is run. The managed processors which require Proofs of Entitlement (PoE) are defined in the Charges section of the announcement or in the License Information's program unique terms.

Notes:

  • IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  • Multicore technology allows two or more processors (commonly called cores) to be active on a single silicon chip. With multicore technology, IBM considers each core to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing siding on the single silicon chip.
  • The program may not run on some or all of the processors for which PoEs are required for the program's valuation method.
  • Threading, a technique that makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  • Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blades with which the program is affiliated.
  • Not all processors require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To determine the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the processor value unit conversion table on the Passport Advantage Web site
http://www.ibm.com/software/passportadvantage

Partitions

A server's resources (CPU, memory, I/O, interconnects and buses) may be divided according to the needs of the applications running on the server. This partitioning can be implemented with physical boundaries (Physical Partitions) or logical boundaries (Logical Partitions). Physical Partitions are defined by a collection of processors dedicated to a workload and can be used with systems that have either multiple cards or multiple frames, each of which can be configured independently. In this method, the partitions are divided along hardware boundaries and processors, and the I/O boards, memory, and interconnects are not shared. Logical Partitions are defined by software rather than hardware and allocate a pool of processing resources to a collection of workloads. These partitions, while separated by software boundaries, share hardware components and run in one or more physical partitions.

Server

A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user and/or client devices over a network. A PoE must be obtained for each server on which the program or a component of the program is run or for each server managed by the program. Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate Server.

Standby or backup systems

For programs running or resident on backup machines, IBM defines three types of situations: cold, warm, and hot. In the cold and warm situations, a separate entitlement for the copy on the backup machine is normally not required and typically no additional charge applies. In a hot backup situation, the customer needs to acquire another license or entitlements sufficient for that server. All programs running in backup mode must be solely under the customer's control, even if running at another enterprise's location. As a practice, the following are definitions and allowable actions concerning the copy of the program used for backup purposes.

Cold - A copy of the program may reside, for backup purposes, on a machine as long as the program is not started. There is no additional charge for this copy.

Warm - A copy of the program may reside for backup purposes on a machine and is started, but is "idling", and is not doing any work of any kind. There is no additional charge for this copy.

Hot - A copy of the program may reside for backup purposes on a machine, is started, and is doing work. The customer must acquire a license or entitlements for this copy and there will generally be an additional charge. Doing work includes, for example, production, development, program maintenance, and testing. It also could include other activities such as mirroring of transactions, updating of files, synchronization of programs, data or other resources (for example, active linking with another machine, program, database, or other resource, and so on), or any activity or configurations that would allow an active hot switch or other synchronized switch over between programs, databases, or other resources to occur. In the case of a program or system configuration that is designed to support a high availability environment by using various techniques (for example, duplexing, mirroring of files or transactions, maintaining a 'heartbeat', active linking with another machine, program, database, or other resource, and so on), the program is considered to be doing work in the hot situation and a license or entitlement must be purchased.

Value Units

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurements are processor cores and MSU's. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as Servers, users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for your specific implementation of the given program must be obtained from a conversion table associated with the program. You must obtain a PoE for the appropriate number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements of a given program cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program. Whenever the designated measurement is a processor core, not all processors require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To determine the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the processor value unit conversion table on the Passport Advantage Web site

http://www.ibm.com/software/passportadvantage

Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack pricing examples (Processor Value Unit and per server based)

The following examples are provided to illustrate the customer's licensing requirements.

References to processor-based licensing do not represent the actual number of entitlements required. Entitlement requirements are Value Unit-based. Processors reference in these examples represent the designated measurement on which the required number of Value Unit entitlements will be calculated. The number of Value Unites required per processor will depend on the processor type. For more information, refer to the Value Unit definition in the IBM Tivoli Enhanced Value-Based Pricing terminology definitions. Value Unit

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users or resources which may include servers, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a PoE for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. Not all processor cores require the same number of Processor Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Processor Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the Processor Value Unit Table on the following Web site

http://www.ibm.com/software/sw-lotus/services/cwepassport.nsf/wdocs/ pvu_table_for_customers

With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of Processor Value Units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.
