Description
Bottom rule

IBM Ported Tools for z/OS: IBM HTTP Server V7.0 provides an HTTP Server, or Web server (based on Apache Software Foundation's Apache HTTP Server (version 2.2.8)) for the z/OS UNIX System Services environment.

The IBM Ported Tools for z/OS: IBM HTTP Server V7.0 feature has the same functionality found in the WebSphere® Application Server for z/OS V7.0 product.

IBM HTTP Server V7.0 provides support for dynamic content via CGI/FastCGI, compression, caching, proxying, request rewriting, SSL, and LDAP Authentication. Because it uses the z/OS UNIX System Services environment, authentication and authorization can be based on SAF credentials and secure connections using z/OS System SSL (and ICSF).

IBM HTTP Server V7.0 is an unpriced feature of the IBM Ported Tools for z/OS unpriced licensed program.

Product positioning
Bottom rule

IBM Ported Tools for z/OS: IBM HTTP Server V7.0 feature is also shipped with the WebSphere Application Server (WAS) for z/OS (WAS) V7.0 product. Customers who have installed WAS for z/OS V7.0, do not need to order and subsequently install this feature.

With the advent of IBM Ported Tools for z/OS: IBM HTTP Server V7.0 feature, customers now have a choice of Web servers on the z/OS platform. Prior to this, customers could use the z/OS IBM HTTP Server shipped as an exclusive base element of z/OS to perform Web serving for use by e-business applications.

Customers should use the IBM Ported Tools for z/OS: IBM HTTP Server V7.0 feature Web server when looking for:

  • Currency with open standards established by the Apache Software Foundation
  • IPv6 support
  • Portability of skills across platforms given that it is a port of Apache HTTP Server
  • Use of plugin modules to perform specific functionality such as:
    • mod_ldap - allows HTTP authentication with an LDAP server
    • mod_deflate - supports standard http compression
    • mod_rewrite - supports rewriting a URL
    • mod_proxy - allows the IBM HTTP Server V7.0 to act as a forward and/or reverse proxy server
    • mod_authnz_saf - allows authentication to SAF (for example, RACF® and other security products)

The z/OS IBM HTTP Server continues to have unique functionality specific to the z/OS platform. Customers could choose this Web server when wanting to exploit functions such as:

  • Traditional z/OS-specific data set support
  • SMF accounting
  • Dynamic caching using FRCA (Fast Response Cache Accelerator) used for high-performance static content
  • Developing GWAPI-based plug-ins
