Product positioning
Bottom rule

Virtualization has transformed enterprise-class IT. Virtualized solutions unlock technological resources such as processing power and storage from specific hardware, and redelivers them so that you can allocate them in real time to achieve business goals.

New virtualized infrastructures, however, require new management tools. Older tools generally lack the modern feature set and focus required to achieve the highest performance and most flexible response from virtualized solutions. As a result, the overall business value these outdated tools generate is also suboptimal. Furthermore, when different tools are used to manage different virtual technologies, management complexity increases. A superior solution would empower administrators to manage both virtual servers and virtual storage from a single source.

With IBM Systems Director V6.1, the underlying technical differences across different hardware and software virtual solutions can be viewed, allowing administrators to manage the overall virtualized infrastructure as one. Furthermore, through its next-generation feature set, extensible via a plug-in architecture, Systems Director V6.1 can help you accomplish more than ever before.

IBM Systems Director V6.1 helps you achieve the full potential of virtualization: Simplified management; faster time-to-solution in the event of a problem; higher return on investment; a tailored fit between features, functions, and the specific needs of your organization; and an accelerated, more flexible response to changing business goals and strategies.

The cost of managing the IT infrastructure has become the largest and fastest-growing component of overall IT spending for many organizations. Virtualization helps address this cost through the consolidation of physical resources. However, it also adds complexity by creating a sharp increase in the number of managed virtual resources. IT professionals are seeking more advanced capabilities and tools for managing both their physical and virtual systems across multiple architectures and environments. IBM Systems Director V6.1 is a significant new release for platform management. It gives IT professionals the tools they need to better coordinate and manage all of their virtual and physical resources in the new enterprise data center.

Systems Director also complements and integrates with higher-level enterprise management software such as Tivoli. Systems Director, a hardware platform management solution, and Tivoli Software are complementary and can be used either individually or together to deliver superior end-to-end IT management.

Systems Director's focus is on hardware platform management, health, and configuration to help deliver maximum system availability. It consists of a set of tools that delivers granular hardware management information that can be passed up and integrated into Tivoli products, putting it into an enterprise and business services context. The IBM Tivoli portfolio of products enables a broader set of management capabilities than Systems Director and is more scalable for enterprise-wide operations. Tivoli products also go beyond hardware management and deliver advanced, automated tools for managing software applications, networks, and storage. It demonstrates how IT resources, performance, and usage fit and with overall business policies and goals as part of the IBM Service Management initiatives.

Terms and conditions
Bottom rule

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for subscription and support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

License Information form number

GC52-1314-00

The program's License Information will be available for review on the IBM Software License Agreement Web site

http://www.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf

IBM Systems Director contains management server and agent components, and you are authorized to use the components on IBM systems. You are not authorized to run IBM Systems Director Server on non-IBM systems.

You are authorized to manage non-IBM systems that run Platform Agent and non-IBM systems without an agent. See the hardware and software requirements for more information about supported systems.

You are authorized to use management server and agent components only on IBM systems. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the program includes a license for up to 20 installations of the Agent component on non-IBM x86 systems. These 20 licenses for non-IBM x86 systems are not transferable and cannot be combined or aggregated. For example, if you buy two IBM machines and install the program on only one of them, you are entitled to install the Agent component on only 20 non-IBM x86 systems. If you install the program on both IBM machines, your entitlement is limited to managing 20 non-IBM x86 systems. To install additional Agent components on non-IBM x86 systems, you must obtain additional Agent component licenses from IBM.

You can purchase licenses from the Ready to Buy Web Page at

http://www.ibm.com/systems/management/director/buy.html

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
