Originally named IBM WebSphere® Product Center, IBM InfoSphere Master Data Management Server for Product Information Management (InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM) V6.0 delivers:

  • Improved usability through new customizable screens
  • Easy integration with enterprise solutions based on service-oriented architecture (SOA) enablement
  • Standardization with Javatm APIs
  • Integration with IBM Information Server to improve load times for pre-cleansed data
  • Improved performance and scalability of certain use cases, demonstrated by benchmarking
  • Enhanced serviceability tools to facilitate responses from technical support

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM helps companies get control over their information by enabling them to manage and maintain a complete and accurate view of their master data.

Master data management is a top priority for many organizations as they try to gain control over their data -- their most valued and often overlooked asset. While master data -- the high-value information such as customer, supplier, partner, product, materials, and employee data -- is critical for running a business, it is typically scattered within heterogeneous application silos across the enterprise.

The InfoSphere family of products delivers a unified information platform to integrate, reconcile, manage, and analyze data and content from information silos, regardless of the type, volume, and complexity of the data. This data can be quickly delivered in context to users, applications, and to customers, and to support new cross-domain application functionality. InfoSphere products have the ability to manage the complete lifecycle for nearly all information types -- historical or transactional, including data, content, and Web-based -- and easily integrate new business entities, information sources, and definitions as they are added or changed.

Description
Bottom rule

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM delivers extensive function for managing all aspects of product information, including linking to information regarding products, locations, organizations, and terms of trade.

Rich data model for all aspects of product information

Companies must manage various dimensions of product information, including item, location, and organization data, and all the linkages among those, including prices and trade terms. With InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM, you can manage item and location information with numerous classification, merchandising, geographic, and operational hierarchies.

The rich data model allows you to:

  • Manage items and various relationships among items (packaging, substitution, cross-sell, up-sell, bundles, or prepacks)
  • Manage locations, location hierarchies, and various attributes related to locations
  • Deliver superior category hierarchy support
  • Support specific attributes and attribute values
    • Category
    • Location
    • Relationship

Organizational modeling with role- and attribute-level security administration

Product information is often owned and modified by users from multiple departments within a company. With InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM, companies can segment various attributes of product data per business responsibility (such as logistics, finance, pricing, marketing, and supplier) and control user actions (view only, edit, approve) based on their roles.

Pricing analysts can enter and update pricing while marketing users can work on product description, features, and benefits. Each user sees the relevant product information based on his or her role for the most secure and productive user interface. Organization modeling and security for InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM includes the following functions:

  • Access control groups and selections for segment data per business responsibility through access control groups and selections
  • Granular security for permitted user actions by user role
  • Attributes for groups (attribute collections) by functional area
  • Access for users to attribute groups based on functional ownership
  • Attribute views and tabs for the most intuitive and productive user interface by role

Extensive business process support

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM is designed to support and enhance business processes for product information management in an enterprise. Rather than enforcing hardened business models and processes, InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM allows an enterprise to define its existing or new business processes in InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM. Multiple hierarchies and taxonomies can be laid on top of the same collection of items. The hierarchy structures can be representatives of business units, industry standards, store locations, regions, and so on. Product information can be managed in multiple languages, with robust support for managing the translation process with third-party translation agencies.

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM powers business processes for an enterprise by:

  • Managing data in multiple languages with localized attribute names and values
  • Delivering superior attribute-level workflow
  • Enabling a collaboration area for internal and external collaboration

High performance, scalability, and reliability

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM is designed to manage millions of products with translated and localized product data across geographies. Companies can deploy InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM with hundreds of users, managing product data for hundreds of stores. It is designed to process high volumes of data synchronization messages and product information queries per day. Key features include:

  • Support for application server clustering
  • High user concurrency
  • Large data and batch processing capacity
  • User interface (GUI) optimized for the power user
  • Light weight interface options for casual users

Open and interoperable

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM operates in heterogeneous IT environments. It integrates with industry-leading message bus tools such as WebSphere MQ and supports multiple protocols such as HTTP, FTP, SMTP, JMS, and Web services for ease of integration. InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM delivers:

  • Support for various data formats and communication protocols
  • Data mapping console for mapping from and to any external data model
  • Easy integration with leading enterprise application integration tools, including WebSphere Business Integration, through messaging infrastructure

Flexible deployment and manageability

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM provides tools for system administrators for fast deployment and ease of management, including:

  • A Web-based user interface
  • A scheduler for time-based or event-driven scheduling
  • System administration tools for database administration and application server performance tuning
  • A complete audit trail

Improved usability

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM V6 introduces a Task Management Dashboard that can be set as the user's home screen. It lists alerts awaiting the user's attention, and includes shortcuts to the screens and tools that the user uses most frequently. Dashboard implementation is Java Server Page (JSP) based, uses the new Java API interface of InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM, and can be extended and customized to meet client requirements.

Another new screen is the Lightweight Item Single Edit screen that offers an alternative for casual users to the more powerful Item Single Edit Screen. This new screen offers basic functionality that is much lighter in client-side scripting. It uses new Web 2.0 technology and can be extended to meet client requirements.

Extended SOA enablement

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM provides an interface to Web services that allows for easy integration with existing and new enterprise applications. These Web services can be written in Java, allowing developers to leverage third-party Web services development, testing, and deployment tools.

Prebuilt integration templates

IBM InfoSphere Information Server (IIS) offers data cleansing and data movement capabilities via IBM InfoSphere DataStagetm and IBM InfoSphere QualityStage. Typical PIM implementations require cleansing of data during imports. While InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM provides very good data cleansing capabilities, it is not a data movement and data cleansing tool. However, with the pre-built templates for IIS integration, large volumes of data can be cleansed within IIS and prepared in a format that loads faster in InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM. This accelerator can help reduce the time and complexity to implement a PIM solution.

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM is typically the master PIM repository for an enterprise, with business users interacting with this repository every day. Prebuilt jobs are provided for exporting data to IBM InfoSphere Business Glossary, where business users can have easy access to the PIM data dictionary.

Many implementations have systems downstream from InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM. Since it is usually a time-consuming effort to communicate metadata from InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM systems, prebuilt jobs are provided that export metadata in a format that can be loaded into IBM MetaData Server. This can help customers reduce maintenance costs. Any changes to the metadata for InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM are sent to the IBM MetaData Server, which can communicate the changes to all of the downstream systems.

Serviceability tools

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM provides serviceability tools that can help reduce the time to collect pertinent logs and send them to IBM Tech Support. This can help IBM Tech Support respond with potentially quicker turnaround.

Java API

Prior to Version 5.3.0, all of the customization logic was written in the scripting language of InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM -- a proprietary language very similar to Java Script. In Version 5.3.0, a subset of the Script API functionality was exposed via Java API. In Version 6.0, complete Script API functionality is also exposed via Java API. Java API is included to accelerate integration with other applications in the enterprise. This standard Java API exposes commonly used business objects and supports query functions, thus allowing external systems to search for products or entities maintained within InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM. Some of the benefits include:

  • Developers can use their favorite Java IDE, thus reducing ramp up time for developers who are new to InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM.
  • Ability to write JSP interfaces to InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM to extend the out-of-the-box user interface.
  • An option to implement business logic in Script API, Java API, or a hybrid model with both Script and Java code coexisting.
  • Ability of Java to offer standard mechanisms to share reusable code via JAR libraries. With the new Java API, it is easy to build reusable components and use existing third-party JAR libraries. This can significantly reduce development and testing time.

LDAP compliance

InfoSphere MDM Server for PIM V6.0 has been tested against five directory servers: IBM Tivoli®, IBM Domino®, Sun One, Novell eDirectory, and Microsoft® Active Directory.

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Resource Value Unit

Resource Value Unit (RVU) is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. RVU entitlements are based on the quantity of a specific designated measurement for the given program. A Proof of Entitlement must be obtained for the appropriate number of RVUs required for your environment as determined in accordance with the program terms. The RVU entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with RVU entitlements of another program. To determine how many RVUs to obtain for the program, contact your IBM Representative or consult the IBM License Information document for IBM InfoSphere Master Data Management Server for Product Information Management V6.0 by typing in "Master Data Management Server for Product Information Management" in the "Search Criteria" box at

http://www-03.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf/search

The RVU entitlements for this program are based on the number of products managed in the program.

A product is defined as each product, item, good, or service, whether active or inactive, that is represented in or tracked, maintained, or managed using the program. The product includes each individual variation, configuration, and component of the product as well as each bundle of more than one of the same or different products.

For example, a product includes (without limiting the above): Physical goods such as an item of apparel, or can of soup; products delivered digitally such as a movie, or song; services-based offerings such as a bank account or service agreement; product groupings, bundles, and configurations such as shampoo and conditioner combined into a single salable item, or a cell phone and internet connection service made available as a single offering. As further examples (without limitation), the following are treated as individual products: each product that has its own characteristics (for example, a shirt sold in blue, green, and yellow in sizes small, medium, and large for each color would count as nine products); different logistical configurations of a product (for example, a pallet, a case, and a pack would count as three products); and the same product that is sold in different locations with location-specific attributes (for example, a cell phone sold in the United States with packaging in English is a separate product from the same cell phone sold in Spain with packaging in Spanish).

For the purpose of licensing and pricing, IBM does not charge additional fees for non-production environments.

Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agenttm is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
