Description

Lotus Sametime Advanced 8.0 software has four new capabilities centered around real-time community collaboration, in addition to including all of the capabilities provided by the Lotus Sametime Standard offering.

Persistent group chat allows users to keep a continuous chat discussion running on a specific topic. As new people join the always running discussion, they see the entire history of the conversation. People can monitor the chat rooms to which they have subscribed, see how many people and unread messages are in each, and set up alerts based on certain words, the number of unread messages, or the number of active participants.

  • Broadcast tools
    • Skill tap: Allows users to broadcast questions to a community of colleagues, and lets experts volunteer to help within a specific community. Responses can be archived for future reuse (for example, searches, FAQs), and expertise rankings can be established based on the quality of responses.
    • Instant poll: Allows users to gather answers and opinions to polling questions in real time.
    • Broadcast chat: Allows users to invite members of a community to a group conversation.
    • Announcements: Keeps everyone in the loop and informed of upcoming events.
    • Instant share: Allows users to instantaneously start sharing their screen with one or more contacts.
    • Location server: Creates a central store for geographic location.

In addition to these new capabilities, Lotus Sametime Advanced users will have access to all of the features available in the Lotus Sametime Standard offering, including:

  • Presence
  • Encrypted and authenticated instant messaging
  • Web conferencing
  • Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) voice chat within the enterprise
  • Point-to-point video
  • Integration with leading telephony, audio, and video providers
  • Mobile clients
  • Federation with supported public IM networks
  • Toolkits for embedding presence in applications and Web sites
  • An extensible client built on the open Eclipse framework
  • A robust IBM Business Partner network of third-party solutions

The new capabilities provide many benefits.

  • Persistent chat
    • Streamline group discussion and decision making by making sure that all members of a team or group can see the whole conversation, preventing the disconnects that can happen with one-off, hallway, and "side" conversations.
    • Promote information sharing within the organization, breaking down silos of information.
    • Reduce the time lag and needed e-mail and IM communication when conversations take place on a one-on-one basis versus in a group and team setting.
  • Broadcast tools
    • Reach out to a community of experts to find immediate answers, eliminating the "how do I find the answers I need in real time when I don't know whom to ask?" problem.
    • Automate the capture of knowledge shared on an ad-hoc basis for future searching and reference; organically capture the knowledge of an organization, allowing you to retain the information easily and effortlessly.
    • Move help and support into the organization and out of centralized roles.
  • Instant share
    • Removes the barriers and potential delays of scheduling a Web conference and distributing conference information and Web sites to participants; can be instantly started without any distraction or delay on the part of the initiator or the other participants.
    • Share an application, a portion of your screen, or your entire desktop; allow other participants to "drive" and make changes to documents on your PC, using a company's encrypted, behind-the-firewall Lotus Sametime deployment.
    • Help desk support so you can instantly start up a remote desktop session to see the user's PC and take control and troubleshoot and fix it.
  • Location services
    • Build customized aggregation with other location services, such as GPS and cell tower.
    • Be able to see not only where people are presently, but the last known location of offline contacts.
    • Connect with coworkers by being able to see who else from your contact list is in the same location as you are.

For organizations already using Lotus Sametime Standard, a tradeup is available that allows organizations with a qualifying license of Lotus Sametime Standard to take advantage of the full capabilities of IBM Lotus Sametime Advanced at a discounted price. By trading up to IBM Lotus Sametime Advanced, organizations will be able to take advantage of additional capabilities, such as persistent group chat, real-time broadcast tools, instant screen sharing, and advanced geographic location services.

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

IBM Lotus Sametime Advanced is capable as of May 19, 2008, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT), containing details on the products accessibility compliance, can be requested on the following Web site

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
