Overview

OmniFind™ Text Search Server for DB2® for i5/OS™ enables full-text document searching in DB2. Text search allows you to select a DB2 record based on the text of one or more documents stored in the record itself. Documents stored in DB2 are indexed by a search server and the resulting index stored in the server's file system. When a full-text search is performed against the DB2 stored documents, the search expression is compared with the index. Any records that match the search criteria are returned in the result rows.

Description

OmniFind Text Search Server for DB2 for i5/OS (5733-OMF)

OmniFind Text Search Server for DB2 for i5/OS enables full-text document searching in DB2. Text search allows you to find a DB2 record based on the text contained in the document itself. Documents are processed by a search server and stored in a file system and DB2. When a full-text search is performed, the search expression is compared with the index, and any records that contain your search text are returned in the search results.

The following document types are supported:

  • XML
  • HTML
  • Rich Text Format (RTF)
  • JustSystems Ichitaro
  • Lotus® 123
  • Lotus Freelance®
  • Lotus WordPro
  • Microsoft® Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Word
  • PDF

A text index can be created over any character or binary data column:

  • BINARY
  • VARBINARY
  • BLOB
  • CHAR (FOR bit data, for mixed data, for sbcs data)
  • VARCHAR (FOR bit data, for mixed data, for sbcs data)
  • CLOB
  • DBCLOB
  • GRAPHIC
  • VARGRAPHIC

Text search support offers a set of stored procedures and two built-in functions, CONTAINS and SCORES, that can be used to search documents stored in the DB2 table. The administrative procedures enable and disable text searching and create, update, and drop text indexes. Following is an example of searching using a text index:

  • Given a table, BOOKS, with a text index created over the STORY column
  • SELECT AUTHOR, STORY FROM BOOKS
  • WHERE CONTAINS(STORY, 'mice chasing cats') = 1 AND YEAR > = 2000

This would return AUTHOR and STORY for all of the rows where the STORY column matched on the string 'mice chasing cats' and YEAR is greater than or equal to 2000.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

You can request a U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance at

IBM Electronic Services

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
