Description
Bottom rule

IBM Communications Server for Windows provides all-in-one communications services between workstations and a host system, as well as other workstations. Capabilities include:

  • Full-function SNA gateway
  • TN3270E and TN5250 servers
  • Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking® (APPN) including end node, branch extender node, and network node features
  • Connectivity support for LANs and WANs, including moving to IP networks
  • Rich set of SNA APIs
  • SNA application support in Windows Terminal Server environment

Support of SNA is based on the long experience of IBM as the architect and developer of this important protocol. In addition, Communications Server opens the door to protocol-independent networking, with seamless support for workstations communicating across SNA and IP networks. You can gain the freedom to be responsive to the changing demands of business applications, while minimizing network impact.

What's new in Communications Server for Windows, V6.1.3

  • Platform support for 32-bit Windows Vista operating systems.
  • Multilingual support: Multiple language installation from a single media. Language and locale options are provided at installation time to provide ease of installation.
  • Windows Installer support: Installation of Communications Server for Windows is simplified with use of the Windows Installer function. This provides versioning of files and less system restarts during maintenance upgrades.
  • SNA enhancements: The SNA stack improves Enterprise Extender functionality and compatibility with applications migrated from other platforms. Enhancements include:
    • Connection Network Reachability Awareness (CNRA) provides:
      • VTAM® APPN network node information on outages in the network from an end node
      • Faster dynamic routing around network outages
    • CPI-C interface compatibility provides API compatibility with other CPI-C implementations.
    • Synchronous SLI Close verb allows LUA API compatibility with other implementations. The application gets control after SLI Close verb processing completes.
    • Suppress LUWID Option allows the Logical Unit of Work Identifier to be generated on the partner host system for central work tracking.
    • Mode Receive Pacing Window limit simulates fixed pacing to avoid network congestion for legacy systems by controlling the amount of data sent to the session partner and improves response time for all sessions.
    • Enterprise Extender is enhanced by fine tuning parameters to improve performance.
    • IPv6 support for Enterprise Extender allows Enterprise Extender flows over IPv6 networks.

The following function has been removed in Version 6.1.3:

  • AS/400® Folder support
  • Web Admin Console
  • AnyNet® Sockets over SNA
  • Twinax and COM port adapter support
  • Obsolete adapter drivers
  • Entry-level emulators
