Overview

IBM Classification Module automates the categorization of content documents and e-mails by analyzing the full text of documents and e-mails. Integrated with the IBM FileNet P8 platform, and as a freestanding product, it empowers you to accelerate your time-to-value from your Enterprise Content Management (ECM) investments and, through automation, saves your employees valuable time.

Assigning categories, like folders or document classes, in an automated manner helps ECM system-based applications bring more content and categorized more accurately. The system provides easy-to-use GUI tools to invoke automated classification as well as review and audit the automatic actions of the system. The act of reviewing in turn provides feedback to the system, facilitating real-time improvement of the classifications.

The IBM Classification Module is a part of the IBM ECM portfolio and primarily targeted for use by IBM ECM customers. The previous version of the product (V8.3) was named IBM Classification Module for OmniFind™ Discovery Edition.

Description

Accelerating time to value of your Enterprise Content Management (ECM) investment with IBM Classification Module

IBM Classification Module automates the process of categorizing your content by reading and understanding the full text of your content. As part of the IBM ECM architecture, the classification module saves time, gets more content under management faster, and accelerates the return on your investment in ECM.

Value of classification

Analysts estimate that the volume of "unstructured" content — e-mail, presentations, contracts, forms, for example — will virtually double annually. Faced with this explosion of content, a reliable method for organizing it becomes critical. By investing in an enterprise content management platform, you are committing to cataloguing and classifying your organization's content, whether you are encouraging content reuse, establishing records management practices, or improving a business process.

Managing these documents means making many decisions about the content every day. IBM Classification Module can accurately and automatically organize information so that it is not only more accessible and you can better leverage it, but also helps reduce your risk and costs. Automating the classification of your content means you can get more out of your ECM system, with less time invested. By correctly classifying information in your ECM system, documents have a higher probability of being found quickly. That means busy professionals can be more effective.

Classification can be used to make a more basic decision — whether to manage an item or not. By filtering out e-mails about non-business activities or documents that don't meet your records management criteria, for example, you can keep your ECM infrastructure focused on the right content and eliminate costs for storing non-essential information.

Learning by understanding

While it can organize information by policies or key words, the unique aspect of IBM Classification Module's approach is its ability to assign metadata based on the full context of the document. It isn't just searching for a single word or phrase, but analyzing the entire document, discerning the topics in the text, then assigning it to a category. And it won't be fooled by misspellings, abbreviations, shorthand, or technical terms.

The IBM Classification Module adapts to the unique nature of your business because it "learns" to identify different categories from examples you provide to it. And as you provide feedback on its performance, it adjusts in real time, immediately taking into account corrections you have made. In this way, its accuracy keeps pace with your business, rapidly adjusting to changes in your business as they occur.

IBM Classification Module is available in twelve languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese (Simple and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, and Hebrew. IBM Classification Module provides basic support for other languages.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be requested via the IBM Web site

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product positioning

The IBM Classification Module is a part of the IBM ECM portfolio and primarily targeted for use by IBM ECM customers. The previous version of the product (V8.3) was named IBM Classification Module for OmniFind Discovery Edition. With this release, IBM has dropped the OmniFind in order to target it more directly towards IBM Enterprise Content Management customers, and reduce the association of the technology as being exclusively search related.

The product is stand-alone and can be used in tandem with any ECM system. The core classification capabilities are not reliant on any particular ECM system.

Note that previous use cases of the software centered on the automated routing and response of customer e-mails still applies. This use case is supported through the Case Resolution Module for OmniFind Discovery Edition.

Charge metrics definitions

Value Unit

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements, which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a PoE for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

Processor (Value Unit)

A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the value unit table on the following Web site

With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.

Sub-capacity processor (Value Unit)

For programs eligible for sub-capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of Value Units based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition (utilizing eligible partitioning technologies) where the program runs. Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for sub-capacity terms or the program's license information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms.

Sub-capacity for selected middleware products

Sub-capacity licensing on a per processor or per Value Unit basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer sub-capacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli® License Compliance Manager within their offerings so that you can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on the use of the programs on a continuous basis.

More information can be found on the Passport Advantage Web site

Eligibility requirements for sub-capacity licensing

To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub-capacity terms.

For those machines running programs with sub-capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub-capacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub-capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub-capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a primary business contact is established for their contracts.

For more information on required and entitled license capacity, license requirements, and reporting, refer to Software Announcement 205-093 , dated April 19, 2005.

If you order (this product) under sub-capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub-capacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process.) You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.

IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software is documented in the following customer publications, which are available from IBM Publications Center at
