Hardware requirements
31-bit SDK for z/OS, Java Technology Edition, V6 runs on the following IBM System z servers:
-
z9 BC
-
z9 EC
-
z990
-
z890
-
z900
-
z800
Software requirements
z/OS V1.7 (5694-A01) or z/OS.e V1.7 (5655-G52), or later is required.
Compatibility
IBM 31-bit SDK for z/OS, Java Technology Edition, V6 (5655-R31) has the same functions as SDK for
z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V5 (5655-N98).
The following are independent products and can coexist on the same z/OS system:
-
31-bit SDK for z/OS, Java Technology Edition, V6 (5655-R31)
-
31-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V5 (5655-N98)
-
31-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 (5655-I56)
-
64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java Technology Edition, V6 (5655-R32)
-
64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V5 (5655-N99)
-
64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 (5655-M30)
Most Java applications executed on SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 (5655-I56) are
expected to run unchanged on 31-bit SDK for z/OS, Java Technology Edition, V6, provided that they do
not use deprecated Java 2 SDK 1.4 APIs. Additionally, in some cases, because of a small number of
incompatibilities introduced industry wide between Java 2 SDK 1.4 and SDK 5 APIs, some applications
may have to change.
31-bit SDK for z/OS, Java Technology Edition, V6 can take advantage of enhanced z/OS linkage
capabilities (XPLINK). The z/OS operating system provides an XPLINK runtime environment for
programs, including the Java virtual machine (JVM). This contrasts with the Java product, SDK for
z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 (5655-I56), where it is necessary to ensure that an XPLINK
environment is in place when the JVM is launched.
IBMJSSE2 is the sole JSSE security provider. If the provider list includes references to the older
IBMJSSE, the IBMJSSE2 introduced in the SDK1.4.2 products will be invoked. Note that the deprecated
com.ibm.net.ssl.* APIs will NOT be supported. Use of the deprecated APIs will require code
modifications to use APIs supported by the IBMJSSE2 provider.
For details on incompatibilities, visit
Limitations
Input Method Framework (IMF) is not supported.
Performance considerations
Optimal performance is expected to be obtained with the most recent levels of the hardware and
operating system.

Processor
A processor (commonly called a CPU or core) is a functional unit within a computing device that
interprets and executes instructions. A processor consists of at least an instruction control unit
and one or more arithmetic or logic units. With multicore technology, each core is considered a
processor. With full capacity licensing, a Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be acquired for all
activated processors available for use on the server.

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve
higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive,
no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These
services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem
resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but
complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry
points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to
gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It
monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined
timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early
knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in
higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service
Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions
or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting
enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
