Overview

IBM Entity Analytic Solutions (EAS) is the market-leading entity resolution and analysis platform designed specifically for fighting threat and fraud. Its unique identity and relationship disambiguation technology make it possible for public sector organizations and commercial enterprises to recognize and mitigate the incidence of fraud, threat, and risk. EAS provides insight on demand and in the context of "who is who" and "who knows who." It can do so anonymously where data privacy is of primary concern.

By accumulating identity context over time, EAS uses all sources of information to determine whether persons really are who they say they are. Unlike traditional approaches that merely look at the most recent phone number or address, EAS looks at these attributes across time to ensure the most accurate identity. With new information, EAS determines whether a person has been identified before, whether the person is new to your organization, or whether there is some previous assumption that should be corrected based on new facts. This self-correcting behavior all but eliminates data drift and builds an increasingly accurate picture of identity as information volumes increase.

Once accurate identity is established, complex relationships can be uncovered. EAS processes resolve identity data to determine whether people are, or ever have been, related in any way. While this is particularly useful for organizations that track terrorists, it can also help businesses such as banks determine whether the Hope Smith who just applied for a loan is related to Rock Smith, the account holder who recently defrauded the bank.

In many instances, sharing information is not simple due to concerns over data ownership and privacy. Through unique anonymization technology, EAS is able to process identity and relationship information without the need to expose the personal information of those involved. This approach ensures compliance with business regulations while still enabling an enterprise to adequately combat threats against its business.

Sometimes organizations may want to share information across nontraditional boundaries, such as between a business and government agency, that could pose serious privacy challenges. EAS allows you to "disguise" sensitive data before you share it with others for purposes of identity resolution and relationship detection.

EAS technology makes it easy for businesses and governments to gain insight from their records while reducing the risk that criminals will steal and misuse information about innocent people. Resolving identities and their relationships is serious business. It can help reduce fraud or prevent crimes ranging from unwarranted insurance claims, credit card fraud and identity theft, to terrorist activity.

Description

Entity resolution and analysis is a critical component in any threat and fraud intelligence environment. Entity Analytic Solutions (EAS) offers industry-leading capability by delivering real-time insight into the identities and relationships of involved customers, citizens, residents, and employees who are an integral part of your critical business processes and operating environment. EAS speeds and improves the accuracy of business decisions by delivering resolved identity and relationship information when and where it is needed, regardless of from where the data was extracted or where it originated. EAS supports open industry standards such as XML, allowing for easy integration into a vast array of enterprise-wide infrastructure.

EAS has the following unique, market-leading capabilities:

  • Full attribution: Identity Resolution accumulates a history as opposed to a snapshot of each individual or company in this database over time. By retaining all relevant record information, the resolution process becomes more accurate because there is more data with which to make comparisons.
  • Multiple views: All records are retained separately in Identity Resolution, thereby supporting multiple views of an individual rather than the conventional single view. Consequently, EAS enables every version of truth about individual identities.
  • Real-time changes: When a record is received, Identity Resolution immediately compares it with its database to see if it resolves an existing record, is new and requires the creation of a new record, or requires an unresolve of an existing record, in which case two new virtual consolidations are created automatically.
  • Sequence neutral: It doesn't matter in what order records are presented to Identity Resolution, you always obtain the same results. This is not guaranteed when you use traditional methods where you match against a consolidated record rather than its originating elements, which can result in a different resolution.
  • Analysis of any attribute: In Identity Resolution every attribute of an entity is indexed, which is not normally the case when using traditional methods. This means that you can search the database by phone number, for example, or by address, or by anything else that distinguishes the records under examination.
  • Self healing and self correcting: With EAS, data never has to be reloaded or refreshed. EAS works in real time, not in batch mode where identity information can go stale. Identity information is perpetually updated, with each transaction and update made instantaneously.
  • Relationship resolution: Relationship Resolution compares addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and any other characteristics it can discover across multiple individuals. Since it leverages every identity attribute, it resolves relationships with multiple linkage points from which it can make connections or discover linkages between unique identities.
  • Degrees of separation: This optional feature allows you to extend the recognition of undeclared affinity groups and networks of identities across customers, employees, suppliers, other involved people, and so on, by evaluating relationships. The sensitivity is defined by the user, well beyond a single degree and up to 30 degrees of separation.
  • Information sharing: The secure sharing of personal data is of particular use when the data being shared is highly sensitive. With Anonymous Resolution, information can be shared without providing access to information that is not intended to be shared.
  • Enterprise discovery: EAS provides insight at the ingestion of datastreams for real-time discovery. New observations are reconciled and related to historical data. Context and discovery accumulate incrementally in real time. Insight is pushed to users. Users do not have to pose smart questions to obtain valuable insight into identities and relationships.

V4.2 enhancements

EAS V4.2 delivers new features that enable it to be deployed across more diverse geographies with improved performance, improved ease of use to speed deployment, and simplified integration with existing applications.

Globalization

Latin1 character set handling: New support is added for the ingestion and display of the Latin1 character set directly into and out of the EAS pipeline and Visualizer. This removes the requirement for Latin1 countries to convert data to ASCII and causes Latin1 ingested data to display as Latin1 in the EAS Visualizer. In addition, entity resolution is now performed on Latin1 data without converting it first to ASCII equivalent form.

Performance

Parallel processing pipeline: Added capability for processing multiple records in parallel while leveraging multiple processors simplifies deployment and maintenance, and reduces some system requirements for multipipeline deployments. End users benefit by being able to launch one pipeline per machine and specify the number of parallel processes to run. Generics are shared within each parallel pipeline, allowing for less memory consumption and faster generic detection.

Ease of use

  • Improved EAS Visualizer navigation: Multiple improvements to the Visualizer enhance overall ease of use. These improvements more accurately reflect the relationships between entities within Visualizer and provide more insightful entity resumes.
  • Enhanced query support in EAS Visualizer: New queries on the database can now be created that do not require entity resolution to find the related entities. A list of entities is subsequently returned that has some or all of the elements entered by the user. This is a one-time search only and does not exist as a persistent entity. The existing Entity Search remains unchanged.
  • Improved error handling capabilities: Through improved error handling capabilities introduced in the EAS Console, Visualizer, and pipeline, product problem determination is dramatically improved. Each product component has been made more robust to provide end users with useful, understandable error messages and log messages when errors occur. Users should see more sensible handling of exceptional conditions and should have the information needed to help resolve a problem when the application is unable to handle things on its own.

Functional enhancements

  • Disclosed relationships: Allows a user to enter and remove disclosed relationships through XML (and define simple disclosed relationships through the EAS Visualizer). These disclosed relationships can then be used for alert generation and by the Visualizer to show them in the graph and entity resume.
  • Improved alerting: Allows enhanced alerting and filtering. An option to not alert again a duplicate alert is enabled by default. If you wish to leverage the previous default configuration, you can easily do so by modifying configuration settings.
  • Externalization of EAS schema: For complex configurations, the EAS schema is now externally viewable for customization.

Improved documentation

EAS product documentation is now readily available in a standardized format through the IBM Eclipse Help System (IEHS), which is part of the IBM Information Center. The documentation is easy to navigate and is readily available for download, as needed. EAS documentation is updated regularly, allowing up-to-date changes to be made available quickly.

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product positioning

IBM Entity Analytic Solutions, the world's leading solution for Entity Resolution and Analysis, delivers the following capabilities:

  • Identity Resolution answers the question "Who is who," allowing you to identify people, organizations, or things.
  • Relationship Resolution answers the question "Who knows who," allowing you to determine what relationships exist between people, organizations, or things.
  • Anonymous Resolution allows you to share this information with third parties without disclosing the identity of the person or organization to whom the information relates, thereby avoiding contravention of data protection and similar laws.

Identity Resolution helps any organization recognize true individual identity, despite deliberate attempts to confuse or misrepresent identity.

Relationship Resolution extends the value of your existing information assets by linking unique resolved identities to outside non-obvious entities. It establishes relationships to individuals or organizations and uncovers social, professional, value, and criminal networks.

Anonymous Resolution enables multiple organizations to compare and correlate their proprietary data in a manner that never exposes sensitive data values, while still making it possible to detect fuzzy matches and non-obvious relationships.

Entity Analytic Solutions is complementary to other key IBM software:

  • WebSphere® Customer Center for making operational the identity and relationship information resolved by EAS
  • WebSphere Information Integration Solutions for enhanced extract, transform, load (ETL) support that allows quality data input into EAS
  • DB2® Data Warehouse Edition that provides the repository for identity and relationship data resolved by EAS

Charge metrics definitions

Value Unit

For EAS programs licensed under Value Unit entitlement, the number of Value Units is calculated based on the number of data source records and applications required.

A Data Source Record (commonly called a DSR) is a single entity record that will be entered into the Entity Analytic Solutions Program. A DSR is a discrete association with the specific identity of a person, place, or thing that has a set of data elements (relative information) entered into the program from a Data Source. The relative information of a DSR can be modified as long as it is modified from the original Data Source that created it.

EAS programs define an application (also called an end-user program) as any functional software program that will accept direct output from the EAS program. Examples include case management applications, investigative dashboards, and customer relationship management (CRM) programs.

To calculate the number of Value Unit entitlements required, contact your IBM representative.

Processor

A processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic units. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. With full capacity licensing, a Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be acquired for all activated processors available for use on the server. Contact your IBM representative for the number of processor licenses required.
