Description

Application development enhanced for federation

The application development enhancements available in WebSphere Federation Server V9.5 include support for the XML data type and for application savepoints.

XML data type support

XML type support allows federation users to exploit the pureXML feature in DB2 that enables XML documents to be stored in hierarchical format within columns of a table. XML columns are defined with the new XML data type. Because the pureXML feature is fully integrated into the federation server, the stored XML data can be accessed and managed by leveraging DB2 functionality. XML support includes the following key features:

  • New ability to access and manipulate XML data in XML files and in DB2 databases on Linux™, UNIX®, and Windows®
  • Use of the SQL/XML and XQuery languages to provide flexible XML data manipulation

Working with remote XML data

Information required for today's business systems is increasingly in XML format. WebSphere Federation Server V9.5 supports the remote XML data type that gives you the ability to access and manipulate XML data in a DB2 database on Linux, UNIX, and Windows systems and in flat files stored on file systems.

The federated system adheres to the same XML semantics as the DB2 database system. The native XML data store provides the ability to store and access XML documents stored in hierarchical form as a column of a relational table. You define the XML column with the XML data type. You can create a relational nickname over a remote DB2 table or a view that contains the XML data type. You can also use the XML wrapper to create a nonrelational nickname over an XML document.

This enables users to use either the XQuery or SQL languages to access and integrate data. The XQuery language is the primary mechanism for querying XML documents. You can use SQL to perform basic operations such as selecting XML columns and inserting, updating, or deleting XML data. You can also integrate SQL and XQuery to create queries for both existing relational data and XML data by using SQL/XML functions and predicates and XQuery functions.

Other development and configuration enhancements

  • Application savepoints: WebSphere Federation Server now supports application savepoints for insert, update, and delete operations against DB2 databases on Linux, UNIX, and Windows systems. This provides developers with more control over transactions, less locking contention, and improved integration with application logic.
  • SOAP header support: The Web services wrapper can be used to access Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) header values that are embedded in a SOAP message.
  • Automatic refresh of nickname statistics: Statistics collection is enhanced to keep nickname statistics current by running the nickname statistics update facility to refresh the statistics automatically. Current statistics enable the optimizer on the federation server to make informed choices that improve the performance of query plans.
  • Improved nickname column and index name generation: The method used for generating nickname column and index names for relational nicknames is enhanced so that the generated names more closely match the original names.

Security enhanced for federation

New security enhancements for federation include federated trusted contexts, federated database roles, and a new C-based interface to external user mapping repositories.

  • Federated trusted contexts: A trusted context is a database security object that defines a trusted relationship between the federation server and an external entity such as an application server or data source server. There are two major features:
    • End-to-end Federated Trusted Connections leverage data-source support for trusted connections to provide end-to-end identity assertion in multi-tier systems involving WebSphere Federation Server.
    • Outbound Federated Trusted Connections can eliminate most user-mappings by exploiting the ability of trusted connections.

Federated trusted contexts are supported for use with federated access to DB2 databases for Linux, UNIX, and Windows; DB2 for z/OS®; and Oracle.

  • Federated database roles: A database role simplifies the process of assigning and revoking privileges. As a member of a role, a user automatically obtains all of the privileges that are assigned to the role. The use of database roles in GRANT and REVOKE statements is supported for privileges involving federation. Through compensation, these roles are applied to remote data sources to provide a common mechanism for control to the whole federated system.
  • Label-based access control: In LBAC, a security label is a database object that describes a certain set of security criteria. Security labels are applied to data to protect the data. They are granted to users to allow them to access protected data.
  • C-based plug-in architecture to user mappings in external repositories: This new C-based plug-in architecture allows C programmers to create a plug-in that enables user mappings to be stored in an external repository that many federation servers share, and reduce the administrative maintenance that is required when user IDs and passwords are stored on each federation server. Previously, this capability was only available for the Java™ programming language.

Additional support for remote stored procedures

Remote stored procedures allow the federated system to access stored procedures at remote data sources. In addition to previous support for stored procedures from Oracle and Sybase, stored procedures on remote DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server databases are now also supported.

Hardware requirements

The exact configuration needed to support your environment with satisfactory performance will vary depending on multiple factors. Processing times will vary depending on server speed, memory, and network and server workload.

Minimum recommended configurations in this section need to be evaluated and adjusted according to your unique requirements. Disk space recommendations in this section are for the product installation and working space only. The actual hard disk space required will vary, depending upon your installation.

The minimum hardware requirement for WebSphere Federation Server is defined by the supported operating systems. In addition, minimum hardware requirements are:

  • 32-bit and 64-bit Windows and Linux: All systems based on Intel® or AMD processors that are capable of running the supported Windows or Linux operating systems (x86 and x64 systems).
  • AIX® and Linux for IBM System p™ systems: Systems with POWER4™, or later, processors are required.
  • Linux for IBM System z™ systems: An System z server or System z9™ server is required.
  • Solaris: Systems with UltraSPARC processors are required.
  • HP-UX: Itanium-based HP Integrity Series systems are required.

Memory requirements

The minimum required memory for WebSphere Federation Server is 256 MB. To determine the memory requirements for your installation, consider:

  • Other software running on the same server
  • Memory requirements of database clients
  • Performance requirements
  • Size and complexity of your configuration
  • Extent of database activity and the number of clients that access your system
  • Memory required to process the temporary tables and sorts performed by the federation server to avoid using disk input and output

DB2® V9.5 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows is required. (A restricted use license of DB2 Enterprise Server Edition V9.5 is included with WebSphere Federation Server V9.5.) For current DB2 memory requirements, visit

Disk space requirements

The disk space required is the sum of the following applicable components:

Operating Relational Nonrelational
system wrappers wrappers Installer

IBM AIX 5L(TM) 5 to 20 MB 5 to 20 MB 50 to 80 MB
Linux 5 to 20 MB 5 to 20 MB 50 to 80 MB
Sun Solaris 5 to 20 MB 5 to 20 MB 50 to 80 MB
Windows 5 to 20 MB 5 to 20 MB 50 to 80 MB

Additional disk space considerations:

  • Consider the amount of necessary disk space on the federation server to manage any temporary tables and sorts that exceed the available memory.
  • Disk space requirements vary depending on your configuration and the type of disk drive that you have. Significantly more disk space may be required on FAT-formatted drives with large cluster sizes than on NTFS-formatted drives.
  • Include the required client software and communication products when calculating the amount of disk space that is needed for your installation.

The hardware requirements of WebSphere Federation Server may be occasionally updated. To obtain the most current information for supported hardware, visit

Charge metrics definitions

Value Unit

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements, which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a PoE for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

Processor value unit

A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the value unit table at

With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.

Subcapacity processor (Value Unit)

For programs eligible for subcapacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition (utilizing eligible partitioning technologies) where the program runs. Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for subcapacity terms or the program's license information to determine applicable subcapacity terms.

Authorized user

An authorized user is one and only one individual with a specific identity within or outside your enterprise who has purchased a license entitlement to access the program. A PoE must be obtained for each authorized user accessing the program or any program component either directly or indirectly through any means. An example of indirect access is through a multiplexing program, device, or application server.

The program can be accessed by multiple authorized users provided that an authorized user license entitlement has been obtained for each individual. An authorized user's ID is unique to the uniquely identified individual and cannot be shared with others, used by others, or transferred. However, a single authorized user ID is entitled to establish one or more connections to the program, each for use solely by the identified authorized user, and only the single authorized user entitlement is required.

Access to this program via an intranet (connection within your enterprise) or via the Internet (connections from outside your enterprise) may only be made by authorized users.

Subcapacity for selected middleware products

Subcapacity licensing on a per processor or per Value Unit basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer subcapacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli® License Compliance Manager within their offerings so that you can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on the use of the programs on a continuous basis.

More information can be found on the Passport Advantage Web site

Eligibility requirements for subcapacity licensing

To be eligible for subcapacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to subcapacity terms.

For those machines running programs with subcapacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your subcapacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under subcapacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time subcapacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a primary business contact is established for their contracts.

For more information on required and entitled license capacity, license requirements, and reporting, refer to 205-093 , dated April 19, 2005.

If you order this product under subcapacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your subcapacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process.) You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.

IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software is documented in the following customer publications, which are available from IBM Publications Center at
