Overview

IBM WebSphere® RFID Information Center V1.1 builds on V1.0 to further enable the business benefits of standards-based visibility of serialized product movements across the supply chain. The benefits of sharing serialized product movement data with trading partners include increased revenue from promotions, and reduced costs for chargebacks, returns, expired products, counterfeits, diversion, and excess inventory.

What's new

  • ePedigree Feature — Unlike the offering from competitors such as SAP and SupplyScape, the IBM ePedigree Feature enables compliance with pharmaceutical ePedigree laws and supports the business benefits of data sharing. While the SAP and SupplyScape solutions only enable compliance, the IBM ePedigree Feature is more flexible since it enables multiple modes of data sharing to produce pedigrees.
  • Reporting and alerts — These capabilities provide another competitive advantage over SAP and SupplyScape. For reporting, integration of the BIRT Eclipse open-source tool enables easily configured browser-based reports. For alerts, an API was added to the powerful Coral8 engine to rapidly detect supply chain exceptions.
  • Proven deployments — For data capture and data sharing, IBM WebSphere RFID Information Center and IBM WebSphere RFID Premises Server combine to offer a service oriented architecture (SOA) with a proven track record in large customer deployments. Such customers include a top three pharmaceutical manufacturer and two top three pharmaceutical distributors, indicating a low-risk solution in the marketplace.

WebSphere RFID Information Center integrates into enterprise systems including SAP, MarcGlobal, and Manhattan Associates PkMS, then runs at line speeds with minimal disruption to operations. It can handle any form of serialized data including UHF and HF RFID tags, 2D and linear bar codes, active RFID tags, and human key entry.

  • Supports V1.0 capabilities — V1.1 supports the capabilities of V1.0, which include massive scalability, high-performance data capture and queries, query security at the attribute value level, tight integration of product and location master data, one-button installation, flexible configuration, and the Shipment Verification Feature.

Description

IBM WebSphere RFID Information Center V1.1 provides a scalable, secure, deployable, and standards-based repository for sensor information for each node in the supply chain. This system enables you to readily layer high-volume, granular sensor information into their existing enterprise system architecture. IBM designed this product through pilots in the pharmaceutical, consumer product, transport and logistics, and retail industries to support use cases including ePedigree, shipment verification, product authentication, and inventory reduction. These use cases leverage the power of the EPC Network for data sharing among trading partners.

Based on IBM's experience, leadership, and involvement in the EPCglobal standards organization, IBM WebSphere RFID Information Center is uniquely positioned to support clients in leveraging RFID to transform their business, from business strategy through pilot execution and solution to process integration.

IBM's key capabilities include:

  • Security: Enabling you to control Trading Partner® access to your repository via the EPCglobal SimpleEventQuery at the most granular level (attribute, attribute-value, and role level). The default security setting is zero access.
  • Scalability: Enabling you to capture dozens of events per second, support dozens of queries per second, and achieve a production rollout to multiple packaging lines, DCs, and points of sale.
  • Deployability: A one-button installation and flexible configuration are provided to minimize deployment costs.
  • Standards compliance: Based on interoperability tests, a full implementation of the EPCglobal Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) 1.0 Specification interfaces for event capture and query.
  • Reporting: Integration of the BIRT Eclipse open-source tool enables easily configured browser-based reports.
  • Alerts: An API with the powerful Coral8 engine enables rapid detection of supply chain exceptions and notification of the appropriate parties.
  • Integration with master data: A tight coupling of product and location master data from external sources, such as WebSphere Product Center, supports robust and secure queries to external and internal parties. This tight coupling also incorporates the EPCglobal industry-standard vocabularies for business steps, dispositions, and locations.
  • Avoidance of data and system duplication: The central repository allows customers to feed high-volume, granular sensor data into one data store, then enable multiple internal and external systems to access the repository. This avoids having to store the data in each system.
  • Data accessibility: Provides internal systems with flexible access to the repository by reporting views, configurable Web services, XML exports, and the EPCglobal EPCIS standard parameterized SimpleEventQuery.
  • Auditing: Provides a highly configurable framework for building an audit trail of trading partner queries and data capture errors. It is possible to run reports and alerts on this audit trail.
  • ePedigree Feature: Enables multiple modes of data sharing to produce ePedigrees, including the Track and Trace model and Document model.
  • Shipment Verification Feature: Provides a prepackaged module for shipment verification to maximize your business benefits. This standards-based module enables shippers to confirm receipts while providing visibility of shipments to receivers.

Key use cases:

  • Serialized ePedigree/regulatory requirements for traceability: Complies with emerging government mandates, including pharmaceuticals (Serialized ePedigree) and produce/meat tracking (regulations for tracking E. coli and mad-cow disease).
  • Shipment verification: Allows shippers to verify receipts and receivers to plan for receipts, mitigating the opportunities for theft or diversion of high-margin items in the supply chain, and reducing chargebacks.
  • Product authentication/anti-counterfeiting: Detect counterfeit product before it reaches the consumer, especially on high-margin items with high brand equity, including pharmaceuticals.
  • Shipment verification: Allows shippers to verify receipts and receivers to plan for receipts, mitigating the opportunities for theft or diversion of high-margin items in the supply chain, and reducing chargebacks.
  • Serialized ePedigree/regulatory requirements for traceability: Complies with emerging government mandates, including pharmaceuticals (Serialized ePedigree) and produce/animal tracking (regulations for tracking E. coli and mad-cow disease).
  • Out-of-stock reduction: Detects and prevents inventory shortages, especially on time-sensitive, high-value inventory including consumer products promotions in retail stores and medical devices in hospitals.
  • Excess inventory detection: Detect and prevent excess inventory in the channel, especially with high-value products manufactured in batches, including pharmaceuticals and semiconductors.
  • Expiration management: Detect and sell product before it expires, especially on high-margin rapidly decaying inventory, including perishable food and pharmaceuticals.

Overall benefits

Benefits from WebSphere RFID Information Center get to the core of your business objectives, maximizing the effectiveness of your partner relationships and improving your overall supply chain efficiency to increase revenues.

Charge metrics definitions

Value Unit

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a PoE for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

Processor (Value Unit)

A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the Value Unit table on the following Web site

With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.
