IBM System Storage DR550 solution gains new file access function with optional IBM System Storage File System Gateway SoftwareIBM United States Software Announcement 207-091
April 24, 2007
|At a glance|
The IBM System Storage DR550 solution is designed to help businesses address the growing challenge of managing and protecting retention-managed data and other critical information assets with operational efficiency.
The new optional DR550 File System Gateway:
- Offers file-based archiving with IBM DR550
- Adds a new way to access the DR550
- Establishes an NFS/CIFS file system interface to applications
- Provides enhanced availability with a dual-node configuration
- Enables DR550 archive access for Network File System (NFS) and Common Internet File System (CIFS) files
The File System Gateway Software enables many additional content management applications to access the DR550 by adding NFS and CIFS network file access.

Increasingly, many of the files that businesses need to be able to cost-effectively store and efficiently retrieve to meet business legal and corporate governance requirements are transmitted in the NFS or CIFS formats for increased standard accessibility.
The new IBM System Storage DR550 File System Gateway offers file-based archiving capabilities for the IBM System Storage DR550 solution and provides a NFS and CIFS file system interface to applications. Optional for new DR550 solution orders, the File System Gateway component comes in single or dual-node high availability configurations.
The DR550 solution offers policy-based, archive data retention capabilities and provides nonerasable, nonrewritable data storage capabilities to help address the needs of industries and businesses with long-term data retention and protection requirements.
The new File System Gateway offers file archiving capability for the DR550 solution, typically without requiring any application enablement. This capability extends DR550 functionality to a broad range of content management ISV applications that support an NFS/CIFS interface for their storage archives.
The DR550 File System Gateway Software requires the File System Gateway hardware (2229-FSG), in the context of a new DR550 V4.0 or DR550 Express V4.0 solution order. The DR550 File System Gateway supports dual-node high availability DR550 configurations with a dual-node File System Gateway; in this File System Gateway configuration, an individual File System Gateway Software license is required for each node of the File System Gateway.
The DR550 File System Gateway operates in conjunction with, and requires, either the IBM System Storage DR550 V4.0 solution or the IBM System Storage DR550 Express V4.0 solution for a complete configuration.
The IBM System Storage DR550 File System Gateway Software also requires the IBM System Storage DR550 File System Gateway hardware (2229-FSG) for operation. New DR550 File System Gateway Software orders ship pre-installed on this hardware.

The IBM System Storage File System Gateway Software enables many additional content management applications to access the DR550 by adding NFS and CIFS network file access support. The File System Gateway Software takes files that are sent using network file protocols and associates these files with an IBM System Storage Archive Manager management policy. This is done by using customer-configurable path and file naming pattern matching rules. The File System Gateway sends these files with their associated policies to the DR550, using the SSAM application program interface. Files can be retrieved using the same name and directory as they were stored under.
The File System Gateway can assign a minimum retention period to files. After this period, files are maintained until deleted by explicit action by the content management application.
The File System Gateway confirms that its file information matches the files on the DR550. This is designed to prevent files from being maintained on the DR550 that have expired per the File System Gateway assigned policy, and to confirm that files that have expired on the DR550 are also expired on the Gateway file listing.
Both the SSAM API and the NFS and CIFS network file protocols are supported concurrently by the File System Gateway Software. This means that multiple content management applications can access the same DR550 solution using any combination of the SSAM API and the NFS and CIFS network file protocols.
The File System Gateway Software runs on the co-required File System Gateway hardware (2229-FSG). The File System Gateway can run in High Availability mode by running on two nodes in an active-passive configuration. In this configuration, if the main or primary File System Gateway fails, the secondary File System Gateway is capable of automatically taking over.
The File System Gateway hardware connects to the customer network using either 1 Gbps SX or 10/100/1000 Mbps TX Ethernet adapters. The 2229-FSG connects to the DR550 using a 10/100/1000 TX Ethernet adapter. An optional 10/100/1000 TX Ethernet connection between Gateway servers is used in the High Availability configuration.

|IBM Electronic Services|
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help put you on the road to higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers a no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems.
