Express Runtime offers a simplified approach to delivering business applications to clients with one product, license, contract, upgrade, and support structure.

Express Runtime components: IBM middleware components included in Express Runtime V2.2

  • WebSphere Application Server — Express V6.1
  • IBM HTTP Server V6.1
  • DB2 Express Edition V9.1
  • Informix™ Dynamic Server Express V10.0

Solution assembly toolkit: The Express Runtime solution assembly toolkit includes development and deployment tools for creating and delivering a complete solution package with the IBM middleware fully integrated with your business application.

The development environment for the solution assembly toolkit plugs into any existing, open standards-based, Eclipse-based development environment. It can also be plugged into Rational® Application Developer if it is already installed on the development system. The solution assembly toolkit easily wraps a component so it can be deployed at a later time. Wrapping a component consists of defining the processes and configuration steps that should be performed before, during, and after installing the component. The wrapped IBM middleware components, as well as application components created by the ISV, produce a single, cohesive package.

The deployment wizard from the solution assembly toolkit drives the installation and configuration of the wrapped components. It is not a replacement for an installer. Instead, it drives the prerequisite checking, existing installation process, and post-installation configuration actions required to deploy a complete solution. The deployment wizard also enables delivery to remote operating systems. For example, you can deploy DB2 Express to one Linux system, the IBM HTTP Server to another Linux system, and WebSphere Application Server — Express and your application to a Microsoft™ Windows system.

Express Runtime console: With the Express Runtime console you can perform basic administration tasks for all instances of the runtime components in a single, integrated, Web-based administrative console. An intuitive dashboard view presents key tasks in an easy-to-navigate, consistent format. The dashboard is designed so any business user can perform the most common administration tasks for their business applications without assistance from IT administrators.

The Express Runtime console is enhanced to ease problem determination and resolution for the mid-market user. With this new feature you can:

  • Monitor log files for specific patterns
  • Analyze those patterns against a set of rules that describe some common problems
  • Notify users of the occurrence of a problem
  • Provide corrective actions to resolve, mitigate, or report the problem to the users' service provider

Both IBM and third parties can extend this capability to include new patterns, rules, and actions. Non-log sources of events can participate by formatting their events in a standard way and sending those events to the Express Runtime console using a REST style interface.

Express Runtime console toolkit: A toolkit plug-in for the Express Runtime development environment is available for download after installation. This toolkit enables Business Partners to extend the Express Runtime console with their own administration portlets. These portlets can be accessed from the same browser interface and with the same look and feel as the Express Runtime console. Samples are provided that demonstrate how to use console APIs to further integrate the business application administration with the administration of the Express Runtime middleware.

Express Runtime samples and tutorials: Tutorials help guide developers through the creation of solutions that can be deployed to single or multi-tier environments. In addition, Express Runtime contains extensive developer documentation that is both task-based and role-based. The documentation is designed to help you first understand the content of Express Runtime and then quickly take advantage of its power.

Express Runtime delivers sample IBM middleware deployment wrappers. These samples are found in the Express Runtime development environment workspace.

In addition, a complete functioning sample application is included along with its sample wrappers. The sample application is a simple example of a document management application. It is prewrapped and can be deployed right out of the box. It can be used as model for deployment and to help minimize setup errors and delays.

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

Express Runtime is capable as of April 12, 2007, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. You can request a U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT), containing details on the product accessibility compliance, at

IPLA and subscription and support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single proof of entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product positioning

Compared to the individual application, database, and Web servers that are available from IBM, open source, and competitors such as Microsoft and Oracle, Express Runtime provides integration features and tools that make it more attractive in these situations:

  • Highly repeatable business application deployments

When a business partner for midsize companies or a company with many branches or franchise units must deploy very similar business application installations to many locations, Express Runtime should be considered over individual products. Express Runtime includes a deployment technology that greatly simplifies the installation and configuration of a business application that includes an application, database, Web server, or other related components. In addition, the simple and intuitive console enables the non-IT personnel commonly found at midsize companies and branch offices to perform the basic tasks associated with business application administration such as backup scheduling, starting and stopping the application, and basic problem determination and resolution.

  • Business applications sold as totally integrated software appliances

In the traditional software sales model, business partners sell their application to a client who then has to separately purchase the system and individual middleware products to support that application. With this model the client maintains multiple relationships with the various vendors of the components that are required. In the sofware appliance model, the Business Partner owns the complete relationship with the client. Express Runtime makes this possible for business partners by providing an OEM business model and integration tools. These tools enable them to create a package that can be sold to their clients in a single transaction and with a single installation and one-time support. In addition, these packages can be customized at packaging or deployment time to include only the components required by each individual client. In other words, clients pay only for what they are using.

  • Clients who need to purchase both WebSphere Application Server — Express and either DB2 Express or IDS Express

In many cases, a client has already made the decision to purchase WebSphere Application Server — Express and either DB2 Express or IDS Express. Because they need both the application and database server, they can Express Runtime instead. Not only is Express Runtime a better choice from a price and investment protection standpoint, but also from a total cost of ownership. It scales seamlessly to a maximum of four processors with the Express Runtime Plus purchase option. By purchasing Express Runtime, a client can deploy not only the WebSphere Application Server — Express and either DB2 Express or IDS Express products, but also the IBM HTTP Server and the Express Runtime console. The entire experience, from purchase to installation and to administration, is simple and improved.

Planning information

Customer responsibilities: The customer must provide at least the minimum hardware and software environments in which the Express Runtime offerings will operate. The customer must assign administrator level authority to the user ID performing installation of the programs.

Software Maintenance is included with licenses purchased through Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express. Installation and technical support is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances your productivity, with voice and electronic access into IBM support organizations.

Packaging: The Express Runtime media packs include multiple disks labeled Installation Program, which include the installation programs for the supported platforms. In addition, the packs include one disk labeled Quick Start Guide, which contains documentation to describe how to get started using the product.

CD-ROM media pack: The Express Runtime V2.2 offerings are each shipped in one multilingual, multiplatform CD-ROM media package that contains installation program CD-ROMs.

DVD media pack: The Express Runtime V2.2 offerings are each also available in one multilingual, multiplatform DVD media package that contains installation program DVDs.

Security, auditability, and control

The Express Runtime offerings primarily rely on the IBM security provided by its middleware components.

WebSphere® Application Server — Express uses either the security features of the respective operating systems, such as local user registry or an LDAP server. Express Runtime provides an LDAP configuration wrapper that will automate many of the steps required to secure WebSphere Application Server — Express with an LDAP server. However, the customer is responsible for evaluation and selection of the various WebSphere security features, including the implementation of authentication and authorization policies. This responsibility extends to the administration of WebSphere security policies and security-related policies external to WebSphere, such as the operating environment, network topology/security, and physical security.

To protect data and resources associated with the database server, DB2 Universal Database® Express Edition uses a combination of external security services and internal access control information. To access a database server, the user must pass some security checks before being given access to database data or resources.

DB2 products interface with external security mechanisms available with operating systems on which DB2 products are supported as well as support for Kerberos security mechanism. DB2 UDB has an integrated audit facility that can be used to track data access by users. The subsequent analysis of an audit log can lead to improvements in the control of data access and the ultimate prevention of malicious or careless unauthorized access to the data.

Informix Dynamic Server Express Edition Version V10.0 leverages the security and auditability features of the host hardware or software.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Charge metrics definitions

Value Unit: A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for selected programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a proof of entitlement (PoE) for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

Processor (Value Unit): A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the value unit table on the following Web site

With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.

Authorized user: An authorized user is one and only one individual (named or unnamed) within or outside your enterprise. A PoE must be obtained for each individual user accessing the program in any manner. A program licensed under an authorized user PoE may be installed on a single computer or server, and accessed by multiple users, provided that a PoE has been obtained for each individual user accessing the program either directly or indirectly (via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means on behalf of the user.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer® platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they are help answer your questions or diagnose problems.
