Overview

From self-service reporting to complex decision systems, DB2® Data Warehouse Edition V9.1.2 (DB2 Warehouse 9) provides a base of integrated components that enable organizations to easily model, define, build, analyze, mine, and administer data warehouses and data marts. DB2 Warehouse 9 is the base for information on demand, enabling organizations to reengineer their business upon enterprise-wide, factual information. It can help you maximize the value of information assets by delivering business insight to the right people at the point of decision.

Version 9.1.2 includes three new Data Warehouse editions: Starter Edition, Intermediate Edition, and Advanced Edition. Also, the Enterprise Base Edition (renamed from Base Edition), Enterprise Edition, and Developer Edition have been redefined.

Starter Edition is targeted at small and medium businesses on Linux™ with up to 20 concurrent users per server — first-time data warehouse customers requiring the ability to transform data to reliable and consistent business insights in a single-node environment.

Intermediate Edition is targeted at larger small and medium business (SMB) and departmental customers with data warehouse on Linux with requirements up to 32 GB to work with partner BI applications and analytic tools in a 400 Processor Value Unit (PVU) environment, single or multiple nodes.

Starter Edition and Intermediate Edition are for deployment with business partners. They come with the key components for building a successful data warehouse, including the database, DB2 V9.1; the data warehouse workbench, SQL Warehousing Tool; the Data Warehouse Edition Administrative Console; the Data Warehouse Edition integrated installer; and Cube Views®. The Intermediate Edition additionally provides entitlement for the Database Partitioning Feature, Range Partitioning, and Multidimensional Clustering (MDC).

Advanced Edition is targeted at larger SMBs — enterprises and departmental customers with data warehouses on Linux with requirements up to 2 terabytes (TB) to work with partner BI applications and analytic tools in a 1000-PVU environment, single or multiple nodes. Customers with more than 2 TB of user data will need to purchase authorization to deploy Enterprise Edition.

The Enterprise Base Edition is targeted at organizations that are just getting started in data warehousing or already have a strong base of data warehousing tools. It provides the same functionality as the Intermediate Edition, only without limitations.

The added-value set of warehouse tools and infrastructure of Data Warehouse Edition V9.1.2 continues to be enhanced. New items include:

Data Warehouse Edition V9.1.2, like Data Warehouse Edition V9.1.1, incorporates the new DB2 V9.1 as the underlying database engine powering an integrated, extended platform for warehouse-based analytics. In some editions of Data Warehouse Edition, predictive analytics (data mining) and OLAP can be performed directly on the data inside the warehouse, without extracting to specialized analytic silos such as cube servers and mining workbenches. By not creating these extra data marts, either within the data warehouse or external to it, you eliminate redundancy and the key obstacles for enabling your "single version of the truth." This single copy, with a single value and single definition enables the business to make fact-based decisions on consistent analysis and insights.

The Eclipse-based SQL data warehouse workbench makes it easier to model, design, and implement analytic structures in the warehouse, and also helps populate and maintain them. This workbench can be extended by both you and your business partners with simple-to-build Eclipse-based plug-ins that enable a data warehouse control point that is tailored to your unique needs. The SQL data warehouse workbench provides for the optional IBM Rational® plug-in for logical database design and includes the plug-in for physical database design. The SQL data warehouse workbench provides a schema to a screen set of capabilities, including:

  • Easy-to-use SQL data warehouse workbench:
    • Flexible, extensible (plug-ins), easier-to-use Eclipse environment
    • Design
      • Logical ER design with Rational Data Architect plug-in (optionally available from Rational)
      • Physical design
    • Extract, Load, and Transform
    • Data movement and transformation
    • Scripting
    • Cube and MQT definition
    • Data mining
    • Debugging and testing
  • A Web-based capability for monitoring and managing the warehouse
    • Resources
    • Data warehouse applications
    • Processes
    • Troubleshooting
    • History and statistics
    • Logs and traces

In some editions of Data Warehouse Edition, the tools are included to perform predictive analytics (data mining) and OLAP directly on the data inside the warehouse, without extracting data to specialized analytic silos.

With the analytic development environment Alphablox, you can quickly build analytic information-based applications such as dashboards and scorecards. In addition, you can use Alphablox to provide warehouse-based information to broad-based deployed operational applications that provide context-sensitive information for both fact-based decisions and root cause analysis. Alphablox can enable you to capitalize on both multidimensional analysis and data mining to provide insights that are fact based, up to the moment, and in context.

IBM Non-Data Warehouse Edition Connector (Alphablox Connectors) is a separately priced feature that provides entitlement for Alphablox connectivity to non-DB2 relational data sources or multidimensional data sources.

For a detailed description of Data Warehouse Edition V9.1.1, refer to 206-262 , dated October 17, 2006.

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (POE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product positioning

DB2 Data Warehouse Edition V9.1.2 extends IBM's integrated data warehouse solution by providing new affordably priced configurations to enable organizations to build robust decision systems that grow with their organizational needs. Data Warehouse Edition continues to be available in the three previous editions: Enterprise, Developer, and Enterprise Base (renamed from Base Edition), while adding the new Starter, Intermediate, and Advanced Editions.

DB2 Data Warehouse Enterprise Edition is the flagship, all-inclusive platform for warehouse-based analytics and simplified warehouse management. It includes the full set of tooling and infrastructure to extend the core DB2 engine into a complete BI platform with built-in data partitioning. With its SQL data warehouse workbench providing design and data movement and scripting to workload management, integrated OLAP, in-warehouse data mining, and a custom analytic application development platform for inline analytics, the Enterprise Edition sets the mark in integrated tooling.

DB2 Data Warehouse Enterprise Edition is ideal for medium to large data warehouses and other BI solutions that require scalability and manageability along with a complete range of analytic capabilities. With the benefit of the integrated and extensible SQL data warehouse workbench and the common Web-based Administration Console, the Enterprise Edition provides a cost-effective platform for building and managing an enterprise data warehouse.

DB2 Data Warehouse Enterprise Base Edition provides mid- to large-scale enterprises with a data warehouse and datamart infrastructure. It includes a basic set of tooling and infrastructure to extend the core DB2 engine into a complete BI platform with built-in data partitioning. With its SQL data warehouse workbench that enables design, data modeling, data movement, and scripting, the Enterprise Base Edition can support departmental warehouses or enterprise data warehouses where there is a need for scalability and performance. Enterprise Base Edition also includes Range Partitioning and Multidimensional clustering.

DB2 Data Warehouse Starter Edition is targeted at SMBs with up to 20 concurrent users per server — first-time data warehouse customers who require the ability to transform data into reliable and consistent business insights in a single-node environment. The Starter Edition configuration is similar to the Enterprise Base Edition except that it is limited in processors, available only on Linux, and does not include Database Partitioning, Range Partitioning, or Multidimensional clustering.

DB2 Data Warehouse Intermediate Edition is targeted at larger SMBs and departmental customers with data warehouses on Linux with requirements for up to 32 GB of data that works with partner BI applications and analytic tools in a 400-PVU environment, in single or multiple nodes. The Intermediate Edition configuration is identical to the Enterprise Base Edition except that it is limited in processors, memory, and operating system.

DB2 Data Warehouse Advanced Edition is targeted at larger SMBs, enterprises, and departmental customers with data warehouses on Linux with requirements for up to 2 TB that works with partner BI applications and analytic tools in a 1000-PVU environment, in single or multiple nodes.

DB2 Data Warehouse Developer Edition has the same content and functionality as the DB2 Data Warehouse Enterprise Edition, licensed with terms and conditions for the purposes of evaluating, demonstrating, testing, and developing application programs. The product is targeted at developers.

Charge metrics definitions

Value Unit

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements that is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a POE for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

Processor (Value Unit)

A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the value unit table at

With full capacity licensing, a POE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.

Sub-capacity processor (Value Unit)

For programs eligible for sub-capacity licensing, a POE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition (utilizing eligible partitioning technologies) where the program runs. Refer to the "International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for sub-capacity terms" or the program's License Information (LI) to determine applicable sub-capacity terms.

Authorized user

An authorized user is one and only one individual (named or unnamed) within or outside your enterprise. A POE must be obtained for each individual user accessing the program in any manner. A program licensed under an authorized user POE may be installed on a single computer or server, and accessed by multiple users, provided that a POE has been obtained for each individual user accessing the program either directly or indirectly (via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means on behalf of the user.

Sub-capacity for selected middleware products

Sub-capacity licensing on a per processor or per Value Unit basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer sub-capacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli® License Compliance Manager within their offerings so that you can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on the use of the programs on a continuous basis.

More information can be found on the Passport Advantage Web site

Eligibility requirements for sub-capacity licensing

To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub-capacity terms.

For those machines running programs with sub-capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub-capacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub-capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub-capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a primary business contact is established for their contracts.

For more information on required and entitled license capacity, license requirements, and reporting, refer to 205-093 , dated April 19, 2005.

If you order these products under sub-capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub-capacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process). You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.

IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software is documented in the following customer publications, which are available from IBM Publications Center at

Limited warranty: Yes

Warranty: IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. Consult the IBM Software Support Guide for further information at

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program ("Warranty Period").

Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, return it within 30 days from the invoice date to the party (either IBM or its reseller) from whom you acquired it for a refund.

  • For programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program.
  • For programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by the customer.

Copy and use on home/portable computer: No

Usage restriction: Yes

The IBM DB2 Data Warehouse Editions (DWE) programs consist of a number of packaged components and other IBM programs. The terms of these DWE licenses supersede and replace any terms of those other IBM programs, which may accompany them. These packaged components and other IBM programs can only be used with this program.

The reference to Proof of Entitlement in any of the program-unique terms refers to your entitlement to copies reasonably necessary to conduct your evaluation under this license, and this license serves as your POE for these purposes.

The use-based charges described in this LI supersede any use-based charges that may appear in the licenses for each of these components. However, all other terms or restrictions described in the licenses for the above components continue to apply unless otherwise modified.

Usage restriction — Use as program bundle only

This program is comprised of various components and the components are licensed for use solely in combination with the packaged components. None of the included components may be used, transferred, sublicensed, or redistributed individually or in any combination of components other than as a complete package consisting of the program package as a whole, including, but not limited to, each and all of the components listed previously.

Use-based charges — Resources and Users

Charges for this program are based on the processors that are attached or are available (locally or remotely) to the DB2 Server or Servers on which it is licensed. For the sake of clarity, all processors physically in a server or machine on which the program (or any of its components) is installed count as processors attached or available notwithstanding any partitioning, "pinning," or logical separation of such processors from the program or its components. The total number of processors attached or available may not exceed the number authorized by the applicable POE or authorized by each product authorization acquired under Passport Advantage. If the total number exceeds the quantity in your POEs or exceeds your product authorizations acquired under Passport Advantage, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IPLA.

Charges for some editions of this program are based on the number of Authorized Users accessing the program. An Authorized User is one and only one individual with a specific identity within or outside your enterprise. A POE is required for each Authorized User accessing the program or any program component either directly or indirectly through any means. An example of "indirect" access would be through a multiplexing program, device, or application server.

For a complete copy of the enclosed license with the detail information regarding usage restrictions of the DWE products, refer to the License Information Document that is available on the IBM Software License Agreement Web site
