Overview

IBM OmniFind™ Discovery Edition aims to solve real business problems by providing targeted solutions for commerce product catalog search, Web self-service, the contact center, and business intelligence. OmniFind Discovery Edition provides solutions to these business problems with a search and navigation platform built on a foundation that:

  • Understands the users' search request via natural language processing in addition to perceiving the context in which the user poses the inquiry
  • Provides an adaptive presentation of the answers in a manner that helps the user take action
  • Empowers the business stakeholder to analyze and enhance the users' search experience, reducing burden on IT

By improving the end-users' search experience, businesses have been able to demonstrate increased sales on their commerce sites, improved responsiveness of contact center personnel, and greater customer satisfaction with Web self-service portals.

With V8.4 of OmniFind Discovery Edition, IBM expands and enhances these solutions. Just as it reduces IT burden with its business user tooling, V8.4 of OmniFind Discovery Edition, previously known as IBM WebSphere® Content Discovery Server, continues to reduce total cost of ownership. With its new layout editor functionality, the time required for a user to develop or enhance the presentation of search results is slashed. Using a graphical user interface, users can now change the look and feel of their company's search result presentation without ever writing a line of code. And with packaged integrations to WebSphere Commerce and WebSphere Portal, the time and effort to attain improved return on investment with IBM OmniFind Discovery Edition is further slashed.

Incorporating information from various silos within your enterprise into a single user experience has never been easier. V8.4 extends the content reach of OmniFind Discovery Edition with new packaged connectors to FileNet, Documentum, IBM WebSphere Portal Content, and IBM Workplace Content Manager. Finally, with V8.4 supporting Unicode, OmniFind Discovery Edition can solve business problems around the globe.

Beginning with V8.4, IBM search technologies will be delivered as IBM OmniFind products. The offerings will be available in a tiered fashion, addressing the various search needs for users inside and outside the enterprise.

  • IBM OmniFind Enterprise Edition, previously known as WebSphere Information Integrator OmniFind Edition, provides full-scale secure enterprise search.

Description

IBM OmniFind Discovery Edition provides a powerful set of functional capabilities, tools, and market solutions to help people easily make purchases, solve problems, and make better business decisions without expert assistance. OmniFind Discovery Edition is built upon a foundation of contextual understanding of the user's intent, adaptive presentation of results and answers, and business user empowerment to enhance the end-user experience.

Contextual understanding. OmniFind Discovery Edition has a unique ability to understand the users' intent and the application context of user requests enables it to deliver the specific information people need to make purchases, answer questions, and solve problems. The system is able to effectively process a wide variety of requests including keywords, phrases, questions, and even long-form comments like online help requests and support e-mails. It automatically corrects for poor spelling and understands concepts like synonyms and hierarchical vocabulary relationships. Additionally, the system can incorporate application context like the user's location on a Web site or account profile to derive the implicit meaning of a request.

Adaptive presentation. OmniFind Discovery Edition places heavy emphasis on providing an intuitive and rich user experience. OmniFind Discovery Edition uses adaptive presentation to guide the content discovery process by presenting answers, navigational refinement options, and proactive guidance in a format that helps people take action. This approach breaks through the standard list of links search result paradigm that forces users to mine information by paging through result lists. For example, these capabilities can be used to determine when and how to display glossary definitions or FAQs in self-service environments, when and how to display targeted search based promotions in retail environments, or when and how to display escalation paths in online support environments.

Business user empowerment. The tools to manage this entire process were developed from the ground up to be used by business managers — the stakeholders of the search application. This empowers business managers to control the online experience for their customers, without incurring the cost of engaging the IT function. This cost, in both time and money, is one of the primary limitations that restrict business managers from improving the online experience for their end users. Detailed business intelligence about how end users are interacting with the system provides business managers with the information they need to tune the system for optimum performance, thus allowing your business managers to realize the full potential of your investment in this technology.

Built on this foundation, OmniFind Discovery Edition provides solutions to solve real, specific business problems. Enhancing this suite of solutions, using OmniFind Discovery Edition as its foundation, is the focus of V8.4.

IBM Commerce Module for OmniFind Discovery Edition. The Commerce Module helps online retail and catalog companies convert shoppers into buyers by making it easier for people to find the products and services that best match their specific needs. This program empowers merchandising managers to monitor and enhance the online shopping experience to increase conversion rates, and enhance overall merchandise mix.

With V8.4, IBM Commerce customers can now rapidly upgrade their commerce search capabilities with a low total cost of ownership. By leveraging the new packaged integration between the two products, advanced search can be running on your site with half the typical integration effort. Continued maintenance of the commerce search user experience is eased with the new layout editor.

IBM Self-Service Module for OmniFind Discovery Edition. The Self-Service Module helps organizations increase online portal adoption rates and Web self-service resolutions. By tapping disparate information made available across intranets, extranets, and corporate portals, organizations can empower customers and employees to answer questions and make effective business decisions without expert assistance.

With V8.4, OmniFind Discovery Edition enhances this solution by reducing total cost of ownership. Creation and maintenance of the self-service end-user interface is eased with the new layout editor tool. And WebSphere Portal deployments can easily upgrade and manage their search experience with a packaged integration between the OmniFind Discovery Edition and WebSphere Portal. More answers are available to your customers as OmniFind Discovery Edition has extended its content reach to enterprise content management systems such as FileNet and Documentum.

IBM Contact Center Module for OmniFind Discovery Edition. The Contact Center Module is a proven customer-support and knowledge-management solution that allows organizations to increase online resolution rates, improve customer satisfaction, and enhance agent productivity by enabling customers, partners, and contact-center employees to efficiently answer questions and solve problems, taking advantage of information stored in CRM and case management applications, file servers, content management systems, and the worldwide Web.

With V8.4, creation and maintenance of the self-service end user interface is eased with the new layout editor tool. And Contact Center applications powered by WebSphere Portal can easily upgrade and manage their search experience with a packaged integration between the two products. More answers are available to your customers as OmniFind Discovery Edition has extended its content reach to additional enterprise content management systems such as FileNet and Documentum.

IBM Case Resolution Module for OmniFind Discovery Edition. The Case Resolution Module is a powerful and proven online e-mail and case resolution solution. It automatically responds to online support requests, in real-time, to speed resolutions, thus preventing costly escalation to the contact center. The Case Resolution Module requires both the OmniFind Discovery Edition and IBM Classification Module for OmniFind Discovery Edition (refer to the information below).

Interactive access to this goes beyond simple top query reports, allowing you to drill into trends and focus on what your customers are telling you through their searching.

IPLA and subscription and support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Specified operating environment

Hardware requirements

The exact configuration you need to support your environment with satisfactory response time will vary depending on the size of the objects you are working with and other factors. Individual display response times vary depending on workstation speed, memory, size of objects, and network and server workload. Minimum recommended configurations listed below need to be evaluated and adjusted according to your unique requirements. Disk space recommendations below are for the product installation and working space only.

The actual hard disk space required varies, depending upon your installation.

Note: The following are minimum system requirements. A detailed hardware sizing should be performed for each customer.

For OmniFind Discovery Edition, Commerce Module, Self-Service Module, and Contact Center Module:

  • For servers based on the Intel® platform:
    • Processor: Intel x86, or equivalent, with processor speed greater than 2.8 GHz
    • Memory: 2 GB of RAM, plus 2 GB of RAM for each additional processor
  • For servers based on the UltraSparc platform:
    • Processor: Enterprise class CPU, with processor speed greater than 1.593 GHz

IBM OmniFind Discovery Edition suite of products includes a native reporting solution that produces static HTML reports. Optionally, customers can instead use the Ad Hoc Reporting Module, an embedded business intelligence engine that allows users to perform advanced analytical operations with the report data. Note that the Ad Hoc Reporting Module requires a Windows server and a connection to a database.

IBM Classification Module for OmniFind Discovery Edition can operate as a standalone classification server, classifying unstructured content. It can also operate as a classification module for the IBM WebSphere Content Discovery Server.

The entire documentation set for the OmniFind Discovery Edition suite of products is distributed on the IBM OmniFind Discovery Edition CD. The individual documents specific to each of each of the other offerings are also on their respective CDs.

Security, auditability, and control

IBM OmniFind Discovery Edition uses the security and auditability features of the host hardware or software.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Charge metrics definitions

Value Unit

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements, which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a Proof of Entitlement (PoE) for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

Processor (Value Unit)

A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the Value Unit table on the following Web site

With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.

Sub-capacity processor (Value Unit)

For programs eligible for sub-capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition (utilizing eligible partitioning technologies) where the program runs. Refer to the "International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for sub-capacity terms" or the program's License Information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms.

Authorized user

An authorized user is one and only one individual (named or unnamed) within or outside your enterprise. A PoE must be obtained for each individual user accessing the program in any manner. A program licensed under an authorized user PoE may be installed on a single computer or server, and accessed by multiple users, provided that a PoE has been obtained for each individual user accessing the program either directly or indirectly (via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means on behalf of the user.

Sub-capacity for selected middleware products

Sub-capacity licensing on a per-processor or per value unit basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer sub-capacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli® License Manager within their offerings so that customers can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on their use of the programs on a continuous basis.

Eligibility requirements for sub-capacity licensing

To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub-capacity terms.

For those machines running programs with sub-capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub-capacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub-capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub-capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a Primary Business Contact is established for their contracts.

If you order (this product) under sub-capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub-capacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process). You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.
