Overview

DB2® DWE V9.1.1 extends the integrated Data Warehouse solution to new platforms and capabilities. It can help you and partners maximize the value of information assets by delivering business insight to the right people at the point of decision.

Among its many important new features and improvements, DB2 V9.1 includes a number of critical enhancements in its role as the underlying engine for DWE. Among these enhancements are Self-Tuning Memory Management, Table (Range) Partitioning, and Table (Row) Compression. DWE V9.1.1 also will continue to support DB2 V8.2, thus allowing existing DWE V9.1 customers to upgrade their DWE components without changing their underlying DB2 V8.2 database. For a detailed description of these and other features, refer to the DB2 V9.1 Software Announcement 206-128 , dated June 7, 2006.

Apart from the refreshed DB2 component, DWE V9.1.1 continues to enhance its added-value set of warehousing tooling and infrastructure. Some of the new items in this release include:

  • DB2 Row Compression feature to reduce storage requirements, improve I/O efficiency, and provide quicker access to data from disk. It uses a dictionary-based algorithm for compressing data records. This feature can compress rows in database tables by scanning tables for repetitive, duplicate data and building dictionaries that assign short, numeric keys to those repetitive entries.
  • Smooth "up and running" experience with significantly enhanced DWE installer and configuration program.
  • DWE SQL Warehousing Tool Usability and Scalability: Common DBA tasks such as reorg, runstats, stored procedure, and conditional execution are integrated into Control Flows. Richer DPF staging and tuning in Data Flow.
  • A DWE intelligent mining extension to the Alphablox product. It enables an easier-to-use Alphablox style interaction with data mining inside your Web-based applications.
  • Solaris 9 platform, enabling Solaris users to capitalize on a fully integrated data warehouse solution.
  • Data Warehouse Developer Edition, a per-user licensing capability to enable test and development prior to production implementation.

For details regarding DWE V9.1, refer to Software Announcement 206-049 , dated March 14, 2006.

Description

DWE V9.1.1 incorporates the new DB2 V9.1 as the underlying engine powering an integrated, extended platform for warehouse-based analytics. In DWE, predictive analytics (data mining) and OLAP can be performed directly on the data inside the warehouse, without extracting to specialized analytic silos such as cube servers and mining workbenches. By not creating these extra data marts either within the Data Warehouse or external to it, you can remove some of the key obstacles for creating your "single version of the truth."

This single copy, with a single value and single definition enables the business to obtain consistent analysis and insights. By not proliferating the data, it provides a single point of control for IS — while still gaining the deeper insights attainable through advanced analytic techniques invoking mining and OLAP.

The Eclipse-based DWE Design Studio makes it easier to model, design, and implement analytic structures in the warehouse, and also helps populate and maintain them. These optimized warehouse objects for BI can be invoked from custom Web-based applications (built with Alphablox, included in DWE) or any business partner BI tool connecting to DB2. Product positioning

The DWE V9.1.1 refresh release unifies the integrated tooling framework of DWE with the new, more powerful and feature-rich DB2 V9.1 as its underlying engine. DWE continues to be available in three editions: Enterprise, Developer's, and Base.

DB2 Data Warehouse Enterprise Edition is the flagship, all-inclusive platform for warehouse-based analytics and simplified warehouse management. It includes the full set of tooling and infrastructure to extend the core DB2 engine into a complete BI platform with built-in data partitioning, integrated OLAP, in-warehouse data mining, workload management, integrated Design Studio, and a custom analytic application development platform for inline analytics.

DB2 Data Warehouse Enterprise Edition is ideal for medium to large data warehouses and other BI solutions that require best-of-breed scalability and manageability along with a complete range of analytic capabilities. With the benefit of the integrated Design Studio and the common Web-based Administration Console, the Enterprise Edition provides a cost-effective platform for building and managing an enterprise data warehouse.

DB2 Data Warehouse Developer's Edition is the DB2 Data Warehouse Enterprise Edition licensed with terms and conditions for use by a developer.

DB2 Data Warehouse Base Edition provides mid- to large-scale enterprises with a data warehouse and datamart infrastructure that includes integrated OLAP capability and the Design Studio for OLAP, and data modeling that can support departmental warehouses or lines of business or enterprise data warehouses where there is a need for scalability and performance.

Disk space

Temporary space for installable images of the DWE components:

  • Before installing DWE, you must copy the installation image for each component to the target computer. These images are the installation executable files for that component, either downloaded from IBM or from a CD.
  • Approximately 1.2 GB of disk space is recommended for the installation images of the Data Warehouse Server components alone. If you install all of the documentation, you need another 3.2 GB.

Temporary space for running the installation program: Approximately 500 MB of disk space is recommended.

Permanent space for the installed components:

  • On Windows and Linux, approximately 1.5 GB of disk space is recommended for the installed product.
  • On AIX®, you must have enough disk space to install the entire DWE product. This is approximately 3 GB.

Memory

Memory for installing the product: Approximately 1 GB of memory is needed by the DWE installation program to install all the Data Warehouse Server components.

Memory for running the product:

  • Approximately 512 MB of memory is recommended to run the Data Warehouse Server components alone. If you run the Application Server components on the same computer, 1 GB is recommended.
  • If you add more DWE components to the same computer, you must have more memory to run them in addition to the memory reserved for the Application Server.

Supported Web browsers: Internet Explorer 6.0 with Service Pack 1 (on Windows), and Firefox V1.5 are the only browsers supported on the Application Server. However, there is no restriction nor certification of Web browsers on clients that connect to the Application Server to display content.

Disk space

Temporary space for installable images of the DWE components:

  • Before installing DWE, you must copy the installation image for each component to the target computer. These images are the installation executable files for that component, either downloaded from IBM or from a CD.
  • Approximately 2.7 GB of disk space is recommended for the installation images of the Application Server components alone. If you install all of the documentation, you need another 3.2 GB.
  • On AIX, you must have enough disk space for all the installable images for the entire DWE product, even if you are not installing all the components. This is approximately 7.5 GB.

Temporary space for running the installation program: Approximately 550 MB of disk space is recommended.

Permanent space for the installed components: Approximately 2 GB of disk space is recommended for WebSphere, the DWE Administration Console, and the DB2 Alphablox administration tool. If you are installing WebSphere into a 64-bit instance, you will need an additional 500 MB.

Memory

Memory for installing the product: Approximately 1 GB of memory is recommended to install the Application Server.

Memory for running the product:

  • Approximately 1 GB of memory is recommended to run the Application Server alone. If you run the Data Warehouse Server components on the same computer, another 512 MB of memory is recommended.
  • If you add more DWE components to the same computer, you must have more memory to run them in addition to the memory reserved for the Application Server.

Requirements for the DWE client computer

You can install client components if you purchased the DWE Enterprise Edition, Developer Edition, or Base Edition.

The following table contains the required hardware and software for the client computer for DB2 Data Warehouse Edition.

Charge metrics definitions

Value Unit

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements that is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for your specific implementation of the given program must be obtained from a conversion table associated with the program. You must obtain a proof of entitlement (POE) for the appropriate number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements of a given program cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

Processor (Value Unit)

A processor (commonly called a CPU or core ) is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multi-core technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processors require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To determine the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the processor value unit conversion table on the Passport Advantage Web site

With full capacity licensing, a POE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processors on the server available to the program or a component of the program.

Sub-Capacity Processor (Value Unit)

In sub-capacity licensing, a POE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processors in partitions (utilizing eligible partitioning technologies) on the server available to the program or a component of the program.

Authorized User

An authorized user is one and only one individual (named or unnamed) within or outside your enterprise. A POE must be obtained for each individual user accessing the program in any manner. A program licensed under an authorized user POE may be installed on a single computer or server, and accessed by multiple users, provided that a POE has been obtained for each individual user accessing the program either directly or indirectly (via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means on behalf of the user.

Sub-capacity for selected middleware products

Sub-capacity licensing on a per-processor or per value unit basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer sub-capacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli® License Manager within their offerings so that customers can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on their use of the programs on a continuous basis.

More information can be found on the Passport Advantage Web site

Eligibility requirements for sub-capacity licensing

To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub-capacity terms.

For those machines running programs with sub-capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub-capacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub-capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub-capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a primary business contact is established for their contracts.

For more information on required and entitled license capacity, license requirements, and reporting, refer to Software Announcement 205-093 , dated April 19, 2005.

If you order (this product) under sub-capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub-capacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process). You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.

IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software is documented in the following customer publications, which are available from IBM Publications Center at

Copy and use on home/portable computer: No

Volume orders (IVO): No

Passport Advantage applies: Yes, and through the Passport Advantage Web site at

Usage restriction: Yes

The IBM DB2 Data Warehouse Edition V9.1.1 (DWE V9.1.1) program consists of a number of packaged components and other IBM programs. The terms of this DWE V9.1.1 license supersede and replace any terms of those other IBM programs that may accompany them. These packaged components and other IBM programs can only be used with this program.

The reference to "Proof of Entitlement" in any of the following program-unique terms refers to your entitlement to copies reasonably necessary to conduct your evaluation under this license, and this license serves as your POE for these purposes.

The use-based charges described in this LI supersede any use-based charges that may appear in the licenses for each of these components. However, all other terms or restrictions described in the licenses for the preceding components continue to apply unless otherwise modified here.

Usage restriction — Use as program bundle only

This program is comprised of various components and the components are licensed for use solely in combination with the packaged components. None of the included components may be used, transferred, sublicensed, or redistributed individually, or in any combination of components other than as a complete package consisting of the program package as a whole, including, but not limited to, each and all of the components listed previously.

Use-based charges — Resources

Charges for this program are based on the processors that are attached or are available (locally or remotely) to the DB2 server or servers on which it is licensed. For the sake of clarity, all processors physically in a server or machine on which the program (or any of its components) is installed count as processors attached or available notwithstanding any partitioning, "pinning," or logical separation of such processors from the program or its components. The total number of processors attached or available may not exceed the number authorized by the applicable POE or authorized by each product authorization acquired under Passport Advantage. If the total number exceeds the quantity in your POEs or exceeds your product authorizations acquired under Passport Advantage, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IPLA.

For a complete copy of the enclosed license with all of the detail information regarding usage restrictions of the DWE products, refer to the License Information document that is available on the IBM Software License Agreement Web site

Software Maintenance applies: Yes

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support, is included in the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations.

IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your IS technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
