It provides access to SAP systems, integrates the SAP content with IBM leading collaboration and performance management technology, and assembles the combined SAP and IBM capabilities into role-based, high-performance work environments.

IBM Workplace for SAP Software can be configured to achieve this by providing:

Description

IBM Workplace for SAP Software complements existing applications and provides extended functionality for users of SAP applications. It facilitates the creation of new types of user-centric work processes that help enhance productivity while lowering development costs. It delivers unprecedented flexibility that allows aggregated access to information, applications, and other workers in a simplified, easy-to-use way. The complexity of using disparate applications and business processes can be reduced, allowing users to better focus on achieving desired business results.

Complementing SAP applications

By integrating and configuring key business functions into a single contextual view, streamlining processes, and simplifying user collaboration, IBM Workplace for SAP Software allows you to achieve more with your current applications, helping speed time-to-value in responding to new business requirements while significantly reducing costs.

IBM Workplace for SAP Software leverages a customers existing SAP investments by helping improve people productivity in SAP environments. It provides access to SAP systems, integrates the SAP content with IBM leading collaboration and performance management technology, and assembles the combined SAP and IBM capabilities into role-based, high-performance work environments.

SAP Software provides very strong enterprise applications across many versions and functional areas. Workplace for SAP Software preserves and extends those capabilities. Workplace for SAP Software is designed to utilize several interfaces to SAP systems, enabling access to SAP functionality. In addition, Workplace for SAP Software has pre-built interfaces to many other common applications that clients need to access.

In addition, it provides the ability to utilize additional new functions made available through the use of Services Oriented Architecture (SOA). This standards-based, open environment creates new options to mix the use of existing applications with new "services." These essentially are functional pieces of larger applications, or mini-applications that can be used to create new "composite applications." Workplace for SAP Software has many pre-built SOA-enabled services to accelerate usage of desired capabilities.

Workplace for SAP Software clients may use SOA-services components and underlying SAP applications in composite applications, creating high-function business processes designed for the greatest productivity. The composite applications can be delivered with a high degree of user-centricity, dynamically personalized for various user groups by role, as well as in context to the task at hand.

Process-centric work processes

Usually, customers have many heterogeneous applications, each with a unique view and presentation of "owned" data. However, this changes with IBM Workplace for SAP Software. Workplace for SAP Software delivers real transactional capability through a "single lens," with a common way to navigate, allowing a user to update data in real-time and in one place, by role. Users do not have to know or understand how to navigate underlying applications they are using. For instance, employees can easily and securely update personnel information through a forms-driven, multi-approval workflow. The form may be pre-filled with information from several applications, and may transparently update several systems upon completion. Another example is using sophisticated dashboard capabilities to help improve decision making while providing instantaneous visibility into business operations by aggregating data from disparate systems into intuitive, role-based interfaces that can be easily personalized by an end user.

IBM Workplace for SAP Software enables creation of process-centric, services-based composite applications versus requiring users to individually sign into, understand, and navigate each application separately. Using an SOA-services approach, the presentation layer, or what the user sees and navigates to get work done, is abstracted from the underlying applications and component services. This allows the user to become comfortable with a single "look and feel" with standard tools and navigation components.

Extended functionality

Because composite applications are composed of sets of application components, it is relatively easy to re-use components to construct tailored, personalized user interfaces and business processes. Through IBM Workplace for SAP Software, these composite applications may be extended across many access choices.

To further enhance productivity, Workplace for SAP Software has built-in tools and "wizards," which allow business users to make approved modifications to the way they view their work environment and to the data accessed. For instance, included dashboard tools provide easy-to-use options to select how graphs are displayed, where on the workspace they reside, and the setting of triggers for alerts on conditions to be monitored.

The overall functionality accessible to users is extended in several ways. As already stated, SOA services provide access to many new capabilities provided in IBM Workplace for SAP Software. Workplace for SAP Software provides many "out-of-the-box" components, which include builders, wizards, portlets, connectors, adapters, and form templates. Since SOA adheres to open standards, there are also many other providers offering functionality that "plugs" into the environment.

Some of the "out-of-the-box" composite products are for sales and executive dashboards, general dashboarding, business performance, and business objectives management. These products were designed and included in Workplace for SAP Software as a result of research indicating high-usage patterns for this type of functionality. With significant "out-of-the-box" functionality, time-to-value for implementing new functions is considerably shortened.

There are also tools for enhancing employees' ability to work together. These IBM Workplace for SAP Software capabilities help users to more effectively and proactively collaborate. A built-in alert capability ensures that users are proactively notified, in real-time, about important issues and events that affect their specific role and responsibilities. Employees can quickly take action on problems or opportunities as they arise, rather than digging through numerous reports, data sources, or applications to find issues and opportunities. Functions such as instant messaging, presence awareness, and team rooms for managing documents in context enable immediate, direct access to resources and information needed to make real-time business decisions.

Flexibility

With IBM Workplace for SAP Software, there are tools that provide a high degree of flexibility in creating the optimal user environment. Included are development tools that provide for the construction of new SOA components, integration with existing applications, and assembly of new component applications. Integrating with SAP applications is greatly accelerated by SOA-service enablement of RFCs and BAPIs, often in minutes. In most cases, new functions can be built in a fraction of the time previously required; reusable assets can be modified and deployed to speed delivery of additional capabilities to users.

Additionally, IBM Workplace for SAP Software contains profiling technology and wizards along with a simple, intuitive interface that allows the work environment (that is, desktop look and feel, business process flow) to be easily personalized for and by an end user.

IBM Workplace for SAP Software utilizes several key products from the IBM Workplace family.

The benefit to SAP-installed clients is the ability to purchase and apply capabilities to extend and complement their SAP-application investments, simply and incrementally. The combination of capabilities delivered through the user license provides a flexible set of alternatives, which may be implemented as needed to enable users to become more productive.

Warranty: This program includes a warranty for one year from acquisition from IBM or an authorized IBM Business Partner. For one year from acquisition of the program, this warranty provides the customer with access to databases containing program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which the customer can download or otherwise obtain and install.

Program technical support: Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
