Description

DB2 Alphablox is an industry-leading platform for the rapid assembly and broad deployment of integrated analytics embedded within applications. It has an open, extensible architecture based on Java™ 2 platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) standards, an industry standard for developing Web-based enterprise applications. DB2 Alphablox leverages AJAX technology, automatically handling many details of application behavior without the need for complex programming. Alphablox pioneered the use of AJAX technologies in analytics to provide ultra-rich user experience with a zero foot-print DHTML client.

DB2 Alphablox delivers various Blox components, which are modular, reusable components, as well as an application framework, a powerful programming model, and a variety of development tools for assembling analytic applications. For its run-time environment, Alphablox leverages standard J2EE application servers. It can be installed on leading commercial J2EE application servers such as WebSphere® Application Server and others.

When developing applications with embedded Alphablox capability, you can take advantage of many features offered by the underlying J2EE application servers, including enhanced performance, security, and personalization. Integration with the application server environment enables application builders to leverage DB2 Alphablox for its base capabilities related to building, deploying, and executing analytic applications, while relying on the application server to provide robust management and deployment services.

The DB2 Alphablox Cube Server enables multidimensional analysis on top of relational data stored as a star schema or snowflake schema. Create a multidimensional representation of your relational data or use the metadata from an existing cube definition in DB2 Cube Views® through the DB2 Alphablox Cube Server administration page.

DB2 Alphablox V8.4 adds a host of new functionality that makes broader deployment of your applications easier. The new functionality includes:

  • Improved clustering. In prior releases of Alphablox, when the lead node in the Alphablox cluster went down, the whole cluster became unavailable. In this release, when the lead node goes down, another lead node is dynamically selected from the remaining servers. The cluster continues to be operational and available for users.

  • New portlet that you can use in your portal application without any modification. Offers user options to dynamically switch data sources and turn on and off the menu bar and toolbar . Bookmarks created within one portlet are available to other instances of the same portlet on the portal page. This feature allows the portal user to compare different data views without having to leave the page.

  • Support for multiple client locales. Regardless of the server's locale, the Blox user interface components, the FastForward application framework, and the Query Builder tool are now displayed based on the browser's language setting. For languages that display from right to left, the Blox user interface components will automatically display correctly and there is no longer the need to programmatically set the direction.

For applications with modified or custom Blox user interface components, a set of custom JavaServer Pages (JSP) tags are available to import your resource bundles. This functionality allows you to "internationalize" your application to support multiple client locales.

  • New FastForward template for relational data sources using ReportBlox components. You can now easily create a relational reporting application using this sample template with all its built-in features, including easy saving and sharing of personal views of data and easy navigation.

DB2 Alphablox V8.4 also enhances several highly useful features that make DB2 Alphablox an even more powerful front-end tool for your analytical applications. These enhancements include:

  • Support to export data to native Excel format through Excel templates and macros.
  • More control over the layout of the generated PDF report. Application developers now also have the ability to create PDF reports without a browser session.
  • Ability to create traffic lighting effects in charts by setting data series colors based on their values through the API. Several new objects and APIs are provided for controlling the chart's legend, identifying the data point in the chart that the user interacts with, and creating custom trendline algorithms. There is also a new chart type called the contribution chart.

DB2 Alphablox V8.4 continues to expand the number of new platforms supported, including Hyperion System 9 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005, as well as vertical clustering for WebSphere Application Server. For details on specific version support, refer to the Hardware requirements and Software requirements sections.

Additional native language support has been added for Turkish, in addition to Arabic, Czech, English, French, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, German, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.

DB2 Alphablox 8.4 also continues to enhance the support for creating and managing relational cubes using the DB2 Alphablox Cube Server, with support for persisted calculated members, partial metadata caching, metadata enhancements, and more MDX functions for filtering and statistics.

Components

DB2 Alphablox delivers an extensive library of Blox components to meet integrated analytic application design requirements for maximum usability. For example, data access Blox components manage the connections between the data sources and the user interface.

Because DB2 Alphablox directly accesses the data from your databases, applications leveraging its capabilities will abide by any security features or constraints built into your database. DB2 Alphablox exposes analytic functions supplied by the multidimensional database engines (for example, ranking, derived calculations, ordering, sophisticated filtering, percentiles, deciles, variances, standard deviations, correlations, trending, statistical functions, and other sophisticated calculations). In addition, DB2 Alphablox allows you and your application developers to create custom-calculated members.

The data access Blox components also offer APIs to return data in an XML format. This opens the door to extensibility. It also enables delivery of data to XML-enabled clients including cell phones, pagers, and PDAs. Application developers can use the data in a Web service and build custom user interfaces.

  • User interface Blox components, offered by DB2 Alphablox, are highly functional, interactive, and completely customizable to improve your application usability. These user interface elements employ AJAX technology to deliver a rich user experience, including menu bars, right-click menus, and custom layouts in a thin client (no need for Java, ActiveX, or other browser plug-ins).

  • Form element Blox components generate custom HTML form elements that are useful in developing custom analytic applications without requiring developers to write custom code. All of the form element Blox components not only maintain the current state of the form elements, but also link with other components, such as data access and user interface Blox components, to deliver commonly required functionality with minimal coding.

The HTML form element Blox components can generate specialized HTML form elements that work with multidimensional database metadata. For example, the DataSourceSelectFormBlox component automatically generates a list of the available data sources in a drop-down list and the DimensionSelectFormBlox component generates a list of available dimensions for the specified data source.

  • Business logic Blox components can be used to support the incorporation of dynamic, complex business logic into integrated analytic applications.

  • Analytic infrastructure Blox components enable customization, personalization, and collaboration capabilities. Application developers can customize their line-of-business applications and personalize the interfaces to each individual user through Blox properties, Blox JavaScript and Java APIs, and application and user custom properties.

DB2 Alphablox programming model

DB2 Alphablox supports the J2EE application development model, offering a complete development paradigm for application delivery. Within this paradigm, you typically use HTML for static content, JavaServer Pages (JSP) technology for dynamic content, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for formatting, and JavaBeans components for application and business logic.

By conforming to this paradigm, a typical application leveraging DB2 Alphablox capabilities consists of a collection of JSP pages, with each page containing a combination of Blox components, HTML, graphics, and CSS. JavaScript and Java can be optionally used to enhance the application's capabilities. The DB2 Alphablox component programming model consists of the following facilities:

  • An extensive set of JSP custom tag libraries
  • Server-side APIs to the JavaBeans technology underlying the Blox components
  • Server-side access to the Blox UI model
  • Ability to remotely invoke server-side APIs from browser through JavaScript

DB2 Alphablox gives application developers the ultimate flexibility in customizing the user interface and adding their own business and application logic by exposing Blox components as JavaBeans components, allowing programmatic access to those Components through a rich set of Java APIs.

With the DB2 Alphablox tag libraries, JSP authors are not required to know the low-level technical details behind the Blox components; they simply need to know the syntax and function for each component. This enables page authors, with no Java experience, to incorporate analytics seamlessly on an intranet or extranet using best-of-breed authoring tools. Each Blox component has a comprehensive set of properties that could be easily set using the tags to custom values in the JSP pages. For example, setting the width property in the PresentBlox tag to "50%" makes this component occupy only half of the available horizontal space in the browser.

Development tools

DB2 Alphablox V8.4 is now integrated with Rational® Application Developer (RAD) V6.0.1 (English only), one of the premier integrated development environments for J2EE-based development. When developing with RAD, developers can easily install a DB2 Alphablox plug-in that will allow for:

  • Automatic inclusion of DB2 Alphablox tag libraries
  • Automatic tag completion
  • Property sheets
  • Debugging in the integrated test environments

In addition to the various Blox components and the DB2 Alphablox programming model, DB2 Alphablox also delivers a library of development tools and examples to accelerate the application development process. DB2 Alphablox examples are reusable and modifiable, and include pre-built sample queries for many of the data sources that DB2 Alphablox supports. The DB2 Alphablox plug-in makes programming with DB2 Alphablox easy through the Rational Application Developer IDE.

The Blox Sampler application is a rich set of real-world examples that illustrate essential Blox component configuration and manipulation techniques. These examples assist developers in building DB2 Alphablox applications. The primary goals of the Blox Sampler application are to:

  • Help application developers understand the various user interface Blox components and their behavior
  • Deliver tips and techniques for solving real-world issues application developers are likely to encounter
  • Offer sample code for use in building applications

The DB2 Alphablox Workbench includes the DB2 Alphablox Query Builder, enabling developers to manipulate the grid options, layout, queries, and chart type on a PresentBlox component. When application developers create the desired view, they can generate the JSP tags for the PresentBlox component by clicking the Generate Blox Tag button. The generated code can then be easily copied and pasted into their application.

DB2 Alphablox applications are created using open standards-based technologies, allowing developers to use many of the available Web design tools and source code control systems to develop and manage DB2 Alphablox application code. For example, developers can use IBM Rational Application Developer, IBM Rational Web Developer, Eclipse, or jEdit to develop DB2 Alphablox applications.

Product positioning

DB2 Alphablox is platform for rapidly creating customized analytical applications. The one-size-fits-all approaches of ad hoc query/reporting tools and packaged analytical applications fail to leverage the unique business processes in each organization. Most business users end up not using them because they are expensive to customize, if at all. On the other hand, customized analytical applications that are tailored to the unique needs of business users are intuitive to use. In turn, more business users leverage them resulting in greater impact on the business.

DB2 Alphablox, built on open standards, makes it is easy to integrate with existing IT infrastructure. It runs within a J2EE application server or portal and can connect to most major OLAP and relational databases. It also offers robust relational cubing capabilities to enable OLAP analysis on top of relational data. Neither desktop installs nor browser plug-ins are needed to connect to Alphablox-based applications. Alphablox pioneered the use of AJAX technologies in analytics to provide ultra-rich user experience with a zero foot-print DHTML client in a web browser.

DB2 Alphablox-based custom analytic applications present business users with personalized, rich, and interactive analytics embedded within the right context. Developing custom analytical applications with Alphablox is simpler and total cost of ownership is low. The scalability and improved clustering features allow these applications to be broadly deployed to massive number of business users.

Charge metrics definitions

Processor

In Full Capacity charging, PoEs must be acquired for all activated "processors" (available for use) that are on the server where the Program or a component of the Program is run.

  1. If there are Program Components included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the Program-unique Terms of the License Information.
  2. IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  3. Multi-core technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. Unless otherwise announced, with multi-core technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two (2) physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
  4. In the zSeries' Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor."
  5. Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  6. Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the Program is run.

Limited warranty: Yes

Warranty: This Program includes a warranty for one year from acquisition from IBM or an authorized IBM Business Partner. For one year from acquisition of the Program, this warranty provides the customer with access to databases containing Program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which the customer can download or otherwise obtain and install.

Program technical support: Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. Customers will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the Program and you are the original licensee, return it within 30 days from the invoice date, to the party (either IBM or its reseller) from whom you acquired it, for a refund.

  • For Programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the Program.
  • For Programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to Programs already acquired and in use by the customer.

Copy and use on home/portable computer: No

Volume orders (IVO): No

Passport Advantage applies: Yes, and through the Passport Advantage Web site at

Usage restriction: Yes

The program is comprised of various components which are licensed for use solely in combination with the program. None of the included components may be used, transferred, sublicensed, or redistributed individually or in any combination other than as a complete package.

Use-based charges — Resources

Charges for the program are based on a server install using a processor metric for the base product. The program is defined as a single image across a single SMP (regardless of the number of virtual partitions) or multiple server configuration. The total number of processors may not exceed the number authorized by the applicable PoEs or authorized by each program authorization acquired under Passport Advantage. If the total number exceeds the quantity in your PoEs or exceeds your program authorizations acquired under Passport Advantage, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IPLA.

In a machine configuration where multiple copies of the program are installed, each installed copy must be licensed separately. For instance, customers may install development and production instances of DB2 Alphablox on the same machine, but these copies may be separately licensed.

Single server only

All components provided with the program can only be installed and used with the DB2 Alphablox server for which the program is licensed, unless otherwise authorized in the license for the individual components.

Limited platform support

If the program is acquired under the terms of an IBM offering for limited platform support (for instance, the program is acquired for use on a single platform or less than all available platforms), then that program is licensed only for installation and use on the specific platforms or operating systems as designated by the offering terms and conditions.

Improved/failover licensing

In idle standby or active standby, you must acquire the correct number of program authorizations.

An active standby server has an independent, operational DB2 Alphablox server that services user transactions and queries. Because the active standby machine is used for user transactions and queries before or after a failure, it must be fully licensed. In active standby, you must license the program for the server.

An idle standby server has DB2 Alphablox server installed on it, but that DB2 Alphablox server is not processing any user transactions or query workloads. The DB2 Alphablox server is considered "idle" if it is used exclusively for administrative actions that assist in failover scenarios. In idle standby, you must license the program for one processor.

DB2 Universal Database (UDB) Components

The Program includes DB2 UDB's JDBC drivers. You are authorized to use these JDBC drivers only in association with your licensed use of DB2 Alphablox for connecting to DB2 UDB databases. These JDBC drivers may not be used for any other purpose. If your needs exceed your authorized use under this License, please contact Your IBM sales representative or IBM Business Partner.

Software maintenance applies: Yes

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support, is included in the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations.

IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each Program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM.

Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
