IBM Operations Manager for z/VM® helps improve the monitoring and management of z/VM virtual machines. By automating routine maintenance tasks and automatically responding to predictable situations that require intervention, Operations Manager allows z/VM system programmers and administrators to devote their time and focus on more critical tasks.
Operations Manager for z/VM V1.2.0 is designed to deliver:
- Improved management of the Operations Manager infrastructure. Operations Manager now supports RACF® for z/VM for access control and provides more flexible configuration options for the Operations Manager server.
- Enhanced support for console monitoring, including the ability for users to view multiple select consoles and to setup a view of a console before any output has appeared. Additional flexibility is also provided to users who view consoles when urgent or critical messages appear. For those customers who wish to monitor consoles using the OBSERVER setting, provided by CP, rather than SECUSER, Operations Manager now supports both. Based on the function required, you can choose which is most appropriate for your environment.
- Improved scheduling functions, including support for scheduling windows, as well as a point in time. Dependency and conflict management of scheduled actions is also provided.
- Includes new functions for Host Management Facility customers.

Operations Manager for z/VM V1.2.0, with automated monitoring and management of virtual machines, helps you keep control of your z/VM system. Operations Manager for z/VM uses monitoring settings to examine the z/VM environment and address various concerns before they impact your Service Level Agreements. By automating the monitoring of resources, Operations Manager can help you maximize productivity and reduce costs by leveraging existing resources and freeing your IT experts to address the most critical problems.
V1.2.0 of Operations Manager for z/VM provides the following additional functions:
Improved management of the Operations Manager infrastructure
Support for RACF for z/VM (or other external security manager) is now provided. All requests for console access, configuration updates, and infrastructure updates are verified through RACF for z/VM.
You can configure the dataspaces used by the Operations Manager GOMMAIN server to store the output from each monitored console. You can specify the size of each dataspace by defining one size for all dataspaces or defining individual sizes for each monitored console.
Actions can be defined to be executed on a specific action processing server. Previously, actions were defined as executable on the GOMMAIN server or on the next available action processing server. Now you can be more specific by defining which action processing server should be used. With this more granular control, you can define action processing servers with specific authorities or purposes, maintaining tighter control of your z/VM system. In addition, by maintaining data or status information, a specified action processing server can facilitate communication between different actions or between multiple occurrences of the same action.
Enhanced support for console monitoring
Authorized users can define a view for a monitored console even before any output on the console has appeared. This is helpful for users who wish to start their day by setting up a view for all the service machines they want to keep an eye on before those service machines are even started. Once the service machine is started, the user automatically starts seeing the monitored console's output.
Authorized users can view multiple monitored consoles in one consolidated view without having to view all monitored consoles. Users specify which consoles they want to view.
When viewing a monitored console, users of Operations Manager can specify how specific messages are viewed. For example, if the user is in autoscrolling mode, specific messages can be held on the screen and the color changed until the user specifically clears that message.
To monitor consoles, Operations Manager V1.2.0 supports the CP SET OBSERVER setting in addition to CP SET SECUSER. All z/VM differences in the SECUSER versus OBSERVER environment are maintained. For example, OBSERVER usually requires a less restrictive user class, but SECUSER can allow the Operations Manager server to send commands back to the monitored console.
Operations Manager V1.2.0 includes additional flexibility when viewing a monitored console. Users can toggle between three viewing formats:
- Message text only
- Message text with the time stamp
- Message text with the date and time stamps
Improved scheduling functions
Additional enhancements have been added to the Operations Manager scheduling function, previously referred to as timers. Actions can now be scheduled to start within a window of time, in addition to the point in time support available in V1.1.0. In addition, dependencies can be defined for each schedule, allowing you to define not only the time an action is to occur, but also what other scheduled actions must be complete before this scheduled action is started.
New functions for Host Management Facility customers
Operations Manager V1.2.0 includes the following functions, specifically designed for those customers currently using Host Management Facility (HMF) for automation, and wishing to move to Operations Manager:
- A method to automatically monitor a service machine's logon status. If the service machine is not logged on, Operations Manager can be configured to log it on automatically.
- A scheduling option for holidays, in addition to the standard days of the week.
- Support for delays and dependencies in scheduling, allowing you to define a series of scheduled actions that must occur in a specified order.
- The ability to define conflicting items for a scheduled action. If any conflicting schedules are already executing, this schedule action will not be started until the conflicting schedules are complete, or the schedule will be cancelled if the specified maximum wait time has been reached.
- Additional support for actions to be run multiple times per day and/or multiple days per week.
For additional information on the functions made available in Operations Manager V1.1.0, refer to Software Announcement 205-195 , dated August 23, 2005.

Engine-based Value Unit pricing
Engine-based Value Unit pricing for Operations Manager for z/VM is designed to provide a decreasing price curve as hardware capacities and workload grow, which may help improve price/performance.
There may also be a price benefit when you grow your capacity. Additional capacity is not priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit. Instead, additional capacity is priced starting at the capacity (engines) on which Operations Manager has already been installed.
Note: Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.
A no-charge Subscription and Support registration record will be established for each designated machine where Operations Manager for z/VM is running. These no-charge Subscription and Support registration records will be linked to the billable Subscription and Support, and all billable Subscription and Support within the scope of the engine-based Value Units aggregation will be linked together.
Subscription and Support is an annual charge and should be kept at an annual term.

|IBM Electronic Services|
IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate, but complementary, elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent.
IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
