Description

DB2 Data Archive Expert for Multiplatforms

IT executives are being challenged by the demands of ever-increasing volumes of information and by the many new compliance and auditing regulations, like Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA, that require companies to retain more data than ever before (a significant amount of that data being inactive). Maintaining these large volumes of data can be expensive and result in:

  • Higher hardware and software costs
  • Greater manageability problems
  • Lower system performance levels

To address this challenge, IBM has introduced DB2 Data Archive Expert for Multiplatforms V2.1. This comprehensive data archiving tool enables you to move seldom-used data to a less costly storage medium, without any programming. With this solution, you can save storage space and associated costs and also improve performance of your DB2 UDB environment. By helping you quickly locate and access inactive data, DB2 Data Archive Expert enhances your backup and recovery processes. Because it selects data for archival at the row level, you can precisely control which aged data gets archived with an optimal level of granularity.

Key capabilities include:

  • Facilitates moving inactive DB2 data to both table archives or to flat file archives. Archiving helps you lower storage costs and reclaim disk space. It can also help improve performance when accessing active data.
  • Exploits less expensive media for archived data and can access archived data concurrently with minimal changes to applications.
  • Provides a Web-based UI that helps configure and use the tool. This Web UI also works with DB2 Data Archive Expert for z/OS.
  • Supports archiving sets of rows representing application objects, not just entire tables.
  • Offers a callable API for running archive and retrieve operations by using units of work called specifications.
  • Provides easy creation of specifications and allows the development of job profiles through Web-based UI panels.
  • Lets you do "table-grouping" using the DB2 Grouper Component feature, which discovers relationships between tables from definitional as well as access sources, making it easy to include tables related to those being archived.
  • Supports archiving cross-platform within the DB2 DAE product family (z/OS, UNIX, Microsoft Windows, and Linux), between entitled installed products.

DB2 Test Database Generator for Multiplatforms

DB2 Test Database Generator reduces the time that DBAs spend on generating test databases. The tool easily creates DB2 test data on demand while masking sensitive data to ensure that confidential data remains secure.

DB2 Test Database Generator allows you to create test data for DB2 databases. You can specify data sources (database tables, XML, or text files) that are used to supply seed data that is used to create test data. Sets of generation rules, or actions, can be defined that are applied to the source data when the test data is generated, or the generation rules can be used to create test data from scratch. These generation rules specify how the data will be changed in order to make output data nonsensitive or how the data will be created from scratch so that it is similar to real data. DB2 Test Database Generator for Multiplatforms can access DB2 database locations on Linux, AIX®, Solaris, or Windows platforms. Key V2.2 enhancements include the ability to:

  • Compare and synchronize DB2 tables
  • Update your existing target data without deleting it entirely and then re-creating it
  • Install the DB2 Test Database Generator server on all 32-bit and 64-bit Linux platforms that are supported by DB2 UDB V8
  • Use XML data as a source for data generation
  • Speed up test data generation through concurrent generation of targets at generation time
  • Generate range extremes in the test data that is created
  • Accept locally encoded sources and generate locally encoded outputs
  • Guarantee uniqueness in generated values
  • Create your own generation rules using Java™
  • View and select from all DB2 Grouper component sets
  • Include the updatable optimizer-related DB2 catalog statistics from a source table with the source data so that the DB2 catalog statistics are re-created in the target
  • Use a JDBC type 4 driver
  • Specify that all SQL that is used for sources is to be executed with the WITH UR option
  • Have greater control over generated referential integrity (RI)
  • Specify more options when generating load format output
  • Launch DB2 Test Database Generator from the DB2 Control Center
  • Install and uninstall DB2 Test Database Generator Java Client, Multiplatform Server, and Server Administrator silently using ISMP response file

Additional detail on some of the key capabilities:

Table compare: You can compare and synchronize DB2 tables. You can compare live tables using dynamic SQL, or snapshots of a table taken at a point in time. The results of each comparison will be available in an XML file. After a set of tables has been compared, you can synchronize the source table with the target table.

XML as a source: You can now use XML data as a source in DB2 Test Database Generator.

Update existing data without deleting it and then re-creating it: To save time and effort, you can now update your existing target data without deleting it entirely then re-creating it. This prevents you from having to delete the impacted data on the target tables before the load is processed.

Expanded DB2 Load Format options: The options that you can specify when selecting the output type of DB2 Load Format have been expanded. The following options are now available when DB2 Load Format output is created:

  • ENFORCE
  • INDEX ALL
  • KEEPDICTIONARY
  • LOG
  • REPORT
  • REUSE
  • SAMPLE
  • SHRLEVEL
  • SORTDEVT
  • SORTKEYS
  • SORTNUM
  • SORTWRK
  • TABLE ALL
  • UPDATE

Generate range extremes: When generating test data, limit testing is often a challenge. Now, using the random rule, you can specify that the first two records generated will be the minimum and maximum values.

Greater control over generated referential integrity (RI): There is now greater flexibility in the way in which you can choose to have RI treated in your generated test data. These are the options:

  • RI relationships will be created in the target as they are in the source.
  • RI relationships that are detected will be created with database-managed RI in the target.
  • RI relationships that are detected will not be created with system management RI in the target.

SQL WITH UR option: You can specify that all SQL that is used for sources is to be run with the WITH UR option. This option forces the isolation level of the query to be uncommitted read or cursor stability.

JDBC type 4 driver support: You can now connect the Java client and the DB2 Test Database Generator server using a type 2 or a type 4 JDBC driver.

Accept locally encoded sources and generate locally encoded outputs: DB2 Test Database Generator creates output files that are UTF-8 encoded and accepts UTF-8 encoded input files. In some situations, such as when working with DBCS (double-byte character set) data, it is necessary to convert DB2 Test Database Generator input files to UTF-8 encoding and DB2 Test Database Generator output files from UTF-8 encoding. This is now done by DB2 Test Database Generator in order to help you work with DBCS data in DB2 Test Database Generator more conveniently.

DB2 table statistics: To help you better simulate the source environment in your target output, you can include the updatable optimizer-related DB2 catalog statistics of a source table with the source data so that the DB2 catalog statistics are re-created in the target.

Guarantee uniqueness in generated values: When specifying target properties, you can now make a column unique.

DB2 Test Database Generator DB2 Control Center plug-in: When DB2 Test Database Generator client is installed on a machine where DB2 Control Center is installed, an icon will be added to the toolbar that allows you to launch DB2 Test Database Generator client from the DB2 Control Center.

Response file install: To make it easier to deploy DB2 Test Database Generator on multiple machines, you can install and uninstall DB2 Test Database Generator Java Client, Multiplatform Server, and Server Administrator silently using an ISMP response file. This feature also allows you to update the Server Administrator installation silently.

Linux support: The DB2 Test Database Generator server can now be installed on Linux.

User-defined generation rules: You can now create your own generation rules using Java. This enables you to tailor generation rules to the specific needs of your environment.

Concurrent target generation: Test data generation can now run faster through concurrent generation of targets at generation time.

All Grouper sets displayed: All Grouper sets are displayed in the DB2 Test Database Generator user interface. In the case of known relationships in Grouper, RI generation is supported. For tables with undefined Grouper relationships, you can specify the table as a source without its associated RI. This feature allows you to select a group of tables and use them as sources so that targets corresponding to them can be generated.

Multiple table selection: You can work more quickly using DB2 Test Database Generator now that multiple tables can be selected at once. For example, if you want to make five sources from five tables, you can select all five tables at once and the five corresponding sources will be created simultaneously.

Unless otherwise announced, with multicore technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
  • In the zSeries Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor."
  • Threading, a technique that makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  • Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer® platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
