Solution Assembly Toolkit

Express Runtime contains a solution assembly toolkit that provides development and deployment tools for creating and delivering a complete solution package — containing the IBM middleware fully integrated with the business application.

The development environment for the solution assembly toolkit plugs into any existing open, standards-based, Eclipse-based development environment, or it can be plugged into Rational Web Developer, which is supplied with Express Runtime. The solution assembly toolkit environment is used to easily wrap a component so it can be deployed at a later time. Wrapping a component consists of defining the processes and configuration steps that should be performed before, during, and after installing the component. Using this environment, the prewrapped IBM middleware components are used as well as application components created by the ISV to produce a single, cohesive package.

The deployment wizard from the solution assembly toolkit is used to drive the installation and configuration of the wrapped components. It is not a replacement for an installer but is instead used to drive the prerequisite checking, existing installation process, and post-install configuration actions required to deploy a complete solution. The deployment wizard also enables delivery to remote operating systems. For example, DB2 UDB Express may be deployed to one Linux system, the IBM HTTP Server to another Linux system, and WebSphere Application Server — Express and your application to a Microsoft Windows system.

Express Runtime System Management Components

The Express Runtime console provides the ability to perform basic administration tasks for all instances of the runtime components in a single, integrated, Web-based administrative console. With IBM Express Runtime console, complexity is reduced because the administrator launches a single console that presents key tasks in an easy to navigate, consistent format.

The Express Runtime common logging provides a single, integrated point-of-problem determination for all the software components in a middleware solution. Open and industry-standard technologies are used to manage and correlate logs of various products across various hosts. It enhances administrative capabilities in the IBM Express Runtime console to provide a centralized location for monitoring and troubleshooting your solution.

Application Development

Express Runtime includes IBM Rational Web Developer, which can be optionally installed on a development system. Rational Web Developer can be used to create Web-based applications that can run on Express Runtime.

Education components

Express Runtime contains an extensive set of developer documentation, written in both a task-based and role-based approach. The documentation is designed to help you first understand the content of Express Runtime and then quickly take advantage of its power.

Express Runtime also provides all of the wrappers for the IBM middleware in source form as samples. These samples are placed in a prebuilt workspace that is installed into the development environment.

In addition to the documentation and sample wrappers, a complete functioning sample application is included along with its sample wrappers. The sample application provides a very simple example of a document management application. The sample application is prewrapped and can be deployed right out of the box. It can be used as model for deployment and to help minimize setup errors and delays.

When the sample application is deployed, the solution assembly toolkit will use the prebuilt wrappers to install your choice of express database (DB2 UDB Express or IDS Express), create the tables required for the sample application, and populate the tables with data. Then it will install and configure WebSphere Application Server — Express and a Web application to access the newly created tables, install the IBM HTTP Server, and configure the WebSphere HTTP Plug-in for WebSphere Application Server — Express. The result is a functional sample application.

Prebuilt solutions

Express Runtime provides functional solution wrappers that allow the Business Partner to deploy all of the middleware components to any of the supported platforms, right out of the box. For the Business Partner that only wants a simple way to deliver the required middleware components to their end-user customer, Express Runtime provides a functional solution that does not require any additional development. In addition, the wrappers used to drive this deployment are included as samples in the prebuilt workspaces, which come with the solution assembly toolkit development environment.

Product positioning

In the situation when a Business Partner or end user might only need an application server or a database, the individual IBM middleware offering is recommended (WebSphere Application Server — Express, DB2 UDB Express Edition or Informix Dynamic Server Express Edition). Lead with Express Runtime for those Business Partner opportunities that would benefit from preintegrated and preconfigured e-business solution building blocks (powered by WebSphere Application Server — Express) and choose between DB2 UDB Express Edition or Informix Dynamic Server Express Edition with one license, one install, and attractive pricing terms. Scalability is a major consideration for Business Partners. Express Runtime Plus V2.1.1 allows the Business Partner to scale seamlessly from one to four CPUs at a significantly lower price than the sum of WebSphere Application Server Base and DB2 Workgroup or IDS.

Planning information

Customer responsibilities: The customer must provide at least the minimum hardware and software environments in which the IBM Express Runtime offerings will operate. The customer must assign administrator level authority to the user ID performing installation of the programs.

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support, is included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity, with voice and electronic access into IBM support organizations.

Packaging: The IBM Express Runtime media packs include disks labeled Installation Program, which include the installation programs for the supported platforms. Additionally, the media packs include supplemental software disks, labeled Agent for Remote Deployment, which can be optionally used to perform remote deployments.

CD-ROM Media Pack

The IBM Express Runtime V2.1.1 and IBM Express Runtime Plus V2.1.1 offerings are each shipped in one multilingual, multiplatform, CD-ROM media package that contains the installation program and supplemental CD-ROMs.

DVD Media Pack

The IBM Express Runtime V2.1.1 and IBM Express Runtime Plus V2.1.1 offerings are each also available in one multilingual, multiplatform, DVD media package that contains installation program DVDs and supplemental CD-ROMs.

Security, auditability, and control

The Express Runtime offerings rely on the IBM security provided by its middleware components.

WebSphere Application Server — Express uses the security features of the respective operating systems, such as local user registry. The customer is responsible for evaluation and selection of the various WebSphere security features, including the implementation of authentication and authorization policies. This responsibility extends to the administration of WebSphere security policies and security-related policies external to WebSphere, such as the operating environment, network topology/security, and physical security.

To protect data and resources associated with the database server, DB2 UDB Express Edition uses a combination of external security services and internal access control information. To access a database server, the user must pass some security checks before being given access to database data or resources.

DB2 products interface with external security mechanisms available with operating systems on which DB2 products are supported as well as support for Kerberos security mechanism. DB2 UDB has an integrated audit facility that can be used to track data access by users. The subsequent analysis of an audit log can lead to improvements in the control of data access and the ultimate prevention of malicious or careless unauthorized access to the data.

Informix Dynamic Server Express Edition V10.0 leverages the security and audit ability features of the host hardware or software.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

An Authorized User (User) is one and only one individual, machine, program or device with a specific identity (ID) within or outside Your enterprise.

A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) is evidence of your authorization to use a program and is required for each User accessing the program or any component, application, feature, function, or capability thereof, either directly or indirectly, through any means on behalf of the User in any manner.

The program may be installed on one or more computers, and accessed by multiple Users provided that a User authorization has been obtained for each individual User.

  1. Users have unique specific identity and IDs cannot be shared.
  2. An ID may establish one or more connections and count as a single User.
  3. An ID may only be reassigned for the long-term replacement of personnel, machine, program, or device.

Per processor

"Per processor" charges are based on a capacity based metric, such as a processor, PoE must be acquired for all capacity, that is, active on the server where the program or a component of the program is run. For example, a customer has ordered a server with four processors. The server is shipped with six processors, but two of them are "inactive." Thus, four processors are active for the customer.

Notes

  1. IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  2. Multicore technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. With multicore technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
  3. Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  4. Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer®. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
