Description

Application development features

Enhanced integration with Microsoft .NET, J2EE/WebSphere Studios, and Web services improves developer productivity

DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition for iSeries V8.2 is a major release for application developers with enhanced support for open-standard APIs, SOAs, and Web services, plus seamless integration with the key development environments for Java Microsoft.NET and PHP platforms.

Build enterprise-class .NET applications

DB2 Connect provides support for building applications for DB2 family databases using Microsoft .NET technologies. This support is provided by two key features:

  1. Native DB2 .NET Data Provider that allows .NET application developers to use ADO.NET API or works with DB2 family databases.
  2. A set of DB2 add-ins for Visual Studio .NET that greatly enhances .NET programmer productivity.

The DB2 .NET Data Provider delivers a much higher level of performance and gives access to DB2 through ADO.NET API without a need for bridging technologies or third-party drivers. Developed in close cooperation with Microsoft, this native DB2 .NET Data Provider fully implements Microsoft .NET specification and provides for deep exploitation of all DB2 features. It also includes support for DB2 UDB for iSeries servers.

DB2 add-ins for Visual Studio .NET greatly simplify the task of building .NET applications for DB2 family servers, without leaving the comfort of the Visual Studio. These add-ins allow building an entire application within the Visual Studio .NET IDE including client portion, the mid-tier, and more important, DB2 server objects such as stored procedures, functions, tables, views, triggers, and indexes. For example, a .NET application developer can build an application form and a set of DB2 for iSeries stored procedures without leaving the comfort of the Visual Studio .NET environment. In addition to numerous wizards, dialogs, and other features, the program delivers support for building DB2 UDB for iSeries database objects (stored procedures, functions, triggers, indexes, tables, and views) as well as the ability to turn stored procedures and SQL statements into standard Web services. These Web services can be deployed as Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) Web services or they can be hosted by the DB2 Embedded Application Server that is provided with DB2 Connect at no extra charge.

DB2 add-ins for Visual Studio .NET make building complete DB2 applications a natural experience for Visual Studio .NET users. The .NET programmers should not be without these add-ins.

Accelerate Java application development

The DB2 Universal JDBC Driver includes distributed transaction or JTA support, connection pooling support, and JDBC 3.0 compliance, flexibility of iterator use in SQLJ, and enhanced interactivity with DB2 for iSeries databases. The JTA support in the Type 4 connectivity of the Universal JDBC driver enables DB2 JDBC applications to participate in two-phase commit transactions that conform to the XA-open specification, which along with connection pooling is required by many mission-critical enterprise applications. The Universal driver also implements all the JDBC 3.0 features required to be JDBC 3.0/J2EE 1.4 compliant. For SQLJ developers, multiple instances of an iterator can be open concurrently in a single SQLJ application. One application for this ability is to open several instances of an iterator that uses host expressions. Each instance can use a different set of host expression values. You can perform one operation on a table using one iterator while you perform a different operation on the same table using another iterator.

WebSphere Studio/RAD plug-ins allow Java programmers to build DB2 applications within the Java IDE. DB2 Connect greatly improves productivity of Java developers building high performing robust applications. DB2 Connect provides a Universal JDBC driver that is fully optimized for DB2 databases on any and all platforms including iSeries. Single Universal driver means no time is wasted modifying Java code to access other DB2 data. The driver provided by the DB2 development is an assurance of full, timely, reliable exploitation of all of the DB2 features and top performance.

Use Hypertext Pre-Processor (PHP) to build iSeries database applications

With DB2 Connect, PHP programmers can now quickly build Web applications that operate on iSeries data. Visit

By integrating with Zend Core — a stable, seamless, out-of-the-box PHP development and production environment — DB2 Connect allows iSeries customers to build and deploy PHP applications that deliver the highest levels of reliability, security, and uptime necessary for enterprises utilizing PHP for business-critical Web applications.

Development Center for the database programmer and application database administrators (DBAs)

Development Center provides an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for building server-side objects that does not require knowledge of a programming language:

  • Rapid, iterative development of Java and SQL-PL stored procedures, user-defined functions, triggers, types for DB2 for iSeries and DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows
  • No need to know programming languages (VB, C#, Java, and others)
  • Portable stored procedures in SQL-PL or Java
  • Enables you to build Java-stored procedures up to 10 MB in size
  • Integrated debugger — A terminate feature in the debugger enables you to quickly terminate the debugger at any time without waiting for the current debugging session to reach the end of the stored procedure

Support for industry-standard and DB2 family-specific APIs

DB2 Connect is a combination of run-time API support and an advanced communication infrastructure. The communication infrastructure includes DRDA® protocol as well as extensive connection management and security support. Connection pooling, connection concentrator, 2-phase commit, Kerberos, and other features are all delivered as part of the communication infrastructure.

A single set of database drivers that work with all DB2 family databases and support all popular SQL-based APIs:

  • ADO.NET: Implemented through a native DB2 .NET Data Provider with full transaction and security support.
  • ADO: Full function high-performance OLE DB Provider with full transaction (2-phase commit) support.
  • ODBC: DB2-optimized ODBC driver implementing the latest ODBC specification including full transaction support.
  • JDBC: Universal JDBC Type 4 and Type 2 drivers implemented by the DB2 team with deep optimization for DB2.
  • SQLJ: Embedded SQL in Java. Full function and unparalleled performance. The only SQLJ enablement for DB2 on the market.
  • DB2 CLI: Native DB2 function call interface. Top performance without the overhead of ODBC and no code changes.
  • Embedded SQL: Reuse existing business logic and skill. The only Embedded SQL for DB2 on the market.

Web services

Move to new technologies makes DB2 for iSeries understand Web services

  • Transform any stored procedure into an industry-standard Web service (SOAP+XML) with a few mouse clicks.
  • No rewrite or access to the source code required.
  • Stored procedure remains usable through any other interface such as, ADO.NET, ODBC, batch, and so on.
  • Generated Web service is completely standard; for instance, it includes standard WSDL and complies with WS-I.
  • Can be deployed into Microsoft .NET infrastructure (MS IIS), WebSphere, or using DB2 Embedded Application Server included with DB2 Connect at no charge (powered by WebSphere).

DB2 Run-Time Client Lite (DB2 RTCL) for Windows

  • .NET, ODBC, OLE DB, JDBC Type 2 and Type 4
  • Fully licensed for redistribution and connectivity to DB2 Connect and DB2 UDB servers
  • Small (about 14 MB)
  • MSI Merge Modules to make it easy to embed DB2 drivers in your application installer

DB2 RTCL is an installable component that makes it much easier to provide access to DB2 Connect and DB2 UDB servers from Windows-based applications. The DB2 RTCL is designed to be redistributable by independent software vendors (ISVs), and to be used for application distribution in mass deployment scenarios typical of large enterprises. Similar to the DB2 Run-Time Client component, the DB2 RTCL provides application interfaces (ADO.NET, DB2 CLI, ODBC, OLE DB, and JDBC) and the network libraries that are required for applications to run. The main distinguishing features of the DB2 RTCL are:

  • A significantly smaller disk footprint than Run-Time Client.
  • Shipment as a single executable, making it easy to redistribute and deploy.
  • Availability of Windows Installer Merge Modules (.msm file) that simplify the integration of the DB2 RTCL code within a larger application.
  • Terms and conditions pertaining to the redistribution of the DB2 RTCL by ISVs and in-house programmers.

JDBC driver Type 4 Redistribution

  • Royalty-free distribution
  • Fully licensed for redistribution
  • Small (about 2 MB)
  • Supports both SQLJ and JDBC

A redistributable Type 4 JDBC driver is available for download. It packages the Type 4 connectivity of the DB2 Universal JDBC Driver. The pure-Java implementation is a JDBC 3.0 compliant driver with a footprint of less than 2 MB and comes with terms and conditions pertaining to the redistribution of the DB2 RTCL by ISVs and in-house programmers.

Simplifying administration

Health Center features

Health Center provides administrators with the ability to perform exception-based monitoring of the health of the DB2 Connect servers. DB2 Connect administrators can identify health indicators that they want to monitor and set threshold values for these parameters. When these threshold values are reached, Health Center can notify administrators or execute actions that the administrator has predefined.

The Health Center has a number of features:

Health Indicator Configuration launchpad — Provides easy access to various levels of health indicator settings.

Recommendation advisor — Makes recommendations on how to resolve certain health alerts and guides you through implementing those recommendations, if selected.

Troubleshoot Health Alert Notification wizard — Helps you to troubleshoot various problems related to health alert notification, which ensures that notifications are received properly by the correct contacts.

The Control Center supplied with DB2 Connect is a graphical tool for DB2 family database administration and application development. Control Center supports numerous tasks for administering DB2 UDB for iSeries databases in addition to DB2 databases on Linux, Windows, and UNIX servers. The Control Center has been simplified and streamlined through two features:

  1. A set of views that tailor the object tree pane to the needs of the user
  2. An object details pane that provides "object-at-a-glance" browsing and simplified navigation

A set of predefined views is available for the Control Center object tree pane (that is, the left-hand side of the Control Center window). These views have been introduced to simplify the user interface for novice users while still allowing expert users access to the rich set of features they need. The basic view provides core DB2 functionality. The advanced view displays all objects and actions, and the custom view provides users with the ability to customize the left-hand object tree and the object actions. The object details pane (that is, the lower right-hand side of the Control Center window) provides a fresh, look at key objects shown in the Control Center. At one glance the user can see key status information, object details, and links to common tasks through hypertext links. This "object-at-a-glance" approach saves the user from navigating through pop-up menus. It also provides a quick overview of the structure and state of information associated with the selected object in the object tree.

Control Center features for DB2 UDB for iSeries and iSeries administrators

Control Center provided with the DB2 Connect product continues to provide easy-to-use graphical administration tool for managing DB2 UDB for iSeries.

The following commands are supported by the Control Center when administering DB2 UDB for iSeries databases. These features allow changes to affected database objects with minimized impact on availability:

  • Create Table
  • Alter Table
  • Create Index
  • Alter Index

Extended support of DB2 commands

The following DSN subcommands can now be issued against DB2 UDB for iSeries from the Control Center:

  • Bind Package
  • Bind Plan
  • Free Package
  • Free Plan
  • Rebind Package
  • Rebind Plan
  • Rebind Trigger Package

Control Center now supports the SET CURRENT SQLID command when administering DB2 UDB for iSeries. This allows for flexibility in granting access to members of a group, without the complications associated with changes to individual users' profiles.

Command Editor

The Command Editor helps simplify the tasks of generating, editing, executing, and manipulating SQL statements and DB2 commands, and of optimizing SQL statements through graphical representations of access plans.

Replication

DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition for iSeries replication includes create subscription set functionality with error checking for source-target mappings, icons for showing validated and invalid objects, and status line messages to explain missing information. The Replication Center can determine if the user has a gateway configuration and only asks for gateway-related information when appropriate. This has simplified setup and running of commands for users who have basic configurations.

Security features

System security features for Windows

  • Accepting additional special characters in user IDs and security mechanism group names (and consequently in authorization-names and authorization-IDs) including & — , and blank.
  • Accepting security mechanism group names that are longer than eight characters.
  • Allowing two-part names on CONNECT and ATTACH that contain a Windows domain name and the user ID to avoid the network traffic associated with looking up the user name in the trusted domain forest.
  • Support for Active Directory domains. For example, implicit trusts between domains, domain local groups, and nested global groups are supported.

Support for Windows local system account (LSA)

Support for Windows LSA is provided for various DB2 Connect services, as well as for applications that access them. The DB2 Connect server installation process allows DB2 Connect services to run under SYSTEM LSA as an alternative to running under a dedicated user account. You can also perform the DB2 Connect server installation itself from a process that is running under the context of the LSA.

This feature makes it easier to deploy DB2 Connect on Windows servers by avoiding, where appropriate, the complexities associated with handling of user IDs and passwords. DB2 applications that are running in the context of the LSA can access and use the local DB2 Connect server.

Prevention of access to DB2 Connect system files on Windows-based platforms

The DB2_EXTSECURITY registry variable prevents unauthorized access to DB2 Connect by locking DB2 Connect system files. By default, this registry variable is set to ON.

Access token on Windows provides users' group information

An access token is an object that describes the security context of a process or thread. The information in the token includes the identity and privileges of the user account associated with the process or thread. The access token contains information such as all the groups to which the user belongs including local groups and various domain groups (global groups, domain local groups, and universal groups).

The access token can also be acquired based on credentials cached by the operating system. In this case, the access token of the last logon can be referenced when the machine cannot contact the domain controller.

Custom security plug-ins for authentication and group management

You can create your own authentication and group management mechanisms in the form of loadable plug-ins that DB2 Connect will load and access to perform user authentication. If you want to use the Kerberos authentication method for a non-Windows platform client, you will need to ensure that Kerberos is configured on that system and then update the required database manager configuration parameters.

The ability to create custom security plug-ins presents you with alternatives to the authentication methods currently provided by DB2 Connect. You can write your own plug-ins, and then compile and install them. Installation is simple: the plug-ins must be copied to the correct directories and then specific database manager configuration parameters must be updated.

Kerberos authentication support for the UNIX platforms

Kerberos is a third-party network authentication protocol that employs a system of shared secret keys to securely authenticate a user in an insecure network environment without flowing a text user ID or password. Using Kerberos provides the advantages of single sign-on access to resources, such as a DB2 for iSeries server, and the centralization of user (principal) administration. Kerberos authentication support is extended to DB2 Connect for AIX, and for Solaris Operating Environment, in addition to existing support for Windows operating systems that support Active Directory.

This support is provided as a security plug-in.

Encryption of user data using two authentication types

To improve the security of user data, there are two authentication types that allow you to manage the encryption of user data. One authentication type, SQL_AUTHENTICATION_DATAENC, requires connections to use the data encryption. The other authentication type, SQL_AUTHENTICATION_DATAENC_CMP, allows for a compatibility mode with down-level products that do not support the authentication type. For such products, the use of this authentication type allows a connection using SERVER_ENCRYPT where the encryption of user data is not required. Any product that supports SQL_AUTHENTICATION_DATAENC will be forced to use it.

Section 508

DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition for iSeries is capable as of October 7, 2005, when used in accordance with associated IBM documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Security, auditability, and control

DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition for iSeries uses security and auditability features to encrypt user IDs, passwords, and the data that flows between the client application and the back-end database server. This ensures that only valid users are permitted access to the database servers. DB2 Connect interfaces with Microsoft™ Active Directory and Kerberos security mechanisms.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Metric descriptions

Managed processors

Charges for this program are based on the number of processors allocated to the data source running on i5 OS or OS/400® operating systems. Charges for this program are not based on the number of processors attached or available to the DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition for iSeries itself. Unlimited users are permitted.

Charge metrics definitions

"Per managed processor" charging under Full Capacity

"Per Managed processor": Charges are based on the active processors on the machines in the computing environment affiliated with the program rather than on the server where the program is run. The managed processors, which require PoEs are defined both in the Prices section of the announcement or the License information's program-unique terms.

Notes

  • IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  • Multi-core technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. With multi-core technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
  • The program may not run on some or all of the processors for which PoEs are required by the program's valuation method.
  • In the zSeries' Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor."
  • Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  • Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blades with which the program is affiliated.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer®. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
