Description

DB2 Performance Expert

To help database administrators (DBAs) simplify database performance management and tuning, DB2 Performance Expert offers a comprehensive view that consolidates, reports, analyzes, and recommends changes based on DB2 performance-related information. It includes a Performance Warehouse that stores performance data and analysis tools, as well as a Buffer Pool Analyzer that does routine monitoring with the Performance Warehouse to get a closer look into bufferpool activities.

Key Version 2.2 enhancements include the ability to:

  • Get more complete, detailed analysis of system performance based on data from both DB2 and the operating system
    • Displays file systems, processes, CPU/memory usage, and more
    • Includes user-defined exception thresholds on OS system parameters
    • Provides long-term availability in the Performance Warehouse (PWH)
  • Get early warnings of emerging tablespace bottlenecks
    • Displays additional tablespace information about allocated, used, and free space on different levels
    • Provides predefined and user-defined "File System Full" and "DMS tablespace full" exception thresholds
  • More quickly anticipate emerging DB2 performance problems and get faster access to exception conditions
    • Displays exception status of monitored instance using signal light indicators
    • Drills down to show problem details
    • Shows exception highlighting in online monitor panels
    • Provides predefined threshold sets for online transaction processing (OLTP) and business intelligence databases
  • Simplify monitoring and get better task efficiency to identify trends and anticipate emerging DB2 performance problems
    • Includes more precalculated ratios, percentages, and averages (such as asynchronous read ratio)
    • Includes evolution graphs
  • Quickly and more easily configure the tool out-of-the-box, even in larger, mixed-platform environments
    • Reuses catalog entries of remote entries (Discovery)
    • Includes Key=Value format for silent configuration
    • Supports cross-platform monitoring for non-shared file system environments (Windows-UNIX/Linux, UNIX/Linux-Windows)

DB2 Performance Expert Version 2.2 also includes installation enhancements, support for Linux on pSeries 64-bit, and support of new snapshot data groups introduced with DB2 V8.2.

DB2 Recovery Expert

New Fast Backup function: The use of Network Storage SAN (storage area network) and NAS (network-attached storage) provides powerful hardware-based fast copy features like Snapshot, TimeFinder, and FlashCopy. These advanced features are extremely attractive to the DBA because they can be used to back up very large databases in just seconds.

RE Fast Backup provides an easy-to-use Windows DB2 Control Center user interface that will guide the DBA through the steps to create backup specifications to use Fast Backup for a database or a set of table spaces. The DBA only needs to specify the database or the table space name. When the Fast Backup command is invoked, it will handle the network storage device commands and issue the appropriate DB2 commands to ensure that the backup is consistent. Fast Backup can be run from the GUI or scheduled to execute in batch.

RE Fast Backup provides a very fast database backup (where the data is available for read/write operations during backup) or table space backup (where the data is available for read operations during the backup) by exploiting the hardware-assisted fast volume backup technology of storage hardware. Current hardware support includes:

  • IBM Enterprise Storage Server™ Model F20, or compatible, with FlashCopy
  • Hitachi Freedom Storage Lighting 9900V series, or compatible, with Hitachi ShadowImage software
  • EMC Symmetrix DMX800 Series, or compatible, with TimeFinder/mirror
  • NEC iStorage S Series S4100, or compatible, with Dynamic Data Replication
  • Netapp Filer F700 Series, or compatible, with Snapshot software and SnapRestore software

These fast backups are considered a new recovery asset for DB2 Recovery Expert and can be used during a database or table space point-in-time recovery.

DB2 Grouper Component Integration: Through the use of the DB2 Grouper Component, the critical complexities of referential constraints are provided with DB2 Recovery Expert as well as an advanced ability to recognize other table relationships. This assures the DB2-enforced referential integrity, application-enforced referential integrity, and other key relationships will be accurately presented to the user when using Fast Backup and when recovering an object.

New objects supported for recovery: Recovery Expert V1 provided support to recover a database, table space, or table. Recovery is now enhanced to support the recovery of additional dependent DB2 object types. For example, with Version 2, you can now recover object types implemented in SQL such as procedures and user-defined functions (UDFs).

Log Analysis enhancements: Log Analysis provides an easy-to-use method to analyze the DB2 log files for a specific database. You can create reports that detail the changes to data for a window of time or for a set of logs. Now with Version 2, you can also report on a set of AUTHIDs. Log Analysis will also create REDO or UNDO SQL to rapidly recover data to a desired point-in-time. Enhancements have been added to now support large object (LOB) data and long VARCHAR in the log analysis reports and when generating REDO/UNDO SQL.

Maintaining the Versioning Repository: DB2 Recovery Expert is enhanced to provide Versioning Repository (VR) maintenance via the GUI or by command, allowing the DBA to keep the VR size in check. The user will now have the option to delete objects in the Versioning Repository that existed prior to the oldest full offline backup.

Additional platform support1: 64-bit DB2 V8 on:

  • AIX®
  • Solaris
  • Linux on xSeries®
  • Linux on pSeries

Charge metrics definitions

"Per processor" charging under Full Capacity

In Full-Capacity charging — where charges are based on a capacity-based metric, such as a processor, PoEs must be acquired for all capacity that is active on the server where the program or a component of the program is run.

As an example, a customer has ordered a server with four processors. The server is shipped with six processors, but two of them are "inactive." Thus, four processors are active for the customer.

Notes

  1. IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  2. Multi-core technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. With multi-core technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two (2) physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
  3. In the zSeries Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor."
  4. Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  5. Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer®. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
