What's new in DB2 Content Manager Enterprise Edition V8.3

Document routing and workflow enhancements

Document routing is enhanced to include decision points, actions, action lists, parallel routing, and line-of-business access nodes. In addition, a new graphical builder within the system administration client enables non-technical business users to define document routing processes.

  • The decision point capability enables decision making in the process based on the item attributes (for example, claim amount < 1000), process properties (for example, process priority > 100), and process container data (for example, decision = approve).
  • Through actions and action lists, users can define custom operations in the process.
  • The parallel routing capability allows the concurrent processing of a document or folder through the process.
  • The line-of-business access node supports the integration of your process with external line-of-business business logic.
  • The graphical process builder supports the process modeling of simple sequential routing and sophisticated routing with decision points, actions/action lists, parallel routing, and line-of-business access. With the ease of use of the builder, you can delegate modeling and deploying processes to non-technical business users.

In addition, DB2 Content Manager provides sample code and documentation to enable integration with the Process Choreographer (PC) component of WebSphere Business Integrator Server Foundation V5.1. Process Choreographer is an alternative to document routing. Using Process Choreographer allows you to treat DB2 Content Manager-based processes as a subtype of existing overall business processes. For document routing users, it allows future extensions of document-centric business processes beyond the content repository. It also allows you to integrate heterogeneous business applications with DB2 Content Manager. It provides the following features:

  • Operating system-independent development generating operating system-specific code
  • Application scalability and failover mechanisms, including on demand style flexible provisioning
  • Ability to tie in any type of legacy application
  • Support of Web Services Description Language (WSDL) and Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) standards

XML schema mapping utility

A new XML schema mapping utility simplifies the process of defining the DB2 Content Manager schema to support incoming XML documents adhering to specific XML schemas. The utility will dynamically map an XML schema to a DB2 Content Manager schema either automatically (including creating the new DB2 Content Manager schema) or manually through the use of the graphical XML schema mapping utility. Once the mapping is generated, XML documents adhering to the mapped XML schema may be captured, shredded, stored, and managed in DB2 Content Manager automatically, with no human interaction.

XML support enhancements

The system administration client enables the user to export the system administration data into an XML readable file and import that data from an XML file. This capability enables the user to copy the administrative settings from one server to another by exporting the information and importing it into other systems.

Web services

Web services is a standards-based mechanism for accessing a system using XML-based messaging over a messaging bus based on the HTTP protocol. DB2 Content Manager V8.3 delivers a set of out-of-the-box Web services operations. The DB2 Content Manager Web services support leverages the power of WebSphere Application Server and the DB2 Content Manager Java™ stack to support remote access to DB2 Content Manager functionality and semantics. Using the Web services interface lets users integrate applications with DB2 Content Manager regardless of the programming language the applications were written in or the platform they run on.

Some key features are:

  • Support for .NET client applications including support for DIME attachments
  • Support for Java and J2EE client applications including support for MIME attachments
  • Support for automatically generating WSDLs specific to your system
  • Support for all core content and document routing functions

Records management enablement

Together, DB2 Records Manager V4.1 and DB2 Content Manager V8.3 deliver a dynamic records management framework enabling touch-free records management of all forms of content. Records Enabler allows DB2 Content Manager to work with DB2 Records Manager to provide an electronic records management solution for any business enterprise. Records management applications enable customers to digitally manage the lifecycle of their business information and more easily comply with record keeping mandates and regulatory guidelines.

The Records Enabler feature adds records management capabilities to existing e-mail, groupware, and document management clients such as DB2 Content Manager Client for Windows™, DB2 Content Manager eClient, DB2 Document Manager, Microsoft Office (requires DB2 Document Manager), Lotus Notes® client, and Microsoft Outlook clients (requires DB2 CommonStore for Lotus® Domino™ or DB2 CommonStore for Exchange Server). With Records Enabler, users can declare any corporate document or information as corporate records, either manually or touch-free via automated declare/classify.

Once a document is declared as a record, the document and associated DB2 Content Manager metadata of the record remain in the DB2 Content Manager repository, and they cannot be edited or deleted without the proper authorization. The associated record information is stored in the DB2 Records Manager system.

The access permissions and lifecycle of the record and its content are governed by the access permissions and lifecycle rules that are defined for the record in the DB2 Records Manager system. Only authorized users such as the records administrators can process or manage the lifecycle of the records.

Records Enabler provides extensions that are required to be installed on the DB2 Records Manager system. DB2 Records Manager is available as a separately licensed and priced product from IBM. For additional information about DB2 Records Manager, refer to Software Announcement 204-287 , dated November 30, 2004.

Support for Oracle databases (AIX®, Windows, Solaris platforms only)

DB2 Content Manager V8.3 adds support for deployment on Oracle databases for the storage and management of the metadata stored in both library server and resource manager. Migration tools are provided by Web download, which allows DB2 Content Manager V7 with Oracle to migrate to DB2 Content Manager V8.3 with Oracle 9i. DB2 Content Manager on Oracle includes full text search capability. The Federated C++ Connector is not supported in an Oracle environment.

Query (search) enhancements

The query function in DB2 Content Manager is enhanced to include the following support:

  • Query on checked-out items
  • Row-based view filtering in query
  • Get the count of query results without getting the results themselves
  • Use of the IN operator to compare an attribute's value to a list of values
  • Internal query optimization to reduce the length of the generated SQL statements

Serviceability improvements

DB2 Content Manager V8.3 provides logs with similar characteristics, which cover most system components:

  • The system administration client now provides the log control utility, which you can use to set log and trace parameters for multiple system components
  • A default common directory for all log files
  • A standard log file timestamp format using Greenwich Mean Time
  • Logging information related only to a single user ID
  • A unique log ID used to correlate logs across different system components

Installation improvements

The installation programs for DB2 Content Manager, DB2 Information Integrator for Content, and DB2 Content Manager eClient are redesigned to provide commonality for all operating systems, consistent product interoperability, and an improved installation experience. Installation enhancements include:

  • Selectively install product features; some features are shareable among the products.
  • The installation programs for DB2 Content Manager and DB2 Information Integrator for Content now include time saving "typical" installation paths, which greatly reduce the complexity of user input for common installations. The custom paths are reorganized to improve clarity and consistency.

  • Prerequisite checking is redesigned to be more flexible and precise, thus facilitating a wider range of installation topologies, and allowing the flexibility to extend capabilities.
  • Automatic configuration of the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) of the IBM HTTP Server shipped with WebSphere Application Server V5.1 and used by the DB2 Content Manager resource manager.
  • Online help is available for installation panels that provides information about default values and limitations for fields, and relevant background information.
  • User IDs needed during the installation can be created automatically by the installation process to reduce the pre-installation preparation effort.
  • Launchpad is available on all supported platforms, allowing access to the documentation, to start the Planning and Installation Assistant, and to launch the installation.
  • The upgrade installation from existing systems is much improved to follow the same process as new installations.
  • Users can run a validation utility to validate if their product installation and configuration was successful.

Accessibility improvement

Accessibility features help users with a physical disability, such as restricted mobility or limited vision, to use software products successfully. DB2 Content Manager V8.3 enhances product accessibility features. For example, new shortcuts have been added to help you operate all features using the keyboard instead of the mouse.

Security enhancements

Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 is a standard published by NIST for U.S. Federal Government on security requirements for cryptographic modules used in computer systems protecting sensitive, but unclassified information. FIPS 140-2 compliance is mandated for all federal government IT systems and product procurements. Another mandatory security standard, Common Criteria, also points to FIPS 140-2 for certification on cryptographic modules.

DB2 Content Manager Enterprise Edition uses the FIPS 140-2 approved cryptographic providers; IBMJCEFIPS (certificate 376), IBMJSSEFIPS (certificate 409) and IBM Crypto for C (ICC (certificate 384) for cryptography. The certificates are listed on the NIST Web site at

What's new in DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger™ V8.3

DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger V8.3 introduces a new streaming technology called Adaptive Rich Media Streaming (ARMS) that addresses the core problems IT organizations have with streaming media on their networks. Previously, rich media applications would compromise the ability of IT staffs to balance resource allocation for all of their business data. With ARMS, media is securely delivered in a predictable, controlled manner that protects your network with the best allowable quality within the bitrate budget. Managed streaming puts video streaming under business controls and minimizes interference with business data on shared networks to maximize the media quality within the available bandwidth, not having to select the lowest quality based on worst-case assumptions. This enables Web sites, for instance, to post a single digital media file that is adapted in real-time to network conditions, rather than posting several digital media files of varying quality. More importantly, it allows greatly reduced network costs since you can utilize lower average bitrate and smaller files. It allows faster initial rollout, since you can start with existing network infrastructure, then improve quality as network bandwidth becomes available knowing you have dynamic stream management that adapts to changing network conditions.

IBM is partnering with leading technology companies to provide a content packaging technique for MPEG-4 so content can be secured (encrypted) at the content publisher, and then exported to service providers deploying streaming edge servers. The content can be streamed robustly from delivery servers, adapting to available bandwidth, client capabilities, packet loss, and supporting client interactivity while maintaining full content security. The content remains in its secure container until it is delivered to the client. With this technology, security is maintained from the Content Publisher to the client, providing a high quality of service with moderate resource cost. Additionally, the content can be securely cached at network edge servers with full stream adaptation capability.

DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger, when combined with DB2 Content Manager, can now "coexist" with the Microsoft Windows Media Server on the same Windows Server platform to provide a single management interface from the DB2 Content Manager system. DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger will stream all the standards-based formats such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, and the Windows Media Server will stream the Windows Media Formats. The digital media content is managed via the standard DB2 Content Manager interfaces, with access control, content metadata search, and so on.

New price structure

With this announcement, DB2 Content Manager Enterprise Edition has a new price structure. This new price structure provides simplicity in pricing and a lower entry point for DB2 Content Manager Enterprise. The new price structure is based on authorized users, with optional priced features for DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger and DB2 Content Manager Connector for Relational Databases.

Your current DB2 Content Manager server and DB2 Content Manager concurrent user licenses will be converted to DB2 Content Manager authorized users at your next maintenance renewal. Refer to the Charge structure section for additional information.

Charge structure

DB2 Content Manager Enterprise Edition is priced to deliver total business value to the user. The current server plus concurrent user model is being replaced by an authorized user model with optional priced features.

DB2 Content Manager Enterprise Edition has the following new charge structure:

  • Authorized user
  • Per processor for DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger
  • Per connector for DB2 Content Manager Connector for Relational Databases

Your current DB2 Content Manager concurrent user licenses will be converted to DB2 Content Manager authorized users at your next maintenance renewal. Each DB2 Content Manager concurrent user license under active maintenance will be converted to five DB2 Content Manager authorized user licenses. DB2 Content Manager server licenses will be made obsolete; however, DB2 Content Manager server licenses will be converted to two DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger processor licenses at maintenance renewal.

Each DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger server license under active maintenance will be converted to two DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger processor licenses at your next maintenance renewal. The existing DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger server license will be made obsolete.

For example, if you have one DB2 Content Manager server license and 100 DB2 Content Manager concurrent user licenses under active maintenance, you will be entitled to two DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger processors and 500 DB2 Content Manager authorized users when your maintenance is renewed. You are entitled to install as many DB2 Content Manager servers (refer to the License terms section) as required to support your licensed DB2 Content Manager authorized users.

In addition, if you have two DB2 Content Manager VideoCharger server licenses under active maintenance, you will be entitled to four VideoCharger processor licenses when your maintenance is renewed.

If you are licensed for DB2 Content Manager Entry Offering, your concurrent user licenses will be converted to DB2 Content Manager authorized users at your next maintenance renewal. Each DB2 Content Manager Entry Offering concurrent user license under active maintenance will be converted to five DB2 Content Manager authorized user licenses.

If you are licensed to DB2 Content Manager e-Mail Archive Offering, each DB2 Content Manager e-Mail Archive Solution server license under active maintenance will be converted to 20 DB2 Content Manager authorized user licenses as your entitlement to use DB2 Content Manager as DB2 CommonStore archive repository. Each DB2 Content Manager e-Mail Archive Solution registered user license under active maintenance will be converted to a DB2 CommonStore for Lotus Domino authorized user license at your next maintenance renewal. If requested, you may convert your DB2 Content Manager e-Mail Archive Solution registered user licenses to DB2 CommonStore for Exchange Server authorized user licenses. DB2 Content Manager e-Mail Archive Solution Gateway Access licenses will be made obsolete and not renewed.

For example, if you have one DB2 Content Manager e-Mail Archive Solution server license, one DB2 Content Manager e-Mail Archive Solution Gateway Access license and 1,500 DB2 Content Manager e-Mail Archive Solution registered user licenses under active maintenance, you will be authorized for 1,500 DB2 CommonStore for Lotus Domino authorized user licenses and 20 DB2 Content Manager authorized user licenses at your next maintenance renewal.

The initial order quantity of DB2 Content Manager must consist of at least 20 authorized users. After the initial order, additional users may be ordered in any number necessary to support your specific environment.

Trade-up options are available for organizations currently licensed to DB2 Content Manager OnDemand for Multiplatforms only, or with a limited use license to DB2 Content Manager through another IBM product such as WebSphere Portal.

Records Enabler is provided with DB2 Content Manager and enables records management with DB2 Records Manager. DB2 Records Manager is available as a separately priced and licensed product.

Your license to the DB2 Content Manager Enterprise Edition Program entitles you to install, from the program package, the DB2 Content Manager program server, the DB2 Content Manager OnDemand program server, the DB2 Content Manager records enabler server, and the DB2 Information Integrator for Content program server on any combination of servers as required to support your licensed DB2 Content Manager authorized users. You may install more than one instance of these servers on one or more servers as is necessary to support up to the number of authorized users specified in the Proof of Entitlement (PoE).

Authorized user

An authorized user authorization must be obtained for each individual user accessing the program in any manner. Each authorized user authorization is attributable to one and only one individual user, either within or outside your enterprise. An authorized user authorization is required for each individual user who accesses the program or any component, application, feature, function, or capability thereof, either directly or indirectly, through any means on behalf of the user. Users require authorization for accessing content managed within, or distributed from the program server. Each authorized user authorization entitles one individual user to establish one or more connections to any number of DB2 Content Manager or DB2 Content Manager OnDemand Program servers across any of the supported platforms. An authorized user authorization may only be reassigned for the long-term replacement of personnel. The programs may be installed on one or more computers, and accessed by multiple users, provided that an authorized user authorization has been obtained for each individual user.
