At a glance

IBM DB2 Universal Database (UDB) Data Warehouse Edition (DWE), V8.2.1 integrates the Web-based analytics and reporting of DB2 Alphablox with the data mining, online analytical processing (OLAP), and extract, transform, and load (ETL) already available. The addition of DB2 Alphablox to DWE provides a truly comprehensive BI platform operating on common data structures within the data warehouse.

The inline analytics approach of DB2 Alphablox in DWE allows you to:

  • Develop and deploy end-user solutions leveraging the warehouse via zero-client Web-based applications and portals
  • Integrate analytics, reporting, and query in quick-to-deploy applications that are customized to each user's role and context
  • Deliver multidimensional OLAP-style cube viewing, navigation, and analytics using DB2 as the back-end data server

Overview

The latest release of DB2 Universal Database® (UDB) Data Warehouse Edition (DWE) further empowers you by adding world-class Web-based analytics and reporting to the existing end-to-end platform. With DB2® Alphablox, DB2 DWE rounds out the carefully selected set of IBM Business Intelligence (BI) products to provide the essential infrastructure needed to extend the enterprise data warehouse as a platform for BI. DB2 Alphablox also can be deployed in operational applications to provide inline or embedded analytics, extending the DWE value-add beyond the data warehouse environment.

What's new?

DB2 Alphablox extends DWE with an industry-leading platform for the rapid assembly and broad deployment of integrated analytics and report visualization embedded within applications. DB2 Alphablox has an open, extensible architecture based on Java™ 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) standards, an industry standard for developing Web-based enterprise applications. DB2 Alphablox simplifies and speeds deployment of analytical applications by automatically handling many details of application behavior without the need for complex programming.

DB2 Alphablox provides various Blox components, which are modular, reusable components, as well as an application framework, a powerful programming model, and a variety of development tools for assembling analytic applications. For its run-time environment, DB2 Alphablox in DWE runs on WebSphere® Application Server and accesses data in the DB2 data warehouse.

As delivered in both Enterprise and Standard DWE editions, DB2 Alphablox includes the DB2 Cube Views metadata bridge. The synergistic combination of these technologies in DWE means DB2 Alphablox applications, using the relational cubing engine, can connect directly to the DB2 warehouse and still enjoy a significant range of multidimensional analytics and navigation, along with the performance acceleration of DB2 Cube Views. DB2 Alphablox in DWE also includes the standard relational reporting component, adding value in environments where SQL is important for reporting applications.

Because DB2 Alphablox is intended to access data solely through the DB2 data warehouse (including remote heterogeneous data sources via optional II federation), this version of DB2 Alphablox in DWE does not include multidimensional connectors for accessing non-relational MOLAP-style cube servers, nor does it include relational connectors for other IBM or non-IBM databases. These connectors are available via separate licensing.

None of the included components may be used, transferred, sublicensed or redistributed individually or in any combination of components other than as a complete package consisting of each and all of the components listed above.

Use-based charges — Resources

Charges for this program are based on the processors that are attached or available to the DB2 Universal Database (UDB) Server to which it is licensed. The total number of processors attached or available may not exceed the number authorized by the applicable Proofs of Entitlement or authorized by each product authorization acquired under Passport Advantage. If the total number exceeds the quantity in your Proofs of Entitlement or exceeds your product authorizations acquired under Passport Advantage, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IPLA.

The IBM Office Connect Professional Edition component of this program is licensed on a per user basis. Each Proof of Entitlement or product authorization for the program includes a license to IBM Office Connect Professional Edition for use by up to five users.

Resource and use restriction

The following restrictions or exceptions apply to the use of the program:

  • Use of this program is restricted to servers with up to four processors per server
  • High Availability Disaster Recovery is not available on DB2 Universal Database Workgroup Server Unlimited Edition
  • Maximum memory per server is 32G

Use with DB2 UDB Workgroup Server Unlimited Edition

Any prohibition in the individual license of any included components, preventing use with IBM DB2 UDB Workgroup Server Unlimited V8.2, does not apply. All of the components of IBM DB2 UDB Data Warehouse Standard Edition V8.2.1 are excepted from such restriction as long as the other restrictions specified in these program-unique terms are observed.

You are authorized to install and use these components only with DB2 UDB Data Warehouse Edition server. The DB2 Alphablox code included with DB2 UDB Data Warehouse Edition may only be used with data stored or accessed through DB2 Data Warehouse Edition database.

High availability/failover licensing

After the server is licensed, it can be used to service user workload. In high availability scenarios, this server is called a Primary server; additional servers acting as backups are called Standby servers that may be deployed in Active or Idle configurations.

In active standby or idle standby, you must acquire the correct number of processors entitlements in addition to the processor entitlements you obtained for the primary server.

In an active standby configuration, the program is operational on all servers to service user transactions or queries. Because each of the active standby servers is used to operate the program for user transactions or queries before or after a failure, the program must be fully licensed. In active standby, you must license the program for the number of processors attached or available to the active standby servers. For example, consider an environment with three servers, one primary server with four processors and the other two are active standby servers with two processors each. This environment must be licensed for eight processors (four for primary and two plus two for active standby).

In an idle standby configuration, idle standby servers have the program installed, however, they do not have the program operational to service user transactions or query workloads. A server is considered "idle" if it is used exclusively for administrative actions that assist in failover scenarios such as having a database in rollforward pending state to support log shipping, or in making a flash copy of a DB2 database and then performing a database backup of this copy on another server. In idle standby, you must license the program for one processor per idle server only, regardless of the number of processors attached or available to the server. For example, consider an environment with three servers, one primary server with four processors and the other two are idle standby servers with two processors each. This environment must be licensed for six processors (four for primary and one plus one for idle standby).

Program components

The program contains components which are provided to support your authorized use of the program on server machines within your enterprise. If you want to perform multiple installations and/or distribution of these components, you must contact IBM or its reseller to obtain the appropriate licenses. The following are the exceptions:

High availability/failover licensing

After the server is licensed, it can be used to service user workload. In high availability scenarios, this server is called a Primary server; additional servers acting as backups are called Standby servers that may be deployed in Active or Idle configurations.

In active standby or idle standby, you must acquire correct number of processors entitlements in addition to the processor entitlements you obtained for the primary server.

DB2 UDB program components

The program contains components which are provided to support your authorized use of the program on server machines within your enterprise. If you want to perform multiple installations and/or distribution of these components, you must contact IBM or its reseller to obtain the appropriate licenses.

The following are the exceptions for ESE only

  • A separately chargeable database partitioning feature of DB2 UDB ESE provides the ability to create multiple database partitions on a single server or across multiple servers, while preserving a single database image of the data. An entitlement to this feature, licensed on per processor basis for every processor in the single database image across a single or multiple server configuration, must be acquired separately before operating the feature.
  • Entitlement to a separately chargeable geodetic feature of DB2 UDB ESE, licensed on per processor basis for every processor, must be acquired separately before installing or operating the feature.
  • Use of the DB2 Connect® component is limited to five registered users per server. This product contains DB2 Connect component to provide connectivity, DB2 for z/OS® for OS/390®, DB2 Server for VSE and VM and DB2 for iSeries™ database servers. If additional users need to connect to any of the above mentioned database servers, a separate DB2 Connect program must be acquired.
