Description

DB2 Test Database Generator

As data volumes escalate and applications (and the databases that support them) become increasingly more critical and complex, the need for test environments on demand continues to grow. A database administrator's valuable time can quickly be consumed if a comprehensive tool for creating test environments is not available, especially when documentation for existing production databases is scarce.

In addition, testing a variety of hypotheses and scenarios can significantly increase the need for a robust test database generation tool since multiple database versions have to support many different scenarios. Reliable testing of new databases and applications (or troubleshooting existing ones that are causing errors) also requires a completely accurate, realistic test environment that is precisely tailored to meet the needs of skilled developers and administrators.

DB2 Test Database Generator is a powerful tool for rapidly producing test data that reflect the real-world conditions of production databases, on demand with minimum effort. You can specify data sources like database tables or text files that can be used to supply seed data for test data creation. Sets of generation rules, or actions, are then defined that are to be applied to the source data when the test data is generated. Test data can also be created from scratch using these generation rules. Generation rules are used to specify how the data will be changed in the output. This can serve many purposes including the ability to make sensitive seed data non-sensitive. Generation rules can also be used to specify how output data will be created from scratch to mimic real data.

By simply specifying criteria such as sources, targets, locations, and rules using an intuitive Java-based interface, even novice administrators and developers can populate test environments with reproductions of existing databases and data, sampled and transformed according to detailed criteria, or artificially generate test data from specifications only.

The characteristics of the test data that you specify, using a Java interface, are stored in XML files called data profiles. Data profiles are used to generate test data. They can be used to generate test data at multiple locations and rapidly produce controlled variations on the design of or data in a test database.

Through the use of the DB2 Grouper Component, the critical complexities of reproducing referential integrity are provided with DB2 Test Database Generator as well as an advanced ability to recognize application relationships. This assures that both database referential integrity and application referential integrity will be accurately reflected in the resulting test database without operator input or prior knowledge of database design.

Creating test data is easy and DB2 Test Database Generator offers a wide range of criteria to quickly produce the needed results, including:

Input data sources

  • Tables or views on a local or remote DB2 database where connectivity requirements are met.
  • SQL, delimited text, or fixed text files located via File, FTP, or HTTP location.

Output data targets

Using DB2 Test Database Generator you can specify the characteristics of the test data that you create. Using generation rules you can manipulate existing data or generate data from scratch. For example, you can:

  • Specify a source column that should be used to get the value for a column.
  • Filter data in an existing column.
  • Look up data from a specified location.
  • Generate random data of a specified type and within a specified range.
  • Specify a constant value for a column.
  • Use an expression to determine the values for the column.
  • Specify a pattern to be used to generate the values for a column.
  • Mask sensitive data.
  • Create data of (up to 20) different data types.
  • Use the above actions in combination.

Using Test Database Generator you can generate output in the following formats: DB2 table, DDL, SQL, XML, or CSV.

Usage flow

The DB2 Test Database Generator Java client interface is used to specify all characteristics of the test data that you want to create. These specifications are saved in XML files called data profiles at the DB2 Test Database Generator server. You use the DB2 Test Database Generator Java client to kick off test data generation using the data profile that you created. The DB2 Test Database Generator server validates data profiles to ensure they are complete and of correct syntax, then generates the test data. Any connections to other DB2 databases that are necessary are made during generation by the DB2 Test Database Generator server.

Other key highlights for Test Database Generator include:

Flexible test data creation: DB2 Test Database Generator provides several possible ways to generate test data on demand. You can use existing tables and data to create test data. Existing data can be copied, randomized, or sampled and then transformed or masked using a number of generation rules. You can also create test data without using any existing data as a source. DB2 Test Database Generator provides the utmost flexibility in data structure and content design by providing you with an extremely flexible set of generation rules.

Creates and populates DB2 objects: When creating test data using DB2 Test Database Generator you can choose to have your test data created directly in an existing DB2 database. This saves the step of running the SQL or DDL after test data has been created. After the test data has been created, DB2 Test Database Generator can automatically create and populate DB2 tables. This option is available in most DB2 Test Database Generator configurations.

Flexible input and output options: DB2 Test Database Generator can use the following input formats: DB2 Tables, DB2 Views, SQL, Text (both fixed-width and delimited) files. Also, DB2 Test Database Generator can create the following types of output: DB2 table, SQL file, XML file, DDL, Text file (both fixed-width and delimited) and DB2 Data (test data is automatically added directly to existing DB2 tables).

A background process facility: DB2 Test Database Generator comes complete with a background process facility. It allows you to define the test data that you want to create in advance, then run any network-intensive test data generation at a convenient time by scheduling test data creation using your favorite scheduler.

DB2 Test Database Generator provides a complete test data creation solution that can be used to create test data on demand in a wide variety of environments.

DB2 Performance Expert

DB2 Performance Expert offers a comprehensive view that consolidates, reports, analyzes, and recommends changes on DB2 performance-related information. The tool includes a Performance Warehouse that stores performance data and analysis tools as well as a Buffer Pool Analyzer that collects data and provides reports on related activity. Building on IBM's autonomic computing and on demand expertise, DB2 Performance Expert also provides recommendations for system tuning to gain optimum throughput. And now, Version 2 offers an enhanced architecture, richer graphical support, improved monitoring, and additional administrative and analytical support for the Performance Warehouse. In addition, DB2 Performance Expert:

  • Requires only one DB2 Performance Expert server per DB2 network. By requiring only a single "data collector" server, DB2 Performance Expert V2 provides easier installation and administration for multiple DB2 monitored instances. This provides you with enhanced performance by reducing the footprint and processing on each instance you monitor.
  • Introduces new enhancements to the online monitor including an extended system overview, graphs in the details panels, and improved navigation and filtering on information listed in tables. These enhancements make it simpler for you to do real-time monitoring of DB2 system availability and let you monitor critical counters from a single view.
  • Lets you monitor exceptional conditions so you can anticipate emerging DB2 performance and availability problems early.
  • Adds new enhancements to the Performance Warehouse including "rules-of-thumb" and direct save of database and buffer pool activities (snapshot). By introducing the use of snapshots instead of event monitors, performance will be enhanced and data will be more consistently available. Plus, by taking advantage of recommendations, proactive system performance improvements will also be enhanced.
  • Supports new DB2 V8 counters giving you enhanced insight into DB2 Linux, UNIX, and Windows (LUW) V8 instances.
  • Provides full support for DB2 EEE or DB2 ESE/DPF letting you do highly sophisticated performance monitoring of large enterprise systems.
  • Features a plug-in mechanism for the DB2 Control Center giving you a single entry point for DB2 system administration and performance monitoring.

Additional detail on the enhancements included in Version 2 are as follows:

Architecture: The Performance Expert Server (data collector) is attached to only one DB2 instance so it will have a separate DB2 Performance Monitor database for each instance to be monitored. Both local and remote instances can be monitored. This reduces the overhead at the DB2 instance being monitored and simplifies overall administration.

System overview: The system overview provides a customizable grouping of your monitored systems even if they are located on different platforms (such as grouping your systems in test and production systems). With the Data View Definition and Setup you can define the graphical data views showing important performance counters for the System Overview panel and define the properties (a refresh of the System Overview will be fixed every 20 seconds).

Enhanced graphics: In addition to using the System Overview graphics to visualize performance counters DB2 Performance Expert V2 also offers enhancements to the details panels. In the statistics, application, and thread details panels of Version 2 the graphs illustrate the display counters.

Enhanced navigation: Full navigation is now available between different functions and panels. You can drill down on detail panel lists by using tabs and you can navigate between open panels easily.

Faster access to critical data: You can filter information for data listed in tables (such as databases, tablespaces, bufferpools, tables, and SQL statements). This allows you to show information only for the objects you are interested in (for example, tables having a specific schema). In addition, you can receive data on request for tables and dynamic SQL statements in the statement cache. Since separate snapshot switches are available for tables as well as the different calls needed to get the dynamic SQL statements from the cache, you get better overall performance if this information is only received on request.

Monitoring of exceptional conditions: Supports user-defined thresholds for periodic checking against DB2 snapshot values (periodic exception processing). After an exception occurs, you can drill down into details from the exception log window or send an e-mail to a specific address. Using the Periodic Exception Threshold Editor you can select the performance counter for which you want to define a warning and problem threshold together with filter criteria if applicable and desired. Thresholds can be defined on multiple performance counters and grouped into threshold sets. If a threshold set is activated, the Performance Expert server will check these thresholds periodically.

Event exception displays: You can see all event exceptions that have occurred on the DB2 systems you are logged on to at one point in the "System Overview" panel. Each exception is a link to the "Exception Processing Details" panels where you can view the details about it.

Advanced Performance Warehouse that includes:

  • Rules-of-thumb that provide analysis and let you proactively improve future system behavior. You can use the standard rules-of-thumb or adapt and define your own rules-of-thumb and queries.
  • The DB2 Performance Expert server loads DB2 snapshot data for buffer pool and database activities and configuration data (db and dbm cfg) asynchronously into the DB2 tables giving you better performance without having to start a load process.
  • Support for reports, SQL queries, and rules-of-thumb for EEE/DPF.

Full support for DB2 EEE and ESE/DPF

  • Includes an online monitor that provides information about applications, locking conflicts, statistics, and database configuration per partition, per group, or aggregated over all partitions.
  • Includes exception processing that provide threshold definitions per partition or for aggregated data over all partitions.
  • Includes a bufferpool analyzer that gives you reports on information on single partitions and aggregated over all partitions.
  • Includes a Performance Warehouse where database and bufferpool activity reports contain information about single partitions and information aggregated over all partitions. The SQL Activity reports are available per partition. Rules-of-thumb and queries can be defined for single partitions or for data aggregated over all partitions.

Software maintenance applies: Yes

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Subscription and Technical Support, is now included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support for the products announced in this letter is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity by providing voice and electronic access into the IBM support organizations.

IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option that is available.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect: IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer®. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. By using the news page, it enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM Warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
