IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager suite

The IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager suite is a comprehensive storage resource management (SRM) solution for storage resources across the enterprise. It enables administrators to identify, monitor, control, and predict storage usage. The Tivoli Storage Resource Manager suite provides a set of automated tools that perform many of the operational tasks required in managing the storage infrastructure including capacity, asset, event, and availability management.

Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Express Edition is an SRM solution priced for deployment on single processor clients (for example, desktops, workstations, and notebooks). The Express Edition offers the functionality of Tivoli Storage Resource Manager, with the exception of NAS support and subsystem reporting, to allow you to view, and better manage, storage use.

Main features

Tivoli Storage Resource Manager's main features include enterprise reporting, monitoring and alerts, policy-based management, automated capacity provisioning, database support, and chargeback. New features included in this release are:

Duplicate file reporting — This report shows filename, size and access/modification date of duplicate files in the environment. Duplicate files are be determined by filename and size.

IBM SAN Volume Controller Reporting — Tivoli Storage Resource Manager's general subsystem reporting is extended to provide support for IBM SAN Volume Controller. Reporting:

  • Provides subsystem view of allocated and free space
  • Provides view of storage from host perspective
  • Maintains view of logical and physical drives
  • Maintains historical view of allocated and free capacity
  • Allows grouping of subsystems

Sending SNMP alerts to more than one destination — SNMP alerts can now be sent to two destinations to give more flexibility in event correlation and management.

Enhanced grouping — This enhancement allows an object to be contained within multiple groups (as an example, Server1 can be in Group1 and Group2). Also supported is creating a group that comprises other groups (as an example, Group3 is made up of Group1 and Group2).

Reporting for IBM SAN File System implementation — A report can be produced that shows data from customers' environments that would indicate a good candidate for an IBM San File System implementation. The report will use network-wide statistics to show metrics, including, but not limited to, temp space, duplicate file data, storage utilization by disk and/or file systems to help customers plan for IBM SAN File System implementation. This report helps you create an inventory of assets, suggestions for policies, and plan for implementation. For more information on IBM TotalStorage® SAN File System Storage, refer to Software Announcement 203-275 , dated October 14, 2003.

Agent cluster support — This feature allows for monitoring and reporting for agents that are part of a clustered environment and will support agent failover/failback scenarios. Both active/active and active/passive environments will be supported. A cluster entity will contain the nodes and virtual servers as members. The cluster entity can be used for monitoring and reporting to manage the entire cluster or the individual members of the cluster can also be used. Agent cluster support is for the Microsoft™ Cluster Server (MSCS) environment in this release. This release creates a cluster entity that shows all machines that comprise a cluster, including the cluster alias. Viewing of information can be by cluster alias, as well as cluster members. This feature enables agents scanning on the failed over scenario to perform a scan of a shared file system, if the first agent who is performing a scan fails.

Enhanced volume group support — This enhancement allows reporting of logical volumes belonging to each volume group. In addition, drill down from volume group to logical volumes shows unallocated space in the volume group. Reports are available for AIX® Logical Volume Manager on AIX 5.1 and 5.2 and Veritas Volume Manager on Solaris 8 and 9.

Reporting enhancements for more granular customization — Enhancements allow column selection, row filtering, and wild card selection for both online and batch mode reports. In addition, totals have been added to the System-side Asset report.

IBM Tivoli Storage Area Network Manager

Tivoli Storage Area Network (SAN) Manager provides comprehensive management of the physical and logical configurations for multi-vendor SANs including automatic resource and topology discovery, event monitoring and correlation, alerting, application launch, and SAN error prediction capabilities.

Main features

Tivoli SAN Manager's main features include automatic device discovery, topology rendering, real-time monitoring, alerts, and predictive fault analysis. New features included in this release are:

Zone control — This new feature allows zones to be created and zone sets to be maintained on supported switches that are designed to adhere to the T11 FC-GS3/4 standard (Fibre Channel Generic Service). Brocade proprietary zoning is also supported.

Simplified installation — ID/password reduction has been implemented in order to simplify the install process. The number of ID/passwords required for initial install has been reduced to one each. Additionally, administrators now have the option of using embedded Cloudscape DB (as an alternative to DB2) as the repository database to be used by Tivoli SAN Manager. If the Cloudscape DB2 option is chosen, the separate DB2 install step is no longer necessary, further simplifying the installation process.

Further integration with systems management solutions — This includes Tivoli Enterprise™ Console (TEC) event filtering for the SAN Administrator allowing a simple mechanism to filter events that are issued by Tivoli SAN Manager. SNMP alerts and TEC events are supported. In addition, further integration with Tivoli Data Warehouse enables Tivoli Service Level Advisor to incorporate switch and port availability as part of end-user service level agreements.

Enhanced Cisco MDS support — This feature will extend Tivoli SAN Manager's support for Cisco unique SNMP MIBs to enable out-band discovery of the Cisco fabric. Tivoli SAN Manager also allows viewing of Cisco's Virtual SAN (VSAN) concept by inserting a new level for VSANs in the topology viewing hierarchy.

Novell NetWare System requirements: The requirements for installing and running Tivoli Storage Resource Manager within a Novell NetWare environment are as follows:

Server — not applicable. You cannot install the server component on a Novell NetWare device. Refer to the Windows System requirements, UNIX System requirements, and Linux System requirements sections for information about requirements for installing the server on different operating systems.

Agent — You must install the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Agent on a machine that:

  • Is running Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2, or later, or Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6, or later. To use Tivoli Storage Resource Manager for retrieving storage information from the servers and volumes within NDS trees, you must install the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Agent on a Windows machines where a Novell NetWare client is already located. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager gathers detailed storage information about NetWare servers and volumes using native NetWare calls from these Windows machines.
  • Has an installed NetWare client.
  • Has access to the Novell NetWare servers and volumes within your environment.

Client — not applicable. You cannot install the client component on a Novell NetWare device. Refer to the Windows System requirements, UNIX System requirements, and Linux System requirements sections for information about requirements for installing the client on different operating systems.

Novell NetWare — You must be running V4.0, or later of the Novell operating system. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager is optimized for NetWare V4.0, or later, which contains Novell Directory Services (NDS).

Server — not applicable. You cannot install the server component on a NAS filer. Refer to the Windows System requirements, UNIX System requirements, and Linux System requirements sections for information about requirements for installing the server on different operating systems.

Agent — You must install the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Agents on machines that have access to the NAS filers within your environment that you want to monitor. The agent that is logging into and scanning the NAS filer is not required to be in the same domain as the user or the NAS filer. If you install the agent to a different domain than the NAS filer this agent will scan, the domain of the agent machine must be a "trusted domain" by the domain of the NAS filer.

You do not install agents to the NAS filers themselves.

Client — not applicable. You cannot install the client component to a NAS filer. Refer to the Windows System requirements, UNIX System requirements, and Linux System requirements sections for information about requirements for installing the client on different operating systems.

NAS — The NAS filers within your environment must be visible to the machines where you install the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. NAS filers have to be configured as a member of a Windows domain.

IBM Tivoli SAN Manager Agent configuration restrictions: The Tivoli SAN Manager agent should not be installed on any system that sends SCSI commands over a fibre channel to a removable media drive, except where the environment provides the required support. Removable media drives may not be able to queue commands sent by the Tivoli SAN Manager agent under normal operations and it is likely to result in the application, using the removable media drive, to time out. The work around to this restriction is to install the Tivoli SAN Manager agent on other systems on the SAN. This allows Tivoli SAN Manager to provide management function for these systems, except to discover and display the LUNs available to them. Environments where this restriction does not apply include systems with AIX 5.1, AIX 5.2, or IBM tape devices, as listed below. For an updated list of environments where this restriction does not apply, go to:

Enterprise 3494 Tape Libraries with:

  • 3590-E1A Fibre Channel Drives
  • 3590-H1A Fibre Channel Drives

Standalone 3590 Drives:

  • 3590-E11 Fibre Channel Drive
  • 3590-H11 Fibre Channel Drive

The fibre channel feature number is 3510 for field install or 9510 for plant install. These drives must be at a minimum firmware level of D01E_350. If an upgrade is required, it is recommended that drives are upgraded to the current level. Contact your IBM representative for ordering information.

Ultrium 3584 UltraScalable Tape Libraries

  • LTO Ultrium Fibre Channel Drive Sled (#1456)
  • LTO Ultrium Fibre Channel Drive (#1466)

These drives must be at a minimum firmware level of 25D4. For 3584 Libraries containing these drives, it is highly recommended that they are upgraded to the current firmware level. This firmware can be downloaded from:

Performance considerations: The Tivoli Storage Resource Manager and Tivoli SAN Manager products' performance will vary depending upon a customer's particular configuration, the client/server options, and customization.

Planning information

Installability

Tivoli Storage Resource Manager

For the AIX, Sun Solaris, Linux x86, Windows 2000, and HP-UX servers, the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager database is automatically upgraded during the installation of the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager V1.3 server. After this database upgrade, the user can no longer run a previous version of the servers with the database.

As a normal precaution, it is recommended that a full database backup be performed before installing the V1.3 code, as well as after completing the installation.

As part of a migration plan from Tivoli Storage Resource Manager V1.2 to Tivoli Storage Resource Manager V1.3, Tivoli Storage Resource Manager clients and servers may be upgraded at different times. The Tivoli Storage Resource Manager server V1.3 does not support Tivoli Storage Resource Manager V1.1 clients. Users may use the new "Scheduled Agent Upgrade" feature to plan and schedule the upgrade of V1.2 clients to V1.3.

Additional migration information:

  • The following Tivoli Storage Resource Manager server operating systems, supported in V1.2, are not supported in V1.3:
    • AIX V4.3.3
    • Red Hat Linux 6.2, 7.2 and 7.3
  • The following Tivoli Storage Resource Manager agent operating systems, supported in V1.2, are not supported in V1.3:
    • AIX V4.3.3
    • Red Hat Linux 6.2, 7.2 and 7.3

Tivoli SAN Manager

For the AIX and Windows managers, the Tivoli SAN Manager V1.2 DB2 database is automatically upgraded during the installation of the Tivoli SAN Manager V1.3. This upgrade is done during the manager installation. After this database upgrade, the user can no longer run a previous version of the managers or remote consoles with the database.

For customers upgrading from Tivoli SAN Manager V1.2 to V1.3, customer-configured data and setup information is preserved.

As a normal precaution, it is recommended that a full database backup be performed before installing the V1.3 code, as well as after completing the installation.

Upgrade from Tivoli SAN Manager V1.1 is not supported.

Tivoli SAN Manager V1.3 supports both DB2 and Cloudscape databases. Migration from Tivoli SAN Manager V1.2 to V1.3 is not supported for the Cloudscape database. If a customer wants to use the Cloudscape database for Tivoli SAN Manager V1.3, customers with Tivoli SAN Manager V1.2 will need to uninstall V1.2 prior to installing V1.3. No customer data will be preserved.

Tivoli SAN Manager V1.3 requires that the manager and remote console be at the same level. The Tivoli SAN Manager V1.3 manager requires the remote console to also be upgraded to V1.3. Tivoli SAN Manager V1.3 remote console will not function with a Tivoli SAN Manager V1.2 or V1.1 manager. In addition, Tivoli SAN Manager V1.3 manager will not function with Tivoli SAN V1.2 or V1.1 remote console.

As part of a migration plan from Tivoli SAN Manager V1.2 to Tivoli SAN Manager V1.3, Tivoli SAN Manager agents may be upgraded at different times. Tivoli SAN Manager V1.3 supports Tivoli SAN Manager V1.1 and V1.2 agents.

Additional migration information:

  • The following Tivoli SAN Manager agent operating systems, supported in V1.1, are not supported in V1.2 and V1.3:
    • AIX 4.3.3 (Note: Since Tivoli SAN Manager V1.3 will support V1.1 agents, customers who need to manage AIX 4.3.3 can use Tivoli SAN Manager V1.3 agent.)

Tivoli Environment-Managed Licensing Model

The unique element of this model, introduced in 2000, is that pricing and licensing is based on what is managed (for example, clients, servers, and network devices), not on how the customer chooses to implement the technical facets of a Tivoli solution (for example, management servers, gateways, and endpoints).

Most IBM Tivoli products are priced on the Environment-Managed Licensing Model. Management capability for a certain environment is acquired for each Tivoli discipline required. The customer is free to implement any of the Tivoli Enterprise™ software components (Tivoli Management Region servers, gateways, or endpoints) in any quantity to best manage within the environment for which the discipline was acquired, without cost complications. As architecture changes, the customer's implementation can be altered, as needed, without affecting the licensing for the products acquired. This represents a significant change from the typical systems management licensing models that are based on purchasing the specific components and licensing them to specific systems.

A server is defined by its use in the environment, not by its role in a Tivoli solution. All servers in an environment are priced as servers, offering the flexibility to serve Tivoli applications from any system in the enterprise without any change in cost. Servers are licensed and priced corresponding to each installed processor to better correlate cost to value while offering a simple, scalable solution. In addition to traditional clients, other devices can be managed in a server/device model, including:

  • Personal digital assistants (PDAs)
  • Point-of-sale terminals (tills and cash registers)
  • Automated teller machines (ATMs)
  • Appliances

In the Environment-Managed Model, only the systems or devices managed require licensing.

The server definition has been updated since Value-Based Pricing was introduced in February 2000, to recognize the convergence of RISC/UNIX and Microsoft Windows/Intel technologies, to simplify the customer's licensing requirements, and to provide a smoother, more scalable model. Servers are licensed and priced on a per-installed-processor basis. The pricing and licensing does not differentiate between distributed server platforms or operating systems. It is consistent for all distributed servers. For some products, this platform neutrality extends to zSeries® and other host servers as well.

For servers capable of physical partitioning, the licensing is based on the number of processors in the partition for the application managed. Note that this applies only to fixed partitions, not variable workload. This partitioning technique is the approach used with systems that have either multiple cards or multiple frames, each of which can be configured independently. For systems with virtual or logical partitions, licensing is required for all processors in the server. For clustered environments, the licensing is determined by the cumulative number of installed processors in each server in the cluster.

Terminology definitions

Application server

An application server is a computer system that provides services to one or more clients, servers, or other devices over a network and is defined by its use within the Tivoli application.

Client

A client is a computer system or process that requests a service of another computer system typically referred to as a server. Multiple clients may share access to a common server. A client has some processing capability or is programmable to allow a user to work. Examples include notebook computers, desktop computers, deskside computers, and technical workstations. The client definition applies to Tivoli products that manage non-client/non-server devices (such as, appliances, networking devices, PDAs, or similar devices), the client definition applies to those devices also.

Cluster

A group of distributed servers operated as a single image, generally running serially. Licensing is required for the cumulative number of processors installed in the cluster of servers. For example, a cluster with 4 servers, each with 4 processors installed, would require licensing for 16 processors.

Device

A device is any non-client, non-server part of a network managed by a Tivoli application including, but not limited to, PDAs and other pervasive devices.

Client server

A client server is any client device or computer system that requests a service of another computer system typically referred to as a server. Multiple client devices may share access to a common server. A client device has some processing capability or is programmable to allow a user to do work. Examples include, but are not limited to, notebook computers, desktop computers, deskside computers, technical workstations, appliances, PDAs, ATMs, point-of-sale terminals (POSs, tills, and cash registers), and kiosks.

Environment-Managed Licensing Model

The Environment-Managed Licensing Model is used to describe the Tivoli pricing offering that separates licensing from architecture. In the Environment-Managed Model, the price is based on what is managed rather than on the more traditional approach of pricing based on the number and type of product component. A server is defined by its use in the customer's environment, not by its use within a Tivoli application. For example, all servers (including, but not limited to, file servers, print servers, and application servers) monitored with IBM Tivoli Monitoring require processor licensing sufficient for those servers. Some products, such as IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager, manage not only servers, but also clients and other devices. Each device or class of device requires licensing.

Network node

Network nodes include routers, switches, hubs, and bridges that contain a network management agent. In the Internet Protocol (IP), the managed node usually contains a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent. A single node may contain any number of interfaces or ports.

Physical partitions

For servers capable of physical partitioning, the licensing is based on the number of processors in the partition for the application being managed. Note that this only applies to fixed partitions, not variable workload.

Port

A port is the physical connection between a device and the network. Network nodes such as routers and switches typically have many ports. Workstations and servers typically have only a single port.

Processor

A processor is a functional unit in a computer that interprets and executes instructions. A processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and an arithmetic and logic unit. For IBM Tivoli products, only processors installed in servers require licensing. Refer to each product for details.

Registered user

A registered user is anyone who is authorized to access a Tivoli program.

Server

A server is a computer system that provides services to one or more clients or other devices over a network. Examples include file servers, print servers, mail servers, database servers, application servers, and Web servers.

A server is defined by its use in the customer's environment, not by its use within a Tivoli application. Server licensing is based on the number of processors installed.

For distributed servers in a clustered environment, licensing is required for the cumulative number of processors installed in the servers in the cluster.

Refer to the License Information documents for product-specific extensions to this basic definition. These documents are packaged with all IBM Tivoli products and are also available from:

Standby or backup systems

For programs running or resident on backup machines, IBM defines three types of situations: cold, warm, and hot. In the cold and warm situations, a separate license for the backup copy is normally not required and typically no additional charge applies. In a hot backup situation, the customer needs to acquire another license or authorizations sufficient for that server. All programs running in backup mode must be under the customer's control, even if they are running at another enterprise's location.

As a practice, the following are definitions and allowable actions concerning the copy of the program used for backup purposes.

Cold

A copy of the program may be stored for backup purposes on a machine as long as the program has not been started. Licensing is not required for this system.

Warm

A copy of the program may reside for backup purposes on a machine and is started, but is idling, and is not doing any work of any kind. Licensing is not required for this system.

Hot

A copy of the program may reside for backup purposes on a machine. It is started, and is running in production mode. This program must be ordered, and licensing is required for this system.

Running includes, for example, production, development, program maintenance, and testing. It also could include other activities such as mirroring of transactions, updating files, synchronizing programs, data, or other resources (for example, active linking with another machine, program, database, or other resource) or any activity or configurations that would allow an active hot switch or other synchronized switch-over between programs, databases, or other resources to occur.

Pricing model examples

The general environment for the examples: The following customer network applies to all of the examples to enable the reader to see where products tend to manage something less than the entire environment.

Customer ABC has an environment with 100 distributed servers, as follows:

  • 20 uniprocessors
  • 65 2-way processors
  • 12 4-way processors
  • One 8-way processor
  • One 14-way processor
  • One 24-way processor

The environment also includes 10 total clients.

IBM Tivoli SAN Manager examples

Scenario 1:

Customer ABC wants to perform basic management for systems on their SAN. Three of the 4-way servers, the 14-way server, and 1 of the client systems (a single user technical workstation) reside on the SAN.

The customer will require the following licensing:

IBM Tivoli SAN Manager

                           Quantity in Total
Systems customer processors
managed environment required

4-way 3 12
14-way 1 14
                           Total Processors 26

                           Quantity in Total
Systems customer clients
managed environment required

Clients 1 1
                           Total Clients 1

Scenario 2:

Customer ABC adds systems to their SAN, and decides they want to perform resource management and availability management for all systems on their SAN. Now, six of the 4-way servers, the 14-way server, and two of the client systems (that is, technical workstations, desktops, and so forth) reside on the SAN, with the remaining systems as LAN-based servers.

In addition, ABC wants to take advantage of the application specific features required to more deeply understand storage resource utilization for 10 2-way database servers (5 SQL servers and 5 Oracle servers), and utilize the chargeback capability on those same database servers.

The customer will require the following:

IBM Tivoli SAN Manager

                           Quantity in Total
Systems customer processors

Software Maintenance

Software Maintenance is included with each product authorization acquired. Software Maintenance provides an easy and effective way by which you have access, during the coverage period, to eligible new versions and releases and to remote technical support for your covered products.

The technical support included in Software Maintenance provides remote support during normal business hours in your country or location as well as access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for mission-critical (Severity 1) problems.

With Software Maintenance, you receive the following technical support benefits:

  • Telephone access and/or electronic access via the Web to an IBM Customer Support Center.
  • Support for routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related problems.
  • Support during normal country business hours, namely prime shift hours, Monday through Friday, excluding national or statutory holidays.
  • Support for mission-critical (Severity 1) problems during non-prime shift hours, namely all hours outside normal country business hours including national and/or statutory holidays.
  • Two-hour response time objective during prime shift for voice and electronic submission. The response objective for critical/emergency problems during offshift is also two hours.
  • Access to hints, tips, and frequently asked questions.
  • Access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Open Authorized Technical Caller list to submit problems to IBM Support Centers on your behalf. Open to any number of technical specialists within your IS organization. Each caller must be registered through the IBM problem submission Web site in order to submit problems. Problem submission is handled by the Site Technical Contact as listed on the Passport Advantage enrollment form.
  • eCare for Software is an initiative designed to enhance your electronic support experience by providing the following advantages:
    • Single view of IBM distributed software that includes easy/integrated access to the following information and functions:
      • Marketing
      • Technical
      • Developer
      • Business Partner
      • IBM Services
      • Downloads

    • Comprehensive electronic (via the Web) self-help capabilities available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
    • Advanced search capabilities.
    • A single interface to the IBM problem submission/management system for IBM distributed software.

Software Maintenance renewals offer you favorable pricing to continue your coverage without interruption. Passport Advantage allows you to have a common anniversary date for Software Maintenance renewals, which can simplify management and budgeting for eligible new versions and releases (and related technical support) for your covered products. The anniversary date, established at the start of your Passport Advantage Agreement, will remain unchanged while your Passport Advantage Agreement remains in effect. New software purchases will initially include 12 full months of maintenance coverage. Maintenance in the second year (the first year of renewal) can be prorated to be coterminous with your common anniversary date. Thereafter, all Software Maintenance will renew at the common anniversary date and include twelve full months of maintenance.

Refer to the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement and to the IBM Software Maintenance Handbook for specific terms relating to, and a more complete description of, technical support provided through Software Maintenance.
