Description

As organizations strive to make their operations more cost-effective and efficient in an increasingly on demand environment, content management technology is key to gaining a competitive edge, faster response to customers and suppliers, and increased bottom line. Content management technology can help organizations solve a critical problem by managing and integrating all forms of information, including scanned images, office documents, and faxes.

Content management is the next wave of data management, and the DB2 Content Manager portfolio of products helps customers worldwide to digitize and manage all forms of information in an effort to respond faster to market demands, tap into new markets, and ultimately increase profits.

DB2 Content Manager Express Edition V8.2 delivers unparalleled openness, robustness, and function for managing the information assets of today's small and medium enterprises. Along with transaction, security, process integration, and simplified installation, it provides a single, open, comprehensive, and consistent framework for managing, sharing, reusing, and storing many types of digitized content, including document images and electronic office documents.

DB2 Content Manager Express Edition delivers document management, production imaging, and document workflow in one package. Features include:

  • Storage and management of content in various formats (text, image, fax and others).
  • Incorporating tools and solutions (scanning subsystems from IBM Business Partners) to capture information into Content Manager.
  • Secure delivery of any type of object with predefined privileges, governing the kinds of activities that can be executed against a specific object (Update, Print, Annotate, and so forth).
  • Comprehensive API set which fully exploits the Content Manager data model and provides integration points for line-of-business applications.
  • Robust foldering support provides folders and nested subfolders to define logical relationship between content objects.
  • Version control manages multiple versions of documents and objects, including multiple versions of specific document annotations.
  • ODMA support allows easy document access from ODMA V2.0-compliant Windows desktop applications such as Microsoft™ Word.
  • Multivalue attributes allows content types to be identified by multiple authors or composers.
  • Index Class subsets let system administrators protect sensitive information by restricting views to specific subsets.
  • Content organization (filing) can be changed without rescanning.
  • Note logs at both a folder and document level lets users add information as needed.
  • Logs any activity against a specific document (create, view, update, and delete).
  • Powerful search capabilities provide Metadata searching (documents or folders) and full-text search for text-based document (Word, PDF, or Excel) and full-text search with attribute data or all of the above combined.
  • Users can route documents or folders from node to node based on parameter values or predefined serial routes and processes.
  • Suspend and resume feature lets you suspend a document for a specific time period. You can also suspend a folder to await for the arrival of other documents before work can proceed by defining a collection node.
  • Out-of-the-box Content Manager clients with scanning (including Twain scanner support in Windows Client) and hooks to capture subsystems.
  • Easy, quick installation of Content Manager Express and associated prerequisites.

The installation process is completely new for DB2 Content Manager Express. The installation program silently installs DB2 Universal Database® (UDB) Express and WebSphere® Application Server Express (shipped with DB2 Content Manager Express package), with a simplified and quick installation process that requires minimal user interaction. DB2 Net Search Extender, included in the DB2 Content Manager Express package, may be added to the installation to provide full-text indexing and search.

The DB2 Content Manager Express Edition Library Server, Resource Manager, eClient Application Server and System Administration client are installed on the same machine, along with all prerequisite software components.

Product positioning

DB2 Content Manager Express stores content on disk and is licensed to run on single-server Windows platforms, with up to two processors.

  • Multiple servers
  • Servers with more than two processors
  • UNIX®, AIX®, or Solaris operating systems

It includes hierarchical storage management via Tivoli® Storage Manager, so content can be stored on disk or less expensive media such as tape or optical drives. For additional information, refer to Software Announcement 203-078 , dated March 25, 2003.

DB2 Content Manager for Multiplatforms, V8.2 should be considered by organizations that need to support a large number of concurrent users and require enterprise function for hierarchical storage management, distributed server support, replication, federated services, and advanced workflow support. DB2 Content Manager Express Edition has the following charge structure:

  • Server install
  • Concurrent user

The DB2 Content Manager Express Edition Library Server, Resource Manager, eClient Application Server and System Administration client are installed on the same machine, along with all prerequisite software components.

Server

Your license to the program entitles you to install one instance of DB2 Content Manager Express Edition V8.2 on a single server, with no more than two processors. If you wish to install additional program server instances on additional physical servers, you must acquire additional Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs). If you wish to install additional program server instances on a server with more than two processors, then you must acquire a license for DB2 Content Manager V8.

Concurrent user

You must acquire an authorization for each concurrent user. The number of concurrent users may not exceed the number authorized by the applicable concurrent PoEs. Each Content Manager Express concurrent user license authorizes one individual user to connect to one Content Manager Express program server.

The number of concurrent users is defined as the maximum or peak number of users connected to the program servers at one time. Each user connection is considered to be active, and therefore concurrent, for 30 minutes after logon or any transaction against the server. If the user invokes any transaction activity within a 30-minute interval, they will continue to be considered an active concurrent user. If the connected user remains inactive for a period of greater than 30 minutes, they will no longer be considered an active concurrent user, until they re-establish an active connection by invoking a transaction against the server.

A concurrent user is defined as a user either within or outside the customer's enterprise who is entitled to establish one or more connections to any authorized Content Manager Express program server directly or through an application server. Each user making a connection to a Content Manager Express program server must have a separate PoE.

Limited Use DB2 UDB Express Edition V8.1 and DB2 Net Search Extender V8.1

The program includes portions of DB2 UDB Express Edition V8.1 and DB2 Net Search Extender V8.1. You are authorized to install and use one copy of these components only in association with your licensed use of DB2 Content Manager Express Edition 8.2 for the storage and management of data used and generated by the program, and not for other data management purposes. For example, this license does not include inbound connections to the database from other applications for queries or report generation. You are authorized to install and use these components only with and on the same workstation as the program and can be used with the following restrictions: Your use of the DB2 components is subject to the terms and conditions of the license agreement which accompany the components except as limited in this license. The DB2 components may not be used for any other purpose. Contact your DB2 reseller if your needs exceed this license agreement, to obtain a full DB2 UDB program.

Limited Use WebSphere Application Server — Express V5.0 (WAS)

The program includes a copy of WAS. You are authorized to install and use one copy of these components only in association with your licensed use of DB2 Content Manager Express Edition 8.2. Your use of the WAS components is limited to use in support of your licensed use of the program, and is subject to the terms and conditions of the license agreement (except as limited in this paragraph) which accompanies WAS. The WAS components may not be used for any other purpose.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer®. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. Using the news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic customer-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
