What's new in V5.2

  • Increased robot capability to run generic Windows™ or Web-based transactions using the included IBM Rational® Robot
  • New visualization capabilities to dynamically discover and display transaction path topologies and associated performance delays by infrastructure component
  • Improved problem isolation through just-in-time instrumentation of J2EE environments, requiring no modification to source code
  • Simplified infrastructure which can help to shorten time to value and lower total cost of ownership
  • Improved linkages to other Tivoli products

Description

IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.2 is designed to help meet the needs of IT organizations in managing overall transaction performance.

The key to successful performance monitoring is to have a tool that can identify any problem before end-users' experience degraded service levels. IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance allows you to record typical business transactions, and then play them back with simulated users or robots to drive real transactions through an environment on a periodic basis. These transactions are then measured for overall performance and availability. Additionally, IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.2 monitors real user performance and availability.

The next step is to verify that the data from these real and robotic end-user's transactions are captured for near-term and historical reporting purposes. Many customers implement Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and the data from these transactions can be used to monitor compliance with those SLAs. By integrating IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance, Tivoli Data Warehouse, and Tivoli Service Level Advisor, a comprehensive solution for monitoring and tracking SLAs can be achieved.

After a solution is in place to determine if performance problems exist, then a solution is needed to determine where the problems are being created. This is where the instrumentation and visualization capabilities are used. IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance relies on the Open Group standard for application instrumentation, the Application Response Measurement, or ARM API. In addition to working with instrumentation that is included natively in leading middleware and applications (for example, WebSphere® Application Server V5.0), IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance dynamically injects instrumentation into leading e-business applications. This approach eliminates the need for application development teams to insert ARM API calls into source code and allows dynamic discovery of transaction topologies.

Once the location of a performance problem is identified, then IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance works with other monitoring tools to help identify the root cause of that performance problem. If a user has the IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM) solutions in place, a launch in context feature can be enabled to allow users to open up the ITM Web health console in the context of the specific resource that is causing the delay.

Several new capabilities are available in V5.2, including:

  • Increased robot capability to run generic Windows or Web-based transactions using IBM Rational Robot that is included under a special limited license with the software. By using Rational Robot as part of IBM Tivoli Transaction Performance, customers can record and play back transactions for many different applications in their environment (for example, Windows-based applications, Java™ applets, and complex Web applications that can be run in a Windows environment). This integration also allows customers that already use Rational products in their development environments to reuse their existing Robot scripts in their operations environment.
  • New visualization capabilities to dynamically discover and display transaction path topologies and associated performance delays by infrastructure component. This can allow operators to quickly see which infrastructure component, for example servlet, JSP, or EJB is the source of a delay in a transaction. The visual topology can also contribute to understanding the overall flow of transactions.
  • Improved problem isolation capability through just-in-time instrumentation of J2EE environments, requiring no modification to source code. By providing a tool to "inject" ARM instrumentation into J2EE applications as the Java classes are loaded, this product can reduce the effort needed to get valuable instrumentation-based performance information.
  • Simplified infrastructure which can help to shorten time to value and lower total cost of ownership. One goal of V5.2 is to reduce the number of databases that are needed, and combine several of the functions in previous versions into a single architecture.
  • Additional linkages to other Tivoli products. Although Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance can be used in isolation, integration with other Tivoli products can help deliver enhanced value.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance is capable, as of November 7, 2003, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Product positioning

IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance is one of Tivoli's suite of monitoring products. It can launch in-context IBM Tivoli Monitoring in order to drill down into the resource that is causing a transaction delay, but does not require IBM Tivoli Monitoring. A separate license for IBM Tivoli Monitoring is required.

If response time at the end-user level is degraded, IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance can raise a Tivoli Enterprise™ Console event, and notify Tivoli Business Systems Manager. It also provides a very important data feed to IBM Tivoli Service Level Advisor, providing both availability and response time information.

IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance can enable you to isolate a performance problem and can then launch the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Web Health Console to help isolate its cause, and then repair it. The operator may then choose to add the problem signature to an existing IBM Tivoli Monitoring Resource Model, or to create a new one, with automatic repair, so that if the end-user response time problem should recur, it may be automatically repaired before it negatively impacts end-users' experience.

Passport Advantage allows you to have a common anniversary date for Software Maintenance renewals, which can simplify management and budgeting for eligible new versions and releases (and for related technical support) for your covered products. The anniversary date, established at the start of your Passport Advantage Agreement, recurs on an annual basis while your Passport Advantage Agreement remains in effect. However, regardless of when Software Maintenance is acquired, the coverage period for Software Maintenance is always up to the anniversary date specified in the acquisition.

Refer to the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement and to the IBM Software Maintenance Handbook for specific terms relating to, and a more complete description of, technical support provided through Software Maintenance.

The quantity to be specified for the Passport Advantage part numbers in the following table is per processor. To order for Passport Advantage, specify the desired part number and quantity.
