Description

The IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 6.5 family of products focuses on the theme of maximizing collaboration and user productivity, while lowering total cost of ownership. As they have since their inception, Lotus Notes and Domino continue to offer high performance with reliability, reusability, security, and flexibility, for companies of all sizes and across all industries. With each release update, Lotus continues to meet your needs to help you maintain a competitive advantage.

IBM Lotus Notes 6.5: Reducing TCO with enhanced user productivity

  • Lotus Instant Messaging integration — Instant messaging functionality has been incorporated into Notes 6.5, providing presence awareness and the ability for users to open a chat session with other Lotus Instant Messaging (Sametime®) users without separately launching the Lotus Instant Messaging application. Users can increase productivity through the ability to instantly collaborate with colleagues, while remaining within the context of a specific task.
  • Lotus Workplace for Notes — New in Notes 6.5, the Welcome page can be presented as a Workplace — offering streamlined access to all of your business-critical information sources. Workplace for Notes offers a single point of integration for the tools users work with, the tasks users work on, as well as the people users collaborate with. End users benefit from an innovative collaborative workplace, which provides quick and easy access to multiple information sources.
  • Follow-up flags — Users can mark entries in their mail with a follow-up flag. The follow-up flag allows users to indicate to themselves that there is further action to be taken, helping to maximize responsiveness to incoming requests.
  • Replied to and/or forwarded indicators — This provides a way for users to easily determine whether they have responded to or forwarded a particular e-mail. Icon indicators are provided at the view level, and an iconic indicator in the note header of an e-mail shows that a reply or forward has already occurred. This helps users to maximize responsiveness to e-mail and to more efficiently manage the information and tasks in their inbox.
  • Block sender mail rule — This allows users to add a specified sender to a block sender list so that future messages from that address are blocked from displaying in the inbox view. Future mail from this sender will be automatically moved to the Junk Mail view. Users can potentially benefit from less junk mail in their inbox, helping them to more quickly navigate to the important messages.
  • QuickRules — The ability to create QuickRules is now provided on the Tools drop down menu. This allows users to quickly and easily create a rule, based on a specific e-mail, that can help them manage the flow of information in their inbox. A dialogue box will prompt users for the type of rule they would like to create (delete, change priority, move to a folder). Users can maximize their productivity by freeing up time to focus on more important tasks.
  • Unread e-mail view — Users can now easily toggle on/off between showing only unread mail in the inbox view, with a single click on the action bar. This can help users to better focus on the mail they have yet to act upon.
  • Drag and drop e-mail to Calendar or To Do bookmark to create a copy-into effect — Users now can drag an e-mail from a mail view to the Calendar or To Do bookmark and create a new calendar entry or to do — helping to save time by accelerating the process of creating a new calendar entry or to do. The calendar entry or to do is automatically populated with the relevant information from the e-mail and the user can also add other details as required for the entry.
  • Print e-mails without distribution list — Users can specify their preference whether or not to include the "to:" and "cc:" field contents when printing a memo or a calendar entry, helping to save space on printed materials when there is a lengthy distribution list.
  • Set Notes as default e-mail client — Users can now set Lotus Notes as their default mail client. When they click a "mailto:" link on a Web page, a new message window will automatically open in Notes, allowing users to start working faster.
  • Export views to Comma Separated Views (CSV) — Users can now easily export data from a view in Notes to a spreadsheet, helping to increase productivity and offering flexibility in how users choose to present information. Users now have the option to export Notes view data in CSV format, resulting in documents from the Notes view appearing as individual records in the CSV file.

IBM Lotus Domino Web Access 6.5: Advanced functionality and enhanced user interface

  • Lotus Instant Messaging integration — Instant messaging functionality has been incorporated into Domino Web Access. Users benefit from presence awareness and the ability to open a chat session with other Lotus Instant Messaging (Sametime) users without separately launching the Lotus Instant Messaging application. The result is increased productivity as users can instantly collaborate with colleagues while remaining within the context of a specific task.
  • Follow-up flags — Users can mark entries in their mail with a follow-up flag. The follow-up flag allows users to indicate to themselves that there is further action to be taken, helping to maximize responsiveness to incoming requests.
  • Linux client support delivered via Mozilla browser — Domino Web Access 6.5 extends messaging and collaboration to Linux clients with support for the Mozilla browser, making it the first-ever fully supported client-to-server collaboration solution for Linux. Domino Web Access is now an ideal solution to realize the potential cost savings of deploying Linux at both the server and the client ends. Because it is a browser-based messaging solution, Domino Web Access can be deployed with little or no client-side deployment cost — a huge potential savings for any organization looking to extend messaging and collaboration to additional users.
  • Block sender mail rule — This allows Domino Web Access users to add a specified sender to a block sender list so that future messages from that address are blocked from displaying in the inbox view. Future mail from this sender will be automatically moved to the Junk Mail view. Users can potentially benefit from less junk mail in their inbox, helping to quickly navigate to the important messages.
  • Copy into — Domino Web Access users now have the ability to copy the body of a received message into a new to do item or calendar entry with a single click, saving time and allowing users to more efficiently manage daily tasks.
  • Send-and-file — Similar to the Notes client functionality, the Domino Web Access user can now "send and file" new messages in a single step. Clicking the "send and file" button sends the document and files it in a folder all in one step, saving time and helping users efficiently manage their inbox and folders.
  • Print multiple documents from the view — Domino Web Access users now have the ability to select and print multiple documents in a view. Users are presented with three options to help them easily print in their preferred format.
  • Multiple time zone support — Domino Web Access now provides support for multiple time zones in calendar entries and in the calendar view, allowing users to easily understand calendar commitments across time zones.
  • To-do enhancements — Users have the ability to create to-do items that can be assigned to another individual or group.
  • Send, sign, and verify encrypted mail messages — Domino Web Access builds upon its state-of-the-art, security-rich features with the addition of new delivery options for sending secure mail. Users can now send encrypted and signed messages as well as verify digital signatures — using the same security delivered in Notes. Users can benefit from these additional security features directly from the Domino Web Access user interface.
  • Archive locally with off-line support — In Domino Web Access 6.5, Win32 users have the ability to create and store an archive locally, extending off-line support so users can maximize productivity while off-line. Users can easily access their local or server-based archive from a link in the Domino Web Access user interface.
  • Webmail redirect — Domino Web Access Webmail redirect allows users to access their mail file without needing to know the name of their mail file or the name of their mail server. The Webmail redirect is a database that resides on the server and processes URLs. Using Domino authentication methods, Domino Web Access will redirect a user's browser to their mail file based on their user name and password. Users need only to go to a simple primary URL (name of the Domino Web Access redirect server) and they will be transported to their mail file.
  • Ability to easily customize the design template — Domino Web Access 6.5 provides the mechanism for customers to easily modify or customize design templates to better fit their business needs. Domino developers can customize the design of select forms of the iNotes™ template using Lotus Domino Designer®. Modifications can include: adding action buttons to views or dialog boxes, providing additional choices for the Welcome Page, and replacing the Domino Web Access logo with a corporate logo.
  • Server-side caching of generated and compressed content — Domino Web Access now caches certain static data, such as forms, so the mail client only needs to bring down the data once — instead of requesting the data from the server each time — resulting in improved scalability and performance.
  • Gzip compression — Gzip compression of Domino Web Access content is done to reduce network bandwidth consumption and improve client performance on slow networks (modems). This can help improve client-side performance, especially in regions where bandwidth is at a premium.

IBM Lotus Domino 6.5: Lower your total cost of ownership and make your users more productive, with secure collaboration for your employees, customers, suppliers, and partners

What is new in IBM Lotus Domino 6.5

  • New platform support: Linux on zSeries® (Linux for S/390) and Microsoft™ Windows™ 2003 Server.
  • Database unread marks can now replicate between databases on clustered servers or on all servers where the database resides.
  • You can rename a resource by changing its name, its site, and, if the resource is of type "Other," its category.
  • New administration enhancements:
    • A unified interface for Fault Recovery and Cleanup Scripts. Now administrators can enable or disable NSD to collect diagnostic data, enable or disable server restarts, and specify clean-up scripts, all from within the Domino Server document.
    • Semaphore management now adds timestamps in SEMDEBUG.TXT, to better correlate the timeouts to what is occurring in the server log.
  • Improved serviceability to enable more rapid diagnosing and resolving of customer issues:
    • The Automatic Diagnostic Collection (ADC) tool collects diagnostic data after server and client crashes and sends the collected data to a mail-in database when the server or client restarts. You can then use the collected data to determine the cause of the crash.
    • Memcheck is now enhanced by locking memory pools when executed, so there are no extraneous errors reported when it does its memory validation.
    • Storing 10 last (number controlled by notes.ini) versions of server documents in XML format, in the IBM_TECHNICAL_SUPPORT directory, so that admins can track changes.
  • Domino for z/OS® customers can now exploit hardware cryptography for SSL, leading to lower CPU utilization.
  • Domino Statistics and Monitoring now includes platform statistics for Domino on Linux.
  • Server.Load now includes workloads for Domino Web Access, IMAP, and R6Mail.
  • Single sign-on (SSO) enhancements:
    • The Domino 6.5 Web Server caches Internet password changes for SSO users.
    • In addition to the SSO fixed expiration timeout, you can configure an SSO idle timeout to prompt users again to enter their password.

Lotus Domino Designer 6.5: Rapidly create multiplatform applications to automate business processes and increase workflow efficiency

  • Adding instant messaging to an application — You can integrate online awareness in forms or views with the flip of a switch — no programming is required. You can enable a Names field so that the field displays the online status of Lotus Instant Messaging users listed in the field. A Notes user viewing the document can click the name of an active user and initiate a chat. You can also enable a column in a view so that the names of Lotus Instant Messaging users listed in the column display their online status and are available to the user for chats.
  • Export views to an ASCII file with comma separated values (CSV) — The CSV format is an ASCII text file with one record per line whose fields are separated by commas.
  • New Java™/CORBA classes — All the new classes introduced in Domino 6 are now available in Java with Domino 6.5. You can easily and securely connect to computing systems, lower computing costs, and speed software development with Java technology. Some of the new classes are DXLExporter, DXLImporter, RichTextNavigator, RichTextSection, RichTextTable, and more.
  • Lotus Domino Toolkit for WebSphere Studio 1.1 — We have exposed more Lotus Domino custom JavaServer Pages (JSP) tags. You can develop JSP using WebSphere Studio more quickly with the help of the Lotus Domino Toolkit for WebSphere Studio. You simply drag and drop Domino forms, views, and agents onto a JSP you created in WebSphere Studio. These JSPs can then be integrated into portlets hosted on WebSphere Portal.
  • Updated open database connectivity (ODBC) drivers — The Lotus Connector for ODBC is available with the following drivers:
    • DataDirect Release 4.2 SP3 Lotus-branded driver for native Lotus Connector for ODBC
    • DataDirect 4.2 Sybase Wire Protocol
    • DataDirect 4.2 Oracle Wire Protocol
  • The default driver is the native ODBC (the first item above) driver. You can optionally use the Sybase Wire Protocol or Oracle Wire Protocol by using the appropriate data source name (DSN) for Sybase or Oracle.

Lotus Enterprise Integrator (LEI) 6.5: Provides enterprise-strength real-time data access, data transfer, and synchronization between Domino and external systems

  • Support for installation to multiple Domino partitions — Using Domino server partitioning, you can run multiple instances of the Domino server on a single computer. By doing so, you reduce hardware expenses and minimize the number of computers to administer because, instead of purchasing multiple small computers to run Domino servers that might not take advantage of the resources available to them, you can purchase a single, more powerful computer and run multiple instances of the Domino server on that single machine. Now you can install LEI 6.5 into multiple Domino partitions.
  • Performance improvements for virtual document activities — Improved the performance of virtual document activities. Faster view refresh and faster document display.
  • Read access control for connection and activity documents — Increased security by adding read access control for connection and activity documents. Only users specified will have access to these connection and activity documents.
  • Enhanced reporting includes dependent activities — Activity logs now will contain more information about dependent activities.
  • Expanded connectivity options for IBM eServer iSeries™ — Connect to Oracle, Informix™, SQL Server, and Sybase with enhanced connectivity options.
  • Lotus Connectors enhanced to use DataDirect ODBC 4.1 drivers — These new drivers add support for XML and MySQL. These new drivers from DataDirect use wire protocol to access the external data source. This means there is no requirement for client code to be installed that accesses the external data source. The ODBC driver includes the necessary code to access the external data source.
  • Support for Linux Red Hat 7.2 and Solaris 9 operating systems — New support has been added for the Linux Red Hat 7.2 operating system. In addition to the Solaris 8 operating system, support has been added for the Solaris 9 operating system.

IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 6.5 offerings currently available

IBM Lotus Domino Messaging Server: IBM Lotus Domino Messaging Server for access to the messaging and calendaring functions of IBM Lotus Domino only. This server includes the partitioning feature, which allows customers to have multiple instances of Domino Servers on the same machine. This server requires that each user accessing the server have a Client Access License (CAL). This offering replaces the Domino Mail server.

IBM Lotus Domino Utility Server Express: The IBM Lotus Domino Utility Server Express offering is powered by the Domino Enterprise Server, and provides unlimited access to collaborative applications, but does not allow the use of individual mail files. Customers can choose to access their Domino applications through a Web browser, or via a separately purchased Lotus Notes client. IBM Lotus Domino Utility Server Express makes applications available to internal or external users. Access is allowed for individually authenticated as well as anonymous users.

Lotus IBM Domino Utility Server Express entitles customers to take full advantage of Domino's advanced clustering and partitioning features. This all adds up to create the perfect choice for a company looking to fully deploy a custom Domino application either created in house, purchased from a third-party vendor, or created by one of IBM's thousands of expert Business Partners. Domino applications not only help reduce a company's total cost of ownership, but also can dramatically improve a company's core business applications, leading to increased revenue.

Limited warranty applies: Yes

Warranty: This program has warranty for a minimum of one year from acquisition from IBM or authorized Business Partner. The warranty provided to the customer, for at least one year from acquisition, is access to databases (read Web sites) for program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which customers can download or obtain otherwise and install at their leisure.

Program Technical Support: Technical Support of a program product will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This Technical Support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. Customers will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program, return it within 30 days from the invoice date to the party (either IBM or its reseller) from whom you acquired it for a refund. This applies only to your first acquisition of the program.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and pre-emptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.

Software Maintenance applies: Yes

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Subscription and Technical Support, is now included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support for the products announced in this letter is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity by providing voice and/or electronic access into the IBM support organizations.

IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option that is available.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your (1) routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and (2) code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at:

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for (1) the design and development of applications, (2) your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or (3) failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.
