Overview

IBM WebSphere® Development Studio Client for iSeries™ (Development Studio Client) V5.1 inherits and extends WebSphere Studio Site Developer (Site Developer) V5.1 to deliver an integrated development environment (IDE) and tools for developing Java™, Web, Web services, client/server, and iSeries server applications. The iSeries enhancements to Site Developer V5.1 make it easy to create, test, deploy, and maintain sophisticated e-business applications with little Java, Web, or Web-service programming.

The improved iSeries server development capabilities of this Eclipse-based IDE provide many compelling reasons for application developers to upgrade from Application Development ToolSet (ADTS) or CoOperative Development Environment (CODE).

The IDE reduces the learning curve by providing a consistent interface for developing iSeries server applications and e-business applications. This allows developers to progress easily to new levels in their application development. The IDE delivers on the promise of tool integration and interoperability. It enables seamless integration with best-of-breed tools from IBM and several key iSeries partners.

The IBM WebFacing Tool, a component of Development Studio Client, makes it easy to quickly and cost effectively Web-enable your existing 5250 applications. The numerous iSeries-specific wizards, additions to the Web diagram editor, and other extensions make it easy to build e-business applications that reuse existing iSeries programs, data, and skills.

IBM WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition for iSeries (Development Studio Client Advanced Edition) V5.1 inherits the improved Web, Enterprise Java Bean (EJB), and J2EE development capabilities from WebSphere Studio Application Developer (Application Developer) V5.1. It also provides support that makes it easy to integrate Web and Web-enabled applications using the WebFacing Tool into the IBM WebSphere Portal server. Description

WebSphere Development Studio Client for iSeries V5.1

Development Studio Client inherits and extends the robust, easy-to-use development environment of WebSphere Studio Site Developer V5.1 for creating, building, and maintaining dynamic Web sites, or developing Java, Web, and Web services applications. The extensions in Development Studio Client make it easy to access iSeries data and programs for Java, Web, and Web services developers. It also includes a robust, easy-to-use development environment for creating, building, and maintaining iSeries RPG, COBOL, C, and C++ applications, and Web-enabled applications using the IBM WebFacing Tool. The Development Studio Client infrastructure facilitates the seamless integration of all development tools, IBM and non-IBM.

The Remote System Explorer (RSE) allows the iSeries developer to leverage the capabilities of the integrated development environment for developing iSeries server applications. RSE provides iSeries system access (similar to PDM) from the Eclipse-based IDE for editing, compiling, and debugging iSeries applications.

The built-in editor in RSE provides:

  • RPG, COBOL, CL, and DDS syntax checking
  • RPG, COBOL, and DDS program verification
  • Support for language-sensitive help (F1)
  • Ability to set and run to a debugger breakpoint

RSE is able to access iSeries OS/400® resources, Integrated File System (IFS) files and commands, remote UNIX®, Windows®, and Linux files and commands, and local Windows files. The "universal" support for files and commands has been dramatically improved. There is new support for drag and drop, command shells, and intelligent command interpretation.

RSE is not just for developing RPG and COBOL applications for the iSeries server. RSE also provides iSeries system access to any of the Eclipse plug-ins. RSE provides iSeries access for developing Java, Web, and Web services applications. Partner plug-ins to Eclipse for source control management and impact analysis also use RSE to access the iSeries system resources. Since RSE is an Eclipse plug-in (written in Java), it can provide system access from the Eclipse-based IDE to any remote system (such as IBM eServer pSeries™, xSeries®, or zSeries®, Linux, or Sun Solaris).

The IBM WebFacing Tool makes it quick, easy, and cost-effective to create and customize Web interfaces to existing 5250 applications. Web interfaces can be created for most iSeries applications without DDS or application source code changes. Several updates are being introduced in this release to support large volumes of data. New samples and examples are being written to reduce the learning curve associated with converting, customizing, and deploying these applications.

VisualAge RPG is a component of Development Studio Client. It allows RPG programmers to:

  • Create rich event-driven GUI applications that run on Windows platforms with easy access to iSeries applications and data
  • Generate Java source code that will run on any server that supports a Java virtual machine

In Development Studio Client V5.1, VisualAge RPG is enhanced to support the RPG IV language definition that is shipped in ILE RPG Version 5 Release 2.

The key Development Studio Client V5.1 enhancements include:

  • Improved performance. V5.1 is faster and uses less memory for builds, WebSphere Test Environment startup, and UI-intensive development.
  • Web Site Designer, which helps to create, import, and manage a whole Web site with a visual user interface.
  • Event support in Page Designer and Visual Editor for Java, which improve productivity for application development.
  • Hot method replace for the debugger, which helps debug application code without restarting the unit test server.
  • SQLJ support (SQLJ Editor, SQJL Profile, DB2® SQLJ Stored Procedures, Debug) to help you with creating and debugging applications using SQLJ.
  • Struts 1.1 support, including Web tools for iSeries.
  • WS-I Support, WSDL Editor, and WSDL Explorer, which allow you to create Web services to the latest standard with improved productivity.
  • WebSphere Application Server V5.0.2 support, enabling you to deploy and test your application to the latest application server.
  • Eclipse technology updated to Eclipse 2.1 for improved usability for Java Editor/Debugger.
  • A new installer to improve performance and usability of the install process.
  • Improvements to the WebFacing Tool to support higher volumes of data.
  • Improved iSeries samples and examples to reduce the learning curve associated with the IDE.
  • A tutorial to help you make the shift to this new IDE.
  • More flexibility in iSeries Projects for generating compile CL scripts.
  • Improvements to the RSE, including:
    • The ability to select multiple files and issue a single compile command against all of them.
    • New sorting views to group jobs on the iSeries under related subsystems.
    • The ability to specify a filter before expanding a Library, Source physical file, and so forth. This is similar to prompting on the Option 12 key in PDM.
  • Expanded editor support for ILE RPG and ILE COBOL, including:
    • Content Assist (commonly referred to as Code Assist) enablement for ILE RPG and ILE COBOL languages. By hitting "crtl+space" the user is given a list of possible code snippets for the target column and spec.
    • Outline view window that shows the structure of the RPG or COBOL code in the file being edited. By default, the outline is dynamically synchronized with editing to give a quick look at the program logic, and the ability to jump to these locations.

Product positioning

WebSphere Development Studio Client for iSeries V5.1

Development Studio Client V5.1 is entitled to the customers of the iSeries tier-priced server product, WebSphere Development Studio for iSeries. WebSphere Development Studio contains the server application development (AD) tools: ILE RPG, ILE COBOL, ILE C, ILE C++, and Application Development ToolSet (ADTS). It provides entitlement to the new workstation components, Development Studio Client V5.1. In most shops, Development Studio Client V5.1 will be delivered in this manner. WebSphere Development Studio is priced and packaged to make it pervasive in the iSeries marketplace.

The workstation tools are packaged into Development Studio Client V5.1 for two major reasons:

  • To provide access to these tools for consultants and analysts who may not have their own iSeries system.
  • To provide a convenient method to keep the iSeries AD products current. As new enhancements are made to the Eclipse-based workstation products, these enhancements will be integrated into Development Studio Client V5.1.

Development Studio Client V5.1 contains tools for:

  • Web and Java development
    • WebSphere Studio Site Developer
    • Java and Web Tools for iSeries
  • Web-enabling 5250 applications
    • IBM WebFacing Tool
  • Development of iSeries server applications
    • iSeries project, file, edit, compile, and debug support in the IDE
    • CODE
    • VisualAge RPG
    • Distributed debugger

Web and Java development: Development Studio Client V5.1 is based on WebSphere Studio Site Developer V5.1. Site Developer is a hybrid based on the merging of capabilities from VisualAge for Java, Professional Edition and WebSphere Studio, Standard Edition and integration with the new WebSphere Studio Workbench. Site Developer provides a comprehensive set of tools for Web and Java development. iSeries specific enhancements are added to these Web and Java developments tools as part of Development Studio Client V5.1. These enhancements make it easier to develop Web and Java applications that access iSeries data and applications. Development Studio Client V5.1 satisfies the needs of most iSeries developers.

Server development: ADTS has been the traditional method for developing and maintaining server-side iSeries applications. Development Studio Client V5.1 includes new highly integrated and highly extendible tools for iSeries RPG, COBOL, C, C++, CL, and DDS development. These new tools offer programmers a development experience that is consistent with the experience for developing Java, Web, Web services, and XML applications, lowering the learning curve for all. These new-generation tools include the Remote System Explorer for a PDM-like experience, and iSeries Projects for team-based development (together with a Eclipse-compliant software change management repository). They offer rich support for exploring the file system, compiling/building, editing, running, and debugging. The iSeries Projects support enables effective team support leveraging any iSeries or LAN resident source repository that supports Eclipse. The new tools also allow the programmer to leverage the classic CODE tools for extremely rich editing and DDS design support. The combination of the Remote System Explorer, the iSeries Projects, and the easily accessible CODE classic tools offers a superset of functionality over the classic, and feature-frozen, ADTS tools. It offers significant productivity and usability gains, support for disconnected and team development, and a common harness for the tight integration of IBM- and ISV-supplied tools for server development. Using these new-generation tools also implicitly increases a programmer's skills and makes the transition into new programming models easier, such as the WebFacing Tool, Web, Web services, and XML.

Web-enabling applications — IBM WebFacing Tool versus 5250 datastream intercept products: There are two basic types of tools for converting an application with a 5250 interface to an application with a browser interface.

The WebFacing Tool generates Java components to create this new browser interface in a development-time step. The WebFacing Tool is a development tool. It generates code.

There are a number of IBM and non-IBM tools that convert the 5250 datastream into a Web interface during application execution. These 5250 datastream conversion products carry numerous labels like screen scrapers, Web emulators, dynamic transformation tools, and 5250 datastream intercept products. These tools typically have some development capabilities. However, their basic function is to take the datastream that delivers the 5250 interface and convert it to HTML for the browser interface.

Web-enabling applications with the IBM WebFacing Tool offers advantages over the 5250 intercept tools in terms of standards, costs, and extendibility.

Standards: The IBM WebFacing Tool creates a Web interface to an existing 5250 application by generating standard Java components: Java ServerPages (JSPs), Java beans, and servlets. These standards-based Java components can be customized with any Web and Java tools that support the Java industry standards. Development Studio Client ships Web and Java development tools that can be used to customize this Web interface.

Because the WebFacing Tool creates industry-standard Java components, the Web interface should run in any application server that supports these standards. However, the Web interface created by the WebFacing Tool is tested only against the WebSphere Application Server products.

Typically, 5250 datastream intercept products interpret/decompose the 5250 datastream to create the Web interface, and are tied to a proprietary, chargeable run-time environment.

Costs: The Web interface created by the WebFacing Tool requires an application server to execute. Other than the application server, there are no additional tools or run-time charges associated with a Web-enabled application created with the IBM WebFacing Tool. With the new server models announced in January 2003, applications Web-enabled with the IBM WebFacing Tool run in batch mode and don't require any 5250 capacity. This substantially reduces the total solution costs for applications that have been Web-enabled with the WebFacing Tool. An application that has been Web-enabled using the IBM WebFacing Tool can support both a 5250 and Web interface concurrently and so there is no dual maintenance. Many 5250 datastream intercept tools have both a development-time tool charge and a run-time/usage charge and require 5250 capacity to execute. This substantially increases the costs of these Web-enabled solutions.

Extendibility: The IBM WebFacing Tool creates standard Java components that can be leveraged and extended with standard Java tools. Using the WebFacing Tool is often the first step in leveraging 5250 applications and extending them to an e-business environment. With intercept tools, a base e-business/Web application is not created. The e-business interfaces are generated at run time. This makes it difficult to customize and extend the e-business application.

When would you use a 5250 intercept product rather than the IBM WebFacing Tool?

A 5250 intercept tool should be chosen if:

  • The display file DDS source code (required by the IBM WebFacing Tool) is not available for the application that you want to Web-enable.
  • Your DDS source code has used DDS keywords that are not supported by the IBM WebFacing Tool. Then an intercept tool might prove a better choice. The WebFacing Tool currently supports most DDS keywords.
  • Your company has a heterogeneous environment and you want one Web-enabling solution that can handle both 5250 and 3270 user interfaces. Many intercept products support multiple interface standards.
  • You are creating a browser interface to an application that accesses iSeries system screens. System screens are not based on display file DDS code. The WebFacing Tool cannot create a Web interface for these system screens. System screens generate a 5250 interface and so a 5250 intercept product can Web-enable these screens.
  • You are Web-enabling a 5250 application that runs in S/36 emulation. The WebFacing Tool server does not support the S/36 emulation environment.

Usage restriction: Yes. For Usage Requirements, refer to the License that accompanies the product. The Program-unique Terms section of the license documents the restrictions of the use of the product and/or the software associated with the product.

Software Maintenance applies: Yes. Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Subscription and Technical Support, is now included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support for the products announced in this letter is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity by providing voice and/or electronic access into the IBM support organizations.

IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option that is available.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your (1) routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and (2) code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at:

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for (1) the design and development of applications, (2) your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or (3) failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and pre-emptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
