Description

DB2 UDB is the database for your warehouse solution. DB2 scales easily across a range of server platforms and architectures, from 100 GB databases to 10 TB databases. Published 100 GB and 10 TB TPC-H benchmarks prove it. DB2 Data Warehouse Editions are available for Linux, Windows® 2000/2003 servers, Solaris, and AIX®.

DB2 UDB Enterprise Server Edition V8.1 and DB2 Data Partitioning Feature V8.1 are included with Data Warehouse Enterprise Edition. DB2 UDB Workgroup Server Unlimited Edition V8.1 is provided with Data Warehouse Standard Edition.

Data warehouse features in DB2 V8.1 include:

  • Shared-Nothing Partitioning Feature that provides no-limits scaling
  • Simplified management of databases for all sizes
  • Multidimensional data clustering-optimized table and index structures
  • User-maintained materialized query tables for cube-like performance of select queries
  • Online Table Load and Reorganization
  • Configuration Advisor provides automated out-of-box configuration tuned for data warehousing

New Cube Views

DB2 Cube Views V8.1 benefits BI users throughout an organization by decreasing the development time required to define shared OLAP models across multiple tools. New metadata and tooling allow cube views to be defined once in DB2 and used in many leading BI tools. Because the shared common metadata includes aggregation formulas and calculations, users benefit from greater consistency of analytical results across the enterprise.

DB2 Data Warehouse Edition includes features designed specifically to improve the usability and performance of Business Partner BI products. Data warehouse administrators can build optimal structures in DB2, based on the recommendations of the Optimization Advisor, improving the performance of OLAP queries generated by partner tools. End users of business analysis tools utilizing DB2-managed metadata experience more consistent query results. Designers find it much quicker and easier to import cube views and mappings from DB2, versus defining the same metadata separately in multiple partner tools.

DB2 Cube Views works with DB2 Office Connect Analytics, a Microsoft Excel plug-in, to display and navigate cube views in DB2 — turning the spreadsheet into a desktop OLAP tool.

For additional details, refer to the DB2 Cube Views section in the Additional Information section.

Workload and Query Management

DB2 Query Patroller V8.1 is included with DB2 UDB Data Warehouse Enterprise Edition. The workload management and warehouse administration features of Query Patroller let you control your data warehouse, enabling you to:

  • Manage query response time and throughput
  • Limit the impact of large or complex queries on the system
  • Share cached query results
  • Report on warehouse usage
  • Eliminate the runaway query syndrome
  • Improve end-user satisfaction by allocating warehouse resources according to defined service levels

DB2 Query Patroller lets you manage and control all aspects of query submission and execution. Enhancements include server-based SQL intercept from all sources, better SQL statement costing, additional options for result set storage, and simplified installation, configuration, and administration.

Query Patroller improves data warehouse scalability so that hundreds of users can safely submit queries, even on databases that contain several terabytes of data. Query Patroller allows an administrator to automatically manage and control all aspects of query submission, acting as agents on behalf of the end user. It prioritizes and schedules queries so that query completion is more predictable and computing resources are efficiently used. Administrators can establish user groups with varying resource limits so that high-priority users will be assured of reasonable system response times, even when the overall system load experiences radical spikes in demand. Additionally, Query Patroller can be set to passively monitor the database query environment so that administrators can graph and analyze database and user community characteristics.

DB2 Query Patroller is integrated with the DB2 Optimizer and analyzes query costs, and can then schedule or dispatch the queries so that the load is balanced across the database partitions.

With the latest revision, IBM has completely rearchitected Query Patroller from the ground up, integrating the query-governing functionality into the DB2 Query Patroller Center, similar to the DB2 Control Center, and providing an easy-to-use user interface. Query Patroller is completely server-based with no client software required. This allows it to provide global span-of-control, seeing all queries regardless of client application.

Database and system administrators implementing data warehouses, data marts, or any database where query response time is an issue, will find the functionality provided by DB2 Query Patroller indispensable.

For additional details, refer to the DB2 Query Patroller section in the Additional Information section.

Intelligent Data Mining

DB2 UDB Data Warehouse Editions include IBM's industry-leading data mining features. Data mining capabilities in DB2 are standards-based, using XML/PMML and SQL, which makes it easy to learn and use. The advanced DB2-based Intelligent Miner Modeling data mining algorithms generate models that can be visualized using DB2 Intelligent Miner Visualization. The best models can then be integrated into your real-time data warehouse and business applications using DB2 Intelligent Miner Scoring. As with all DB2-based analytic functions, DB2 Intelligent Miner Scoring harnesses the underlying parallelism, scalability, and manageability of the database.

Unlike the other component products described here, DB2 Intelligent Miner products V8.1 have previously been announced and therefore are omitted from this announcement. Refer to Software Announcement 202-214 , dated September 17, 2002, for additional information.

DB2 Query Patroller

Get control over governing queries, analyzing costs, managing resources, and tracking usage.

DB2 Query Patroller is a preemptive query governor that intercepts and evaluates queries before they are executed to help maintain control of the system resource usage and manage response times. This provides the database administrator (DBA) with real-time monitoring of the database system and also allows the DBA to perform historical analysis of the queries and database objects to optimize resource usage. In V8.1, the historical analysis of the queries and object usage no longer requires that the result sets for held queries be kept.

A newly designed graphical interface offers a single administration tool for much simplified administration. DB2 Query Patroller can also be configured to control more than one database.

Preemptive Query Governor

The DB2 Query Patroller preemptive governing facility intercepts queries before they are executed and evaluates the queries against specified criteria to determine if the query should be:

  • Run immediately
  • Held until resources are available
  • Blocked until the DBA releases or cancels the query

This helps to:

  • Prevent runaway queries from reaching DB2 and degrading the performance of the database
  • Run short queries with a more consistent elapsed time because the long, complex statements can be queued, blocked, or scheduled to be run during off-peak hours
  • Allow the most urgent queries and users to be given priority over less important queries or users
  • Prevent users from monopolizing the computing resources of the database server
  • Prevent peak workload times from overloading the computing resources of the database server
  • Run expensive queries at scheduled, off-peak times to reduce their impact to the production system

Control System Resource Usage

Query Patroller allows the DBA to set limits on:

  • The number of queries a user can execute concurrently
  • The maximum cost of a query that a user is allowed to run
  • The total cost of all concurrently running queries on the database
  • The total number of queries that are allowed to execute concurrently on the database
  • The total number of queries of a particular size defined by the DBA that are allowed to run concurrently on the database

When a query exceeds one of the defined thresholds, Query Patroller prevents the query from executing by taking one of the following actions:

  • Holding the query and notifying the user. This allows the DBA to review the query and cancel it or take other actions. This action is taken for cases where the query is too expensive.
  • Queuing the query to be run at a later time. When queries complete executing in the DB2 engine, queries in the queue are automatically submitted to DB2. This action is taken when the system is too busy.

Query Patroller also allows different priorities to be assigned to different users, groups, or classes of queries.

Improved Historical Analysis

The historical analysis features of Query Patroller gives DBAs a better understanding of the database and object usage from a business and service quality point of view and helps in capacity planning as the database grows. Some examples of information that can be provided by Query Patroller include:

  • Building reports on:
    • Database usage
    • Typical response times
    • Potential capacity upgrade requirements
  • Identifying users who are consuming a large amount of resources on the database server
  • Controlling or limiting users from monopolizing database resources
  • Removing unused database objects:
    • Tables
    • Indexes
    • Columns
  • Assessing the impact of configuration changes and new database objects
  • Identifying and troubleshooting problem queries

Real-Time Database Monitoring

Query Patroller allows DBAs to monitor the database in real time to:

  • View the current workload on the production system
  • View the status of queries that have been submitted by users
  • Cancel a query that has been identified as being too costly
  • Evaluate queries that have been held by Query Patroller due to the rules that were set up by the administrators

Result Tables Now Optional: With V8.1, you no longer need to create result tables to perform historical analysis. In addition, result tables can now be configured to be pruned automatically.

Simplified Administration/Monitoring/Configuration

Query Patroller Version 8.1 is much simpler to administer. All of the previous administration tools are combined into one graphical tool, the Query Patroller Center.

Ability to Monitor Multiple Databases

Query Patroller Version 8.1 allows users to monitor all DB2 UDB for Linux, UNIX®, and Windows® databases — in the same DB2 instance or in different DB2 instances — at the same time. The DBA can now set up the QP Center on one machine and monitor all databases in the enterprise.

DB2 Office Connect

DB2 Office Connect is a plug-in for Microsoft™ Excel that enables sophisticated database query and update for the creation of dynamically updating spreadsheets that seamlessly issue SQL to IBM data warehouses or almost any other JDBC-compliant data source. This third-generation connection tool enables end users to "slice and dice" data in a familiar and easy-to-use spreadsheet. Users can produce their own reports through drag-and-drop capabilities, eliminating the requirement for application programming expertise.

Secure Web-based Microsoft Excel applications can be deployed with minimum investment of time and resources. Such centralized spreadsheet models can be distributed over the company's intranet or over the Internet in a secured controlled environment.

Business benefits include:

  • Data reporting and visualization for e-business
  • Improved decision making, response, and flexibility
  • Web-based framework for secure database access and manipulation
  • Ability to leverage existing office infrastructure
  • Minimal learning curve

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Subscription and Technical Support, is now included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support for the products announced in this letter are provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity by providing voice and/or electronic access into the IBM support organizations.

IBM includes Software Maintenance with each program acquired during the coverage period. The coverage period means the period commencing on the date you acquire the program up to the first or second anniversary date, depending on whether you acquired coverage for one or two anniversaries. The coverage period for Software Maintenance acquired in the two months preceding an anniversary date will be extended to the next applicable anniversary date.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. This assistance is not available to your end users. IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at:

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.
