CICS® VSAM Recovery Version 3 (CICSVR) is a tool for recovering lost VSAM data, adding yet more integrity to your CICS solution. Version 3 Release 2 (V3.2) extends the value of CICSVR through improved efficiency and through changes that make the recovery process easier to manage.
Included in CICSVR V3.2:
CICSVR V3.2 builds on the rich function of Version 3 Release 1, which was the first release of CICSVR to protect data sets that are updated by both CICS and batch applications. That release also offered improved efficiency for existing users by applying change-accumulation, enhancing the automated forward recovery process and providing facilities to support remote site recovery.
CICSVR is a member of the CICS Tools family developed by IBM Software Group.
CICS VSAM Recovery V3 is an automated recovery tool that helps you recover from loss of VSAM data due to catastrophic hardware failure, software failure, or human error.
CICSVR uses logs to recover your VSAM data. It supports:
CICSVR V3 offers extensive improvements over the previous version, resulting in a World Class forward recovery tool. As well as providing new function, such as change accumulation, recovery automation and improved remote site recovery for existing CICS users, CICSVR V3 can be used with batch applications. CICSVR VSAM batch logging can record updates to VSAM spheres made by batch applications. If the VSAM spheres are lost or damaged, CICSVR can use the log records to recreate the spheres.
With the increasing reliability of enterprise hardware and with stable enterprise software systems, catastrophic loss of data is a rare event. Nevertheless, for most enterprises the residual risk of loss is unacceptable. With careful planning, good operational procedures, and the services of CICSVR, you can eliminate almost all risk.
CICSVR can also perform a selective recovery of VSAM data sets. You can
specify which log records you want applied during recovery processing by
specifying the appropriate identifiers (file, terminal, and transaction).
For example, you can create a recovery job that will not apply any log
records produced from a particular transaction. The resulting data set
would therefore have all updates made by the specified transaction
User-Friendly Dialog Interface
CICSVR is designed to help you recover lost or damaged VSAM data sets, using a CICSVR ISPF dialog. You navigate through the dialog panels, selecting spheres you want to recover and backups you want to use. Behind the scenes, CICSVR executes utilities such as LOGOFLOGS SCAN to get the latest information on the VSAM spheres from CICS. CICSVR contains the latest backup information about the VSAM spheres by receiving notifications from DFSMSdss and by querying DFSMShsm. Then the dialogs generate a recovery job that you can submit when you are ready. The CICSVR dialogs supply all the details (for example, VSAM spheres and backups) and you select those you want. By simply accepting the default parameters that CICSVR displays on the panels, you create a job that restores each sphere from its latest logical backup and then performs a forward recovery up to the current date and time.
Usability enhancements in CICSVR V3.2 allow you to customize the system so that you can filter the information you see, making it easier to manage the recovery process. You can define in detail which data you want recovered; for example, records for a particular terminal ID, transaction ID, or file ID.
If you do not want to use the latest backup, you can get a list of all
the DFSMShsm logical backups or DFSMSdss logical copies or logical dumps
for that sphere and select the backup that you want from a list. You can
use a group function in CICSVR V3.2 to group data sets according to your
own criteria, so that you can manage their backup and recovery as a unit.
Automation for DFSMShsm Backups and DFSMSdss Copies and Dumps
You can use any backup and restore program with CICSVR, but if you use
DFSMShsm or DFSMSdss, CICSVR provides full automation of your recovery.
With full automation, CICSVR displays the DFSMShsm backups and DFSMSdss
copies and dumps for your sphere, and will restore the selected backup.
Recovery for Batch Updates
CICSVR V3 can provide forward recovery support for batch data sets as well as online data sets. This support requires that all systems are running as a sysplex, with the LOGR policy defined. When enabled, it provides logging for VSAM data sets that are not currently in use by other applications. CICSVR VSAM batch logging uses the CICSVR server address space to communicate with CICSVR and other DFSMS components.
CICSVR VSAM batch logging calls the system logger to write the log records to the MVS system logger's log stream. The system logger provides a common logging facility for all z/OS and OS/390 images, providing greater 24x7 availability in the event that an image fails. The coupling facility enables logging from throughout the sysplex to be directed to a common log stream, if desired.
CICSVR uses log records to recover your lost or damaged VSAM spheres.
The VSAM spheres will be returned to the state that existed before the
failure occurred. CICSVR is automatically notified of all updates made
to VSAM spheres by batch applications (the LOGOFLOGS scan utility does
not need to be run). Therefore, CICSVR automates the creation of a
recovery job for VSAM data sets updated by CICS applications, batch
applications, or both.
Reducing Recovery Time
CICSVR V3 includes a change accumulation feature which significantly
reduces the time it takes to forward recover a VSAM sphere. After a
backup has been made for a sphere, you can set up a change accumulation
batch job so that it is submitted at regular intervals by a workload
management product such as Tivoli® Workload Scheduler for z/OS. The
change accumulation batch job consolidates the forward recovery log
records into a change accumulation data set. Then, when a forward
recovery is needed, the change accumulation data set can be used in place
of the forward recovery log stream. CICSVR needs to use the forward
recovery log stream only to get the most recent log records (the records
that have not yet been consolidated by the change accumulation batch
Remote Site Recovery
CICSVR V3 provides facilities for setting up and maintaining a remote
disaster recovery site. EXPORT and IMPORT commands allow you to copy the
essential data in your Recovery Control Data Set (RCDS) so you can send
it to your remote site and load it into your remote site's RCDS.

Value Unit Based Pricing
Value Unit based pricing helps to align the prices of these products to the principle of the Parallel Sysplex License Charge (PSLC) pricing curve, which provides for a lower price per MSU (millions of service units per hour) for larger capacities.
There is also a price benefit when customers grow their capacity. Additional capacity will based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) the customer has already installed. For example, additional capacity will not be priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the capacity that is already installed.
IPLA and Subscription and Support Considerations
IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to, an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.
Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.
CICS VSAM Recovery is IBM's VSAM recovery tool for the OS/390 environment. In the event of failure that results in loss of data, CICSVR can recover lost CICS Transaction Server VSAM data to the state that existed before the damage was done. CICSVR can also recover VSAM data that was updated through batch applications using the CICSVR VSAM batch logging feature. CICSVR is for organizations where the availability and integrity of VSAM data is vital.

Specified Operating Environment
CICSVR V3.2 executes on any S/390® or IBM zSeries processor that supports the required release of OS/390 or z/OS.
A tape or cartridge unit, and a direct access storage device that is supported by z/OS and OS/390, are required.
For Concurrent Copy support, an IBM Enterprise Storage Server or equivalent is required.
For RLS mode support, a Coupling Facility is required.
OS/390 (5647-A01) V2.10, or z/OS (5694-A01) (any release) is required for installation.
With OS/390 V2.10, the following APARs (program modifications) are required to take advantage of the new functions introduced in releases 1 and 2 of CICSVR Version 3:
OW45559 OW50433 OW47025 OW51135 OW46161 OW50683 OW45560 PQ42845 OW44714 OW49899 OW51544 OW48258 OW49369 OW47781 OW49478 OW51100 OW49529 OW50538 OW49530 OW47574 OW50340 OW48701 OW50341 OW51555 OW52194 OW52490 OW52960 OW52962 OW53003 OW55972 OW55974
The following CICS® Transaction Server APARs are required to take advantage of the CICSVR VSAM batch logging function. For CICS TS V1.3 (5655-147):
For CICS TS V2.2 (5697-E93):
DFSORT V1R14 with APAR PQ42845 is required to use change accumulation if any log records are greater than 42,500 bytes.
Compatibility: If you are migrating from an earlier level of CICSVR, you should perform some migration actions, including a conversion of the RCDS (but migration of RCDS is not required if migrating from CICSVR V3.1). These migration actions should be performed when you have successfully completed SMP/E APPLY and ACCEPT of CICSVR.
To maintain the existing forward recovery capability for VSAM spheres, when migrating from CICSVR/MVS V2.3 to CICSVR V3, you must make minor changes to the JCL jobs and error exits. Refer to the CICSVR Implementation Guide for more information on the migration utility.
If you are migrating to CICSVR V3 from a release prior to CICSVR V2.3, refer to Chapter 4 in the CICSVR MVS/ESA Implementation Guide V2.3 for information.
CICSVR V3 is upwardly compatible with CICSVR V2.3.
While CICSVR V3 supports CICS Transaction Server V1 and V2 forward recovery logs, it does not support forward recovery of a CICS Transaction Server VSAM data set using a CICS Autojournal.
CICSVR V3 and CICSVR V2.3 can coexist in the same OS/390 or z/OS system if they have different RCDS data sets and are in separate libraries.
The RCDS data set is different between CICSVR V3 and previous releases. A migration utility included with the product will convert an existing RCDS from CICSVR V2.3 to CICSVR V3 format.
These actions are described in the section "Migration Considerations" in the CICSVR V3.2 Implementation Guide (SH26-4126).
Performance Considerations: A change accumulation data set can significantly reduce the time it takes to forward recover a VSAM sphere when compared to performing a forward recovery without a change accumulation data set.
The table that follows shows the reductions that were observed when a log containing one million log records was processed. Of these one million log records, 800,000 updates were made to 200,000 records. These measurements were made with CICSVR V3.1 running with CICS/ESA® V4.1. Although no further tests have been made, this information should be indicative of the benefits of change accumulation when used with subsequent releases.
As an example of how to read the table, refer to the KSDS row in Table 1. This row shows that when performing a forward recovery using a change accumulation data set, elapsed time was reduced 87% and CPU time was reduced 57% when one million log records were processed and 800,000 of the updates were made to 200,000 records.
CICSVR V3.1 forward recovery:
VSAM Data Elapsed CPU Set Type Time Time KSDS 87% 57% ESDS 93% 68% RRDS 93% 62% VRRDS 85% 59%
Performance measurement test runs for CICSVR V3 with change accumulation and CICSVR V3 without change accumulation were completed using the same test environments. The test environments included:
All measurements were run on an IBM 9672 Model RX6 (G5) in a stand-alone OS/390 environment. All of the log records resided on IBM RAMAC® 9392 connected to an IBM 3990-6 storage control unit.
The actual performance characteristics that may be experienced by any specific user or for any specific VSAM data set depend on many factors, including the number of updates made per record in the VSAM file. Therefore, the results may differ from user to user. In general, the more updates made per record, the greater the improvement will be when a change accumulation data set is used in the forward recovery.
CICSVR V3.2 is shipped on the following media for the basic object material:
