Description

IBM Output Manager for z/OS provides many z/OS application output management capabilities in a single tool in place of the multiple z/OS-based tools or facilities that administrators may have previously required, allowing them to:

  • Quickly identify which reports are to be captured
  • Designate named recipients via distribution lists
  • Easily divide and distribute data outputs appropriately with rules-based management
  • Track and audit data distribution to maintain better security
  • Identify which reports are accessed online by which users
  • Optimize efficiency and convenience when utilizing online and batch printing

IBM Output Manager for z/OS V1.1 provides enterprise customers seeking more effective z/OS-based data distribution solutions with potential cost savings and greater productivity.

Rapid, Reliable Data Capture and Distribution

With IBM Output Manager for z/OS, administrators utilize an easy-to-use ISPF interface to:

  • Quickly develop highly accurate selection rules that specify which system output to capture
  • Create custom report definitions that further pinpoint smaller subsets of data as needed

Distribution lists of business decision makers can be created manually or optionally derived by importing existing user ID lists with procedures created by the administrator.

After rules defined for dividing data outputs are assigned to distribution lists, report data is automatically captured in sequential files, and indexes of captured reports are stored in DB2.

Recipients are able to search for reports by name, view reports online, and better control which reports are printed and when. Because data outputs have been selectively delivered online, and potentially massive report outputs have been appropriately divided, decision makers only see information they need to see, data distribution is better restricted to authorized parties, and decision makers always get quicker, easier access to the business information relevant to their needs.

Administrators can easily maintain and review historical information about production reports, to whom they were directed, and who accessed which reports online. This capability augments existing z/OS data security by introducing effective auditing, and makes evaluation of real-world reports usage easier. In this way, unused reports can be easily identified and retired, freeing up resources for further development or enhancement of heavily used reports that have real business impact for end users.

IBM Output Manager for z/OS avoids duplication by intelligently relying upon existing z/OS facilities to deliver functionality, thereby enabling rapid installation while minimizing maintenance and configuration. This provides important efficiencies, such as allowing administrators to support existing z/OS dataset security simply by following existing dataset naming conventions when directing outputs to recipients. In this way, only end users to whom access has already been granted in RACF® may view the contents of relevant outputs without changing an existing security schema.

Enterprise-Scale Benefits

Data outputs and reports generated and delivered on IBM z/OS platforms support some of the world's most critical business needs. For these environments, Output Manager for z/OS gives secure, reliable data output management and distribution and an easy path to implementation and maintenance. IBM Output Manager for z/OS is designed for the enterprise looking to extend the value of their existing strategic investments in IBM z/OS computing platforms.

With enterprise-scale performance in a z/OS environment for capturing, controlling, managing, and distributing system data output, the benefits of reliable, timely, and secure information are made available to everyone in the enterprise who relies upon native z/OS facilities for key business data.

By taking advantage of the strategic strengths and manageability of z/OS, IBM Output Manager for z/OS allows administrators to more easily and securely meet escalating demands for more and better information within z/OS environments.

IBM Output Manager for z/OS provides an affordable mission-critical choice for any enterprise that trusts its data management to IBM's most scalable computing platforms.

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

Output Manager is capable as of December 6, 2002, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Value Unit Based Pricing

Value Unit based pricing will help to align the prices of these products to the principle of the PSLC pricing curve which provides for a lower price per MSU (millions of service units per hour) for larger capacities.

There is also a price benefit when customers grow their capacity. Additional capacity will based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) the customer has already installed, for example, additional capacity will not be priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the capacity that is already installed.

Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.

International Program License Agreement (IPLA) and Subscription and Support Considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to, an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product Positioning

Output Manager is an ideal product for all z/OS and OS/390 users who need to manage output distribution. Since practically every OS/390 enterprise grapples with handling system output and reports generated by z/OS host applications, Output Manager can ease the pain of everyday report management tasks. Specifically, Output Manager will be of interest to any OS/390 or z/OS users who have a need to:

  • Migrate to an IBM solution from alternative vendor products
  • Utilize an alternative with IBM terms and conditions
  • Create reports within a distributed environment while ensuring data integrity, security, and access
  • Customize reports for end-user needs
  • Split out SYSOUT data into individual reports
  • Efficiently distribute reports throughout an enterprise
  • Capture, track, and manage report data and the conditions under which those reports were generated

Unlike alternative vendor solutions that may require multiple product offerings, OM provides a single integrated product solution. Additionally, OM exploits readily available z/OS capabilities, thereby avoiding proprietary approaches.

Globalization Support

The initial release of Output Manager provides English language single-byte character support (SBCS).

Translation from Millions of Service Units (MSUs) to Value Units

                  MSUs Value Units/MSU

Base 1-3 1.00
Tier A 4-45 .45
Tier B 46-175 .36
Tier C 176-315 .27
Tier D 316+ .20

The total number of Value Units is calculated according to the following example:

If the customer has installed 1,000 MSUs, the applicable Value Units would be:

3 * 1.00 + 42 * 0.45 + 130 * 0.36 + 140 * 0.27 + 685 * 0.20 = 244 Value Units

When calculating the total number of Value Units, the sum is to be rounded up to the next integer.

Value Units for IBM 9672 Processors will be based upon the full capacity of these systems. This is applicable to all S/390®-based systems that are measured on MSU capacity. Information on MSU capacities can be found in the IBM System/370™, System/390®, and zSeries™ Machine Exhibit (Z125-3901).

Value Units for zSeries will be based upon full MSU capacity as defined in the Machine Exhibits.

Value Units for Non-MSU-Based S/390 Processors:

MP3000 Models
 H30       =   6.00 Value Units
 H50       =   8.00 Value Units
 H70       =   12.00 Value Units

P/390, R/390,
 IBM 3006 = 2.00 Value Units

A tool is available that provides support for transforming the MSU-based capacities of S/390 systems to new Value Units by calculating the applicable number of Value Units for a given number of MSUs. The person preparing for an order is required to use this tool to calculate the number of Value Units, based upon the number of MSUs (processor capacity). CFSW expects Value Units as configuration input.

Terms and Conditions

Sub-Capacity Charges Terms and Conditions

IBM eServer zSeries software charges at less than full machine capacity for eligible Data Management (DM) and Application Development (AD) Tools apply when z/OS is running in z/Architecture™ (64 bit) mode on a zSeries 900, no other MVS™-based operating system is licensed to that server, and the required information is provided by the customer in accordance with the applicable terms.

Sub-capacity charges for an eligible AD or DM Tool is based on the z/OS product defined capacity. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for eligible AD and DM Tools, the customer is required to:

  • Determine the MSUs needed for each machine on which the Tools will run. Only machines on which the customer has implemented sub-capacity Workstation License Charges (WLC) according to the above terms and conditions are eligible for charges at less than full machine capacity for the Tools.
  • Use the product defined capacity for z/OS (as specified on the Sub-Capacity Reports submitted to IBM for sub-capacity WLC) as the sub-capacity (MSUs) for each tool.
  • Submit any additional MSUs and/or Value Units required for each product along with the current entitlement in Value Units for each product.

Sub-Capacity Charges for AD and DM Tools

To be eligible for sub-capacity charges for AD and DM Tools, the machine on which the AD and DM Tools are running must be eligible for WLC sub-capacity charges terms and conditions. The customer must have signed the Attachment for zSeries Workload License Charges-Pre-ILM (Z125-6516) and submitted at least one Sub-Capacity Report to IBM as defined in the attachment.

With sub-capacity charges, the charge for an eligible AD or DM Tool is based on the z/OS product defined capacity. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for each eligible AD and DM Tool for each machine, the customer should:

  • Determine the MSUs needed for the machine on which the Tools will run. In a data sharing environment, determine the aggregate MSUs needed on the machine where the Tools run. Use the product defined capacity (MSUs) for z/OS (as specified on the Sub-Capacity Reports submitted to IBM for sub-capacity WLC) as the sub-capacity (MSUs) for each Tool.
  • Submit any additional MSUs and/or Value Units required for each product along with the current entitlement in Value Units for each product.
  • If the use of sub-capacity pricing terms for AD and DM Tools results in a reduced requirement for Value Units, thus freeing up entitlements, customers can reallocate the entitlement difference by distributing the Value Units across a larger or different set of systems, or reserve them for future growth. There will be no refunds for these freed up Value Units. Subscription and Support volumes and entitlements for existing contracts will continue to be at the same levels as the acquired licenses.

Management of the Value Unit entitlements continues to be a customer responsibility. If one of the following occur on a machine to which AD or DM Tools are licensed, the customer must determine if additional Value Units and Subscription and Support need to be ordered for those Tools to cover the increase:

  • The z/OS defined capacity is increased.
  • The requirements for WLC sub-capacity charges are no longer met.

Licensing: IBM International Program License Agreement. Proofs of Entitlement (PoE) are required for all authorized use.

The following agreement applies for maintenance and does not require customer signatures:

  • IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Support (Z125-6011)
