Overview

Version 5.1 (V5.1) of IBM Tivoli® Monitoring for Transaction Performance offers exciting enhancements to its transaction performance management capabilities, namely:

  • Helps identify performance problems in IBM WebSphere® environments
  • Web monitoring function with more real-time reporting and analysis of Web-site performance
  • New enterprise monitoring function to support additional enterprise application types
  • Both Web and enterprise performance information support the Tivoli Enterprise™ Data Warehouse, a superior historical reporting solution, as a common repository

The transaction performance information in Tivoli Enterprise Data Warehouse can be used by certain other IBM Tivoli products, such as IBM Tivoli Service Level Advisor.

The Web transaction performance monitoring capability is enhanced to include:

  • New browser-based interfaces that deliver detailed information on Web-site performance and availability, and detailed analysis at the Web-page level to highlight Web performance issues.
  • Capability that can help the administrator adjust to events being generated and can enable the administrator to forward only important events to operations. This can help:
    • Keep operations from being overwhelmed with events
    • Keep operations focused on important events
    • Maintain high levels of Web-site performance and availability
  • The ability to monitor unique URLs through the Quality of Service (QoS) monitor. This can help provide a significantly improved level of visibility to actual end-user response time by delivering information at the individual URL level instead of aggregating the information across URLs.

The enterprise transaction performance monitoring capability is enhanced with additional business-critical enterprise applications, including:

  • Support for transaction performance monitoring of SAP and 3270 applications through transaction simulation. This helps enable the user to simulate key SAP and 3270 applications, and monitor their performance on a scheduled basis. Also, recorded transactions can be changed via an ad hoc workbench.
  • The Application Response Measurement (ARM) V2 transaction correlation capability has a more powerful graphical user interface (GUI) to show transaction correlation graphically within applications and endpoints.

Key Prerequisites

Description

IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1 adds a number of enhancements to its Web and enterprise transaction performance management capabilities. New capabilities include:

Performance Analysis in IBM WebSphere Environments

IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1 can collect component level transaction performance metrics generated by IBM WebSphere Application Server V5 and correlate them with the Web transaction capability of IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1. These correlated views can provide an in-depth capability to identify the cause of performance problems in IBM WebSphere environments. The ability to quickly drill down to the cause of performance issues can be a key to maintaining a high performance Web site. The combination of IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1's Synthetic Transaction Investigator (STI) and Application Response Measurement (ARM) capabilities, and the new performance monitoring function in IBM WebSphere Application Server V5 provide a major enhancement in analyzing performance problems in IBM WebSphere environments.

IBM WebSphere Application Server V5 provides the ability to collect performance metrics for unique transactions in ARM format. The response time information for each servlet and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) that a transaction executes can now be captured by IBM WebSphere Application Server V5 and provided to the IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1 ARM engine. V5.1 of IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance will correlate an STI transaction with the ARM data provided by IBM WebSphere Application Server V5 to provide an end-to-end view of transaction activity from the client through the IBM WebSphere environment.

A typical scenario for using STI and IBM WebSphere Application Server V5 ARM function would be for a key e-business transaction to be recorded and played back through an STI client. When the STI transaction accesses IBM WebSphere Application Server, the IBM WebSphere Application Server monitors the performance of the servlets and EJBs, and the response time metrics are stored in ARM format. This ARM data is collected by IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1 and correlated with the originating STI transaction. When viewing STI in the IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1 real-time browser interface, a hyperlink will be provided to the IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1 ARM viewer which will display the servlet and EJB response time data provided by IBM WebSphere Application Server V5. This will provide drill down from the overall transaction response time to the time spent in individual IBM Tivoli Application Server V5 components. This type of detail drill down information can provide the ability to quickly pin point performance problems and help analyze the amount of time spent in individual IBM WebSphere Application Server V5 components versus the overall transaction time. This does not require any change to the applications running on IBM WebSphere Application Server V5 and is completely non-intrusive.

Enhanced Real-time Reporting

The number of browser-based real-time reports is significantly expanded. The enhanced reporting capability can provide a much deeper level of insight into performance issues and overall Web-site performance in real-time. Through an easy-to-use browser-based interface, different groups within the organization can be provided views of the status of their e-business transactions. An overall Web site transaction display is provided to show transaction performance issues at a glance. The overall display consists of color-coded icons representing Web-monitoring endpoints. If a transaction on the endpoint is in violation, the endpoint icon will turn red. Then, the user can access the transaction view and drill down on the transaction in violation.

Below is a summary of the new reports available:

  • STI Summary
    • Overall transaction success rate
    • Overall transaction performance
    • Transaction performance by endpoint
    • Top five slowest transactions
  • STI Transactions
    • Round trip and backend service time
      • Select time period, transactions, and endpoints
      • Any data point that represents an event will be hyperlinked to underlying event records
    • Average response time
    • Availability
    • Transaction detail
      • Transaction count
      • Number failed
      • Number of thresholds exceeded
      • Minimum, maximum, and average for round trip and backend time
    • Violations
  • QoS
    • Round trip, backend service, and page render times
      • Select endpoint and tasks
      • Color-coded lines indicate status of transactions
      • Any data point that exceeded a threshold will be hyperlinked to the underlying event records
  • Overall Web Site Transaction Status
    • Color-coded endpoint display to show status
    • Hyperlink to view of transactions running on endpoint
    • Drill down on transaction violations

Graphical Page Response Time Analysis

The Page Analyzer Viewer (PAV) with the STI function is included and it provides a rich set of Web page metrics. These metrics can help aid in pinpointing the cause of performance problems by providing in-depth analysis of Web page response times. The metrics that can be collected on a per page basis include Domain Name System (DNS) resolve time, individual graphic download times, redirects, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connect times, and others. The display is through a browser-based Java™ applet that graphically displays each individual metric in the context of the overall page download time. Individual items, like image downloads, are decomposed into connect, server response, and delivery times. The response times are displayed on a single, easy-to-understand screen comprised of bars for each response time metric. The detail for each response time can be viewed through a simple mouse movement over the response time bar for that metric. In aggregate, these metrics can detail the time required to complete the rendering of a Web page.

Any STI transaction that generates an event will also generate PAV records. These records will be available as another hyperlink from the event record. In addition, an administrator can selectively turn on the PAV for a particular job and endpoint, and collect metrics for all STI transactions for that job and endpoint.

Improved Event Generation Control

Administrators will now have greater control over when events are generated in order to reduce the number of events generated due to intermittent network delays and other transient delays. This can allow the operations staff to focus their attention on serious problems. For each STI task, the administrator will be able to define the time-out interval for any request, how many times a request will be retried, and the lag time between retries. Performance alerts will be raised only on the last retry with performance results still exceeding the threshold. Other alerts, based on errors or content, will not be changed. For QoS, the administrator can define the number of times a threshold (service time, page display time, user experience time) must be exceeded within a user-defined time period before an alert is raised.

Multiple QoS Tasks

QoS supports the monitoring of individual resources on a single Web server. This can allow an administrator to monitor multiple URLs or IP addresses, and to see reports and graphs for each monitored task. Tivoli Web Services Manager V1.6 supported the monitoring of multiple URLs, but the data collected was aggregated across all URLs. Now, each URL can be seen individually and transaction performance can be tracked on a per URL basis.

Transaction Performance Recording and Playback for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Legacy Applications

Mission-critical ERP and legacy applications now can be monitored so that they comply with the agreed-to response time criteria to help ensure that enterprise users are receiving good performance. IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1 supports SAP applications and 3270 legacy applications.

A dedicated and intuitive workbench can allow you to easily:

  • Choose the transaction family (SAP or 3270)
  • Start and stop the transactions recording
  • View the transactions script with the related parameters
  • Customize the transactions flow and the related parameters with an easy editor
  • Change the default ARM calls to your needs
  • Store the changed transaction flow
  • Playback the original or changed script with the Enterprise Transaction Performance scheduler

Browser-based GUI for ARM Instrumented Applications

The Web GUI now supports viewing of correlation data as well as instance data for ARM-enabled transactions. The user can select an endpoint, an application running on the endpoint, and a specific transaction class. Once the transaction class is selected, the user can select the type of graph to display; for example, raw response time from instance data or aggregated response time data (average, minimum, maximum, and so on). By clicking on a column in the transaction instance view, the user can see the breakdown of the instance and a correlated view of ARM data for that instance. With the new GUI, you can correlate performance data on different endpoints by navigating through the Enterprise Transaction Performance database.

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

  • Communicates all information independently of color.
  • Supports interfaces commonly used by screen magnifiers. (Note: This feature applies to applications on the Windows platform only).

Product Positioning

IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1 is intended for medium-to-large businesses that require response time metrics from an end-user perspective or from actual end users. It supports response time metrics for e-business applications as well as enterprise applications within the enterprise.

IBM Tivoli Monitoring and select IBM Tivoli Monitoring for ... products provide performance and throughput metrics for Web servers and Web application servers. However, these products are reporting the performance and throughput metrics on a component basis (for example, this servlet has a response time of x and a throughput of y). IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1 reports response times from an end-user's perspective across components and can drill down to the component detail. It is important to remember that IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance V5.1 is required for an end-user perspective of response times.

Software Maintenance

Software Maintenance is included with each product authorization acquired. Software Maintenance provides an easy and effective way by which you have access, during the coverage period, to eligible new versions and releases and to remote technical support for your covered products.

The technical support, included in Software Maintenance, provides remote support during normal business hours in your country or location as well as access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for mission-critical (Severity 1) problems.

With Software Maintenance, you receive the following technical support benefits:

  • Telephone access and/or electronic access via the Web to an IBM Customer Support Center.
  • Support for routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related problems.
  • Support during normal country business hours; namely, prime-shift hours, Monday through Friday, excluding national or statutory holidays.
  • Support for mission-critical (Severity 1) problems during non-prime shift hours; namely, all hours outside normal country business hours including national and/or statutory holidays.
  • Two-hour response-time objective during prime shift for voice and electronic submission. The response objective for critical/emergency problems during offshift is also two hours.
  • Access to hints, tips, and frequently asked questions.
  • Access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Open Authorized Technical Caller list to submit problems to IBM Support Centers on your behalf. Open to any number of technical specialists within your IS organization. Each caller must be registered through the IBM problem submission Web site in order to submit problems. Problem submission is handled by the Site Technical Contact as listed on the Passport Advantage enrollment form.
  • eCare for Software is an initiative designed to enhance your electronic support experience by providing the following advantages:
    • Single view of IBM distributed software that includes easy/integrated access to the following information and functions:

    • Comprehensive electronic (via the Web) self-help capabilities available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
    • Advanced search capabilities.
    • A single interface to the IBM problem submission/management system for IBM distributed software.

Software Maintenance renewals offer you favorable pricing to continue your coverage without interruption. Passport Advantage allows you to have a common anniversary date for Software Maintenance renewals, which can simplify management and budgeting for eligible new versions and releases (and for related technical support) for your covered products. The anniversary date, established at the start of your Passport Advantage Agreement, recurs on an annual basis while your Passport Advantage Agreement remains in effect. However, regardless of when Software Maintenance is acquired, the coverage period for Software Maintenance is always up to the anniversary date specified in the acquisition.

Refer to the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement and to the IBM Software Maintenance Handbook for specific terms relating to, and a more complete description of, technical support provided through Software Maintenance.
