Description

IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager V4.2 Capabilities

Simplified Installation of IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager Components

Manage Your Enterprise Environment Across Firewalls

The Tivoli Firewall Security Toolbox V1.3 is included with IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager V4.2. This toolkit allows you to perform software distribution and inventory operations to systems that reside outside of the corporate firewall.

Enterprise Directory Integration

You can now leverage organizational information stored in enterprise directories in order to determine a set of targets for a software distribution or an inventory scan. IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager V4.2 supports integration with Microsoft™ Active Directory, Novell eDirectory, and IBM SecureWay® Directory. The Enterprise Directory Query Facility allows administrators to select a specific directory object, or container of directory objects, as subscribers for a reference model or an activity plan.

Pervasive Device Support

IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager V4.2 provides integrated support for PalmOS, PocketPC, and Nokia Communicator devices. You can now update the configuration information and software on these devices using the same tools with which you manage desktops and servers.

Resource Manager

A Tivoli management region is a three-tier architecture, including servers, gateways, and endpoints, that is created using the Tivoli Management Framework. By using the Resources Management deployment service, you can extend the Tivoli region to a fourth tier, that includes support for pervasive devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs).

Resource Manager is installed on a Tivoli server and the gateways. A resource gateway connects resources — the pervasive devices — with the endpoint in the Tivoli environment. In this release, the Web Gateway component is used as the resource gateway.

You can use the Resource Manager, together with the Software Distribution, Inventory, and Web Gateway components, to:

  • Add or remove pervasive devices
  • Provide access to devices for software distribution
  • Provide access to devices for inventory operations
  • Customize devices

The Web Gateway component, which acts as the resource gateway, uses protocol communications to connect pervasive devices to the Web Gateway component in the Tivoli environment.

Web Interface and Web Gateway

The Web Interface deployment service is a browser-based tool that you can use to install and manage various Tivoli Configuration Manager Web objects. The Web Interface has two components, a server component and an endpoint component. The server component pushes software packages, inventory profiles, and reference models from the Tivoli region to the Web Gateway component where they are stored until they are pulled by the endpoint component. The Software Distribution component, Inventory component, and Change Manager deployment service each have a Java™ plug-in that is registered with the Web Interface. These enable Tivoli configuration operations to be performed using the Web Interface. The IBM WebSphere Application Server and IBM Tivoli Access Manager are required for the Web Gateway component.

Using the Web Interface, an end user can access the Web Gateway component and:

  • Install and verify software packages
  • Run inventory scans
  • View and synchronize reference models

Linux Support

IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager V4.2 now supports Linux systems as Tivoli servers, gateways, and endpoints. SuSE Linux and Red Hat Linux are supported on both Intel® and IBM eServer zSeries™ systems.

Packaged Formats Support

This release of IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager has extended its support of ISVs package formats by adding support for Redhat RPM, AIX® Installp, and Solaris PkgAdd that can now be imbedded in a Software Package with no need for external scripting.

Support for Administrative GUIs on any Windows® System

The following GUI tools can now be installed on a Windows system. This Windows system no longer has to be a managed node in the Tivoli environment. The administrator using these tools will only be prompted to enter their user ID and password once.

  • Distribution Status Console
  • Activity Plan Monitor
  • Activity Plan Editor
  • Change Manager
  • Inventory Profile Manager

Multicasting Support

Multicasting support is provided by Tivoli Management Framework V4.1. Multicasting allows you to broadcast a software distribution to multiple receivers. The data is only sent on the network once and the distribution time is independent of the number of receivers. Multicasting can significantly reduce the network bandwidth required to perform large-scale software distribution operations and can be turned on or off by distribution. It can be used to load the software depots or can be used between the gateways and the targets for a software distribution.

Tivoli Enterprise Data Warehouse Support

The Tivoli Enterprise Data Warehouse is included with IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager V4.2. Tivoli Configuration Manager will load a subset of its software distribution and inventory data into the Tivoli Enterprise Data Warehouse. The following reports will be provided with Tivoli Configuration Manager:

  • Failed software distribution operations by package
  • Success rate for distribution operations by package
  • Software packages in a failure to verify status
  • Failed distribution operation by workstation
  • Distribution failures related to package size
  • Failed operations history by distribution ID
  • Software distribution operation results by subscriber
  • Software distribution operation results by network address

Change Manager Usability Enhancements

  • Command Line interfaces available for Change Manager commands
  • Byte level differencing can be exploited from Change Manager tool
  • The administrator can automatically generate a reference model starting from a sample machine
  • The administrator can create multiple root models in the Change Manager database

Activity Planner Usability Enhancements

  • Condition types in a plan can now be Completion, Success, or Failure on All, Targets, or Depots
  • An administrator can now cancel, pause, or resume an activity plan for a subset of the target of a distribution
  • An administrator may now update fields in an activity plan that has been submitted but not started
  • Automatic generation of a recovery plan as a subset of a failed parent plan
  • Target resolution for a distribution can occur at plan creation, plan submission, or activity submission time

Data Moving Enhancement

The Data Moving facility has been enhanced to allow users to transfer multiple files or directories from a Tivoli server to a set of endpoints or from one Tivoli endpoint to another.

Improved Integration between Inventory and Software Distribution Components

  • When building a software package with the Software Package Editor, an administrator can now map a software package to one or more inventory signatures.
  • The list of software installed on a system is updated in the server database during two phases: at distribution time or after an inventory software scan.
  • The administrator can now perform inventory operations from the Activity Planner or Change Manager tools.

Inventory Enhancements

  • Signature packages now allow administrators to map multiple software signatures into a single signature package which allows you to detect a suite of software or a reference model
  • Support for SMBIOS, a standard interface for gathering systems management information from hardware systems, can provide the following information:
    • Motherboard Vendor-Model
    • System Vendor-Model
    • BIOS Version and date
    • System Serial Number
    • Motherboard Serial Number
    • Desktop Chassis Serial Number
    • Asset Tag ID
    • Universal Unique Identifier
    • Chassis Type
    • CPU Bus speed
    • Memory modules: type, speed, size, maximum capacity (RIMM, DIMM, SDRAM)
  • Endpoint Record Management tool to prevent the same machine from being scanned and recorded multiple times in the inventory database
  • Scan cancel command to stop a specific inventory scan or all inventory scans that are in progress
  • Before script function allows a script to be run before a scan
  • Inventory Database APIs insulate users' applications from changes to the Inventory database schema

IBM Tivoli Framework V4.1 Enhancements

Multicast and Depot Service Integration with MDist2

The Depot Service is a new component that can manage the population of a distribution depot and the handing off of distributions to and from MDist2. The Depot Service can be deployed on any managed node and its receivers can be deployed on managed nodes or endpoints. This makes multicast possible for preloading MDist2 depots and for sending data from a gateway to its endpoints.

Enablement for Popup on Distribution Receipt

A new exception-handling infrastructure ensures applications have the ability to properly trigger actions based on the user's decision regarding the receipt of a distribution. This will allow endpoint methods to access a Windows desktop in order to present a dialog for accepting/canceling/deferring a distribution.

HTTP Service with Standard HTTP Server

IBM Tivoli Framework provided HTTP access to TME® in the form of "UserLink" via the "Spider" service. With this release, the Spider service will be replaced by a standard servlet-based model. Existing UserLink content provided by previous versions of TME applications will work as-is.

Multiple Endpoints per Machine

While Tivoli has internally leveraged the capability of many endpoints to be installed on a single machine, this capability has not been officially supported in customer environments until this release.

Simple Payload Encryption

DES encryption is employed on the data portion of messages sent between a Gateway and its endpoints. This will provide data privacy for endpoint communications.

Microsoft Installer Packaging for TMA

An MSI install package for the TMA will allow administrators to get the agent automatically deployed to endpoints. Customers leveraging Active Directory can leverage GPO and have the TMA automatically installed the first time that a machine logs into the network. Thus, any new machines (Win2000 and later) defined to the network (directory), can automatically have the Tivoli agent deployed.

Program Number/Feature Fulfillment

Previously announced program number/feature fulfillment ordering information for IBM Tivoli Management Framework is unchanged by this announcement. For customers on earlier releases who want to separately migrate the Tivoli Management Framework and need to obtain it as a stand-alone offering through Program Number Fulfillment, can do so from IBM Sales Specialists through the previously announced process. Refer to Software Announcement 201-094 , dated April 10, 2001, for details on this ordering.

Software Maintenance

Software Maintenance is included with each product authorization acquired. Software Maintenance provides an easy and effective way by which you have access, during the coverage period, to eligible new versions and releases and to remote technical support for your covered products.

The technical support included in Software Maintenance provides remote support during normal business hours in your country or location as well as access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for mission-critical (Severity 1) problems.

With Software Maintenance, you receive the following technical support benefits:

  • Telephone access and/or electronic access via the Web to an IBM Customer Support Center.
  • Support for routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions and code-related problems.
  • Support during normal country business hours, namely prime shift hours, Monday through Friday, excluding national or statutory holidays.
  • Support for mission-critical (Severity 1) problems during non-prime shift hours, namely all hours outside normal country business hours including national and/or statutory holidays.
  • Two-hour response time objective during prime shift for voice and electronic submission. The response objective for critical/emergency problems during offshift is also two hours.
  • Access to hints, tips, and frequently asked questions.
  • Access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Open Authorized Technical Caller list to submit problems to IBM Support Centers on your behalf. Open to any number of technical specialists within your IS organization. Each caller must be registered through the IBM problem submission Web site in order to submit problems. Problem submission is handled by the Site Technical Contact as listed on the Passport Advantage enrollment form.
  • eCare for Software is an initiative designed to enhance your electronic support experience by providing the following advantages:
    • Single view of IBM distributed software that includes easy/integrated access to the following information and functions:
      • Marketing
      • Technical

    • Advanced search capabilities.
    • A single interface to the IBM problem submission/management system for IBM distributed software.

Software Maintenance renewals offer you favorable pricing to continue your coverage without interruption. Passport Advantage allows you to have a common anniversary date for Software Maintenance renewals, which can simplify management and budgeting for eligible new versions and releases (and for related technical support) for your covered products. The anniversary date, established at the start of your Passport Advantage Agreement, recurs on an annual basis while your Passport Advantage Agreement remains in effect. However, regardless of when Software Maintenance is acquired, the coverage period for Software Maintenance is always up to the anniversary date specified in the acquisition.

Refer to the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement and to the IBM Software Maintenance Handbook for specific terms relating to, and a more complete description of, technical support provided through Software Maintenance.
