Software Announcement 202-236 September 24, 2002 IBM WebSphere Studio Workload Simulator for z/OS and OS/390 An Automated Test Tool for Load-Testing Web ServersAt a GlanceWebSphere Studio Workload Simulator:
For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: LE001). OverviewWebSphere® Studio Workload Simulator conducts stress, performance, regression, and capacity planning tests. It can simulate multiple Internet browsers to test Web servers. This eliminates the need for using large numbers of "real" ("live") users to generate Web traffic. Almost anything that a user can do at a browser, WebSphere Studio Workload Simulator can do faster, more reliably, and typically for less cost. WebSphere Studio Workload Simulator consists of two components:
You can use the "virtual users" created by WebSphere Studio Workload Simulator to validate any Web-serving environment. Key PrerequisitesOne of the following:
A Windows 2000 or Windows XP workstation, with a Microsoft Internet Explorer browser V5.x, or later DescriptionIn e-business, transaction volumes can fluctuate rapidly. A sudden, unplanned increase in transaction volumes can tax the traffic-handling capabilities of the Web-serving environment. The profitability of the enterprise can be seriously impacted. WebSphere Studio Workload Simulator is used for load-testing and for validating an infrastructure that is capable of handling production-level workloads. WebSphere Studio Workload Simulator enables actual programs to operate as they would under actual conditions. The evaluation can start with a low volume of traffic and proceed in an orderly manner to a high-volume level. Because programs and associated hardware are integral parts of the simulation process, WebSphere Studio Workload Simulator provides an approximation of the true operational environment. WebSphere Studio Workload Simulator helps reduce testing time and testing resources while improving the thoroughness of testing. It provides repeatability for functional testing and regression testing, large volumes of Web traffic for stress testing, and reporting capabilities for system performance testing.
WebSphere Studio Workload Simulator has a graphical, Windows-based user
interface through which you can create and edit test scripts, control the
execution of the test, and analyze test results. The controller also
features a "capture" function, which helps you generate test scripts
automatically and quickly.
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act
WebSphere Studio Workload Simulator is capable as of
October 25, 2002, when used in accordance with IBM's associated
documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508
of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used
with the product properly interoperates with it.
Value Unit Based PricingValue Unit based pricing will help to align the prices of these products to the principle of the PSLC pricing curve, which provides for a lower price per MSU (millions of service units per hour) for larger capacities. There is also a price benefit when customers grow their capacity. Additional capacity will be based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) the customer has already installed, for example, additional capacity will not be priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the capacity that is already installed.
Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be
exchanged/interchanged/aggregated with Value Units of another product.
International Program License Agreement (IPLA) and Subscription and Support ConsiderationsIPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to, an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license. Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made. Product PositioningWebSphere Studio Workload Simulator is a component of the Application Development Tools portfolio for WebSphere for z/OS. The other components are WebSphere Studio Asset Analyzer for z/OS and WebSphere Studio Enterprise Developer. These tools offer customers a solution that spans the application lifecycle, and provide application developers with powerful tools to help improve productivity and effectiveness during development, testing, and deployment of new and existing applications on the z/OS platform. WebSphere Studio Workload Simulator for z/OS is used prior to deploying an application into a production environment.

The products in this announcement have one charge unit Value Units. Value Units for IBM 9672 Processors will be based upon the full capacity of these systems. This is applicable to all S/390®-based systems that are measured on MSU capacity. Information on MSU capacities can be found in the IBM System/370, System/390® and zSeries Machine Exhibit (Z125-3901).
Value Units for IBM There will be a tool available that provides support for transforming the MSU-based capacities of S/390 systems to new Value Units by calculating the applicable number of Value Units for a given number of MSUs. Translation from MSUs to Value Units Example
MSUs Value Units/MSU
Base 1-3 1.00
Tier A 4-45 .45
Tier B 46-175 .36
Tier C 176-315 .27
Tier D 316+ .20
Note: For the actual translation from MSUs to Value Units for this product, refer below. Ordering Example The total number of Value Units is calculated according to the following example. If the customer has installed 1,200 MSUs, the applicable Value Units would be: Translation from MSUs to Value Units
MSUs * Value Units/MSU = Value Units
Base 3 * 1.00 = 3.00
Tier A 42 * .45 = 18.90
Tier B 130 * .36 = 46.80
Tier C 140 * .27 = 37.80
Tier D 885 * .20 = 177.00
Total 1,200 284
When calculating the total number of Value Units, the sum is to be rounded up to the next integer.
1 Value Unit 250 Value Units Example: For a product running on machines with 1,200 MSUs requiring 284 Value Units, order the feature number for "1 Value Unit," quantity 34 and the feature number for "250 Value Units," quantity 1. Value Units for non MSU-based S/390 Processors MP3000 Models
H30 = 6.00 Value Units
H50 = 8.00 Value Units
H70 = 12.00 Value Units
P/390, R/390, IBM 3006 = 2.00 Value Units
Basic License: To order, specify the program number, feature number 9001 for asset registration, and the one-time charge (OTC) feature number. Also specify the feature number of the desired distribution medium. To suppress shipment of media, select the license-only option in CFSW. Translation from MSUs to Value Units
