Software Announcement 202-218 September 24, 2002 IBM WebSphere Host Publisher V4 for zSeries Provides the WebSphere Server Solution for Web-to-Host IntegrationAt a Glance
Enhancements in Version 4
For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: LE001). OverviewIBM WebSphere® Host Publisher provides a quick and easy way to implement e-business by extending legacy applications to Web browser users and new WebSphere applications. WebSphere Host Publisher can be used to increase sales and reduce costs through applications such as Web self-service. The ability to integrate multiple back-end applications into a single Web page, giving end users the appearance of a single new application, coupled with HTML Web page delivery for the broadest possible reach, make Host Publisher the ideal solution for extending legacy applications to Web users. WebSphere Host Publisher can significantly accelerate the time to market and reduce the expense of new WebSphere application development projects which require legacy access and integration. Host Publisher Studio can be used to programmatically generate the Java Beans or Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs) needed to provide legacy applications access to new WebSphere projects. This eliminates the need for Java developers to become legacy experts and enables limited Java developer resources to be focused on the new Web application function being developed. WebSphere Host Publisher has provided a leading-edge solution for extending existing applications to Web users. However, because the industry has evolved, providing access to Web browser users is no longer sufficient. Today's more-sophisticated e-businesses need a consolidated Web-portal-based solution for access to all of the Enterprise Information Systems their employees and customers need. WebSphere Host Publisher has also evolved, and Version 4 provides a WebSphere Portal portlet that enables all of your 3270 and 5250 legacy content to quickly and easily be provided as new portal content, delivering a single enterprise-wide view to your end user communities. WebSphere Host Publisher supports applications written for 3270, 5250, Virtual Terminal (VT), Java, and databases that provide a Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) interface. It supports an HTML-browser and does not require specific Java-enabled browsers or changes to the existing legacy applications. WebSphere Host Publisher is part of IBM's comprehensive portfolio of WebSphere e-business solutions designed to deliver maximum investment protection and return on investment (ROI) as your e-business needs evolve. Key Prerequisites
Description
IBM WebSphere Host Publisher provides a quick and easy way to implement e-business by extending the reach of mission-critical applications to Web browser users and new WebSphere applications, requiring no changes to the existing applications. Broad legacy application support combined with enterprise-class scalability, security, and availability features make Host Publisher the ideal solution for new e-business deployments. Legacy application types supported include 3270, 5250, and VT applications and databases that provide a Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) interface such as IBM DB2 Universal Database®, Oracle, and Sybase, as well as any API-based Java application or bean. Whether your objective is reducing costs or increasing revenue through Web-to-host deployments, or accelerating new e-business application development projects, Host Publisher delivers the capabilities to get there quickly, and to grow as your e-business grows. WebSphere Host Publisher provides the answer for HTML delivery of host information to end users and includes features specifically designed to address the Internet environment, for example:
WebSphere Host Publisher provides the answer for accessing legacy applications from new Web applications and delivers a wide range of options for accelerating the time to market for new Web application projects requiring legacy access and integration:
Host Publisher consists of two major components:
Host Publisher StudioHost Publisher Studio is a collection of task-oriented, easy-to-use GUIs that assist the Web-application builder in managing and creating Web-to-host projects. It uses task-oriented prompts to guide the user through the creation process, minimizing or eliminating the need for programming to accomplish these projects. Studio automatically generates a Java Bean, called an Integration Object, which encapsulates legacy interactions and data retrieval. In addition, Studio can generate a corresponding Enterprise Java Bean to access these legacy systems. New with Host Publisher V4 is the ability to selectively enable legacy applications and services as new Web Services. You can use Studio to generate a fully customizable HTML Web page for modeling interaction with the Integration Objects and presenting the resulting data. The HTML Web page can be enhanced with Web authoring tools, such as WebSphere Studio, to meet corporate guidelines on style and image. Once the Web page is completed, you can publish it to Host Publisher Server for production access by end users. Host Publisher Studio is provided on a separate CD assembly and runs on Windows® 98, Windows Me, Windows NT®, Windows 2000, and Windows XP operating systems.
The applications created with the common Host Publisher Studio will run
unchanged in all supported environments: AIX®, Sun Solaris, Windows,
IBM Host Publisher ServerHost Publisher Server provides the runtime environment for supporting Web applications created with Host Publisher Studio. The run-time components include:
WebSphere Host Publisher requires and exploits the leading-edge WebSphere Application Server V4 run-time environment. The combination of WebSphere Application Server and Host Publisher delivers an unparalleled solution for enterprise-class legacy integration with new WebSphere e-business applications and host application extension to new Web users. WebSphere Host Publisher V4 brings J2EE compliance to Web-to-host implementations. J2EE provides value by significantly reducing the cost and complexity of developing and deploying multitier solutions, resulting in services that can be rapidly deployed and easily enhanced. A production use license for IBM WebSphere Application Server, V4.0.1 for z/OS and OS/390 is not included with WebSphere Host Publisher V4 but must be acquired with a separate product order.
Note:
Host Publisher V4 does include a separate CD for the WebSphere
Application Server, Advanced Developer Single Server Edition V4.0. The
license associated with this program is for development use only and is
not for production use. You are limited to the use of this program for
internal evaluation and for the development, demonstration, and testing
of applications which use this program.
Scalability and High AvailabilityWebSphere Host Publisher exploits the load-balancing and high-availability capabilities of the WebSphere Application Server. WebSphere Application Server provides support for running multiple Server Regions on one or more systems in a WebSphere installation. Running multiple Server Regions can provide the following benefits:
SecurityWebSphere Host Publisher delivers a broad range of security options. On the Web side of a Host Publisher implementation, all of the existing industry-standard Web security mechanisms for securing access and authentication are enabled. This includes SSL for data encryption and client authentication. To existing legacy applications, Host Publisher will appear as a standard user of the application, which enables you to leverage your existing legacy security systems (such as RACF®) on IBM zSeries, to control access to these critical resources.
A critically important requirement when extending legacy applications to
the general public is not just making the application easily available
and easy to use, but controlling which application content and services
the user can access. Host Publisher provides exacting control over which
application options are exposed to the end user through its Studio
navigational facilities. In addition, because the end user is never
directly connected to the legacy application (the end user connects to
Host Publisher which accesses the legacy system for the end user), the
potential for the end user to wander to other applications is virtually
eliminated.
Web ServicesWeb Services provide an open industry-standard way for applications to connect and interact on the Web. Web Services enable businesses to publish interfaces to their business processes, which streamlines interaction with their organizational value net. It allows multiple divisions, trading partners, contractors, customers, and suppliers to connect business processes and create cross-enterprise transactions. New with WebSphere Host Publisher V4 is the ability to quickly and easily extend your legacy applications, which can be thought of as legacy services, as new Web Services. WebSphere Host Publisher Integration Objects and Enterprise Java Beans are now enabled as new Web Services. Host Publisher Studio has been enhanced to provide a selectable Web Services option so your existing Host Publisher skills can be leveraged in creating new Web Services. In addition, Host Publisher Studio now generates new Web Services-specific Java methods developed to optimize network performance and response time when deploying legacy services as new Web Services across a wide area network. WebSphere Host Publisher is used in conjunction with WebSphere Studio Application Developer to create Web Services, build the corresponding Web Service Description Language (WSDL), register the Web Services within the Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) registry, and deploy the Web Service via WebSphere Application Server. A key strength of the Web Services industry standard is that existing back-end implementations do not need to be changed. Your well-tested and operational core information technology structure can be reused without the effort, scheduling impact, and risk that would be involved in rework. Support for the new Host Publisher Web Services enables you to get there quickly while leveraging your existing investment in Host Publisher skills.
Support for Web Services has been implemented in a number of IBM software
products, including WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Studio.
Now WebSphere Host Publisher enables you to develop Integration Objects
and EJBs that can become parts of Web Services and deployed in the
WebSphere environment.
WebSphere PortalThe WebSphere Portal provides a secure, single point of interaction with diverse information, business processes, and people, personalized to a user's needs and responsibilities. This personalized single point of access to all necessary information resources reduces information overload, accelerates productivity, and increases Web-site usage. Among the most important enterprise information resources are the 3270 and 5250 legacy information systems that drive today's businesses. New with WebSphere Host Publisher V4 is a Host Publisher portlet that enables legacy content and services to be extended quickly and easily as new portal content. This will enable you to incorporate your huge inventory of legacy application content within the personalized single point of access provided by the WebSphere Portal. The Host Publisher portlet delivers the state management capabilities needed to enable complex interaction with existing applications while enabling the navigational ease-of-use characteristics of the WebSphere Portal. For consistency with many other WebServer Portal portlets, the Host Publisher portlet will be delivered via download from the WebSphere Portal portlet Web site at: Product PositioningWebSphere Host Publisher is a core component of IBM's market-leading WebSphere Host Integration Solution. It provides the HTML and WebSphere application enablement solution within this offering and complements IBM's WebSphere Host On-Demand capability to quickly and easily extend host applications to Web users through its Java-based emulator. WebSphere Host Publisher focuses on consolidating multiple existing applications, without modification, to present a single integrated view to a Web browser. This leverages security, scalability, and availability features that are essential for the deployment of e-business applications. It delivers a quick and easy way for companies to implement e-business applications by extending existing applications to the Web. It is primarily intended for the legacy extension space with little or no new business logic. WebSphere tools, like WebSphere Studio, may be used to add new business logic to a Host Publisher implementation if needed. WebSphere Host Publisher's ability to integrate with IBM's Java-based connectors, such as MQSeries®, delivers unlimited reach for customers as their back-end application needs change and expand over time. WebSphere Host Publisher is part of IBM's comprehensive WebSphere portfolio of leading-edge e-business solutions and provides additional value-add when used in conjunction with other members of the WebSphere family. Examples include its use:

Performance Considerations:
IBM WebSphere Host Publisher V4 is a Java product and performance
is a function of the speed of the network, the processing power of the
workstation or server, as well as the level of the Java Development Kit
(JDK) being used. WebSphere Host Publisher ships its own version of the
JDK for its use and will periodically update it to newer levels after
performing sufficient compatibility and performance tests. It is not
recommended that newer levels of the JDK be used with WebSphere Host
Publisher V4 without first consulting IBM Service.
