At a Glance

WebSphere Everyplace Subscription Manager (WESM) V4.1 delivers fundamental subscriber and service management features to wireline service providers, independent of their business model or delivery architecture. Key functions and features include:

  • Broadband access via Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) with Equal Access capabilities to allow subscribers to choose their Internet service provider (ISP)
  • Support for network storage services, SoHo Web hosting, and other value added services such as on-demand video
  • Virtual service provider support for wholesale business models
  • Fully integrated Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) with two-way proxy capability and user definable authentication exits enabling service providers to integrate custom business procedures in the RADIUS process flow
  • Ability to subscribe to multiple service offerings, either as individual services or as part of predefined bundles
  • Integration with Portal Infranet billing and CyberSource credit card authorization

Overview

The fast and demanding growth of the Internet has left service providers fighting to provide competitive, scalable, state-of-the-art services. They have had to write and maintain costly custom programs to enroll their customers, provision services, and deliver content.

WebSphere® Everyplace™ Subscription Manager (WESM) V4.1 offers a one application solution. It can create and manage service offerings, while delivering a mature, industry-proven infrastructure for broadband and dial-up service providers.

WESM can host multiple service providers simultaneously each with unique services, branding, and marketing. For each hosted provider, WESM can deliver the necessary functions and features to enroll, authenticate, service, and support their customers.

Enrollment

  • Customers enroll using a web-based guided self-enrollment application or by contacting a customer service representative.
  • Business and consumer subscriber hierarchies are supported through multiple billing and reporting levels, helping to ensure easy management of corporate and consumer accounts.

Authentication

  • Fully integrated RADIUS provides authentication, authorization, and accounting functions for up to 20 million subscribers.

Service and Support

  • WESM can collect fully customizable subscriber data, associate subscribers with their chosen services, and initiate the provisioning process to enable service delivery. Subscribers can manage their personal data and subscriptions by using the security-rich self-care component or by calling customer service.
  • The base-level service delivered by WESM broadband and dial-up. Additional services such as e-mail and Web hosting are easily defined and delivered.

Integration

  • Built-in integration with lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) can enable integration with external, legacy applications.
  • Portal Infranet and the CyberSource Internet Commerce Suite are pre-integrated to provide billing and payment authorization functionality.
  • WESM can also enhance WebSphere Portal by delivering the support for millions of portal subscribers to access for-fee services.
  • WESM can be integrated with the Redback SMS platform of subscriber management systems enabling the provisioning of value added IP Services; as demonstrated by the joint IBM and Redback Networks' Rapid IP Services for e-Business Solutions (RISES).

Description

WESM V4.1 is designed to meet the specific and unique needs of service providers independent of whether they operate a wholesale or retail model, or operate in the broadband or narrowband markets. WESM includes the following functions that were included in Tivoli® Internet Services Manager V1.1, which is being replaced by WESM:

  • Subscriber account enrollment, provisioning, and management
  • Internet access management
  • Subscriber self care
  • Customer service representative interface
  • Integration with leading Internet billing products
  • Consumer and business subscriber support
  • Customizable interfaces and data elements to support Virtual ISP/Wholesale business models
  • Industry standard RADIUS fully integrated with subscriber database
  • Scalable infrastructure supporting high availability for up to tens of millions of subscribers
  • LDAP and Tivoli Access Manager integration
  • Standard marketing, churn, and reliability reports
  • Flexible programming toolkits enabling extension and integration with existing systems and processes

WESM offers additional capabilities, which differentiate it from previous and competing offerings, including:

  • Multiple services per subscriber

This release of WESM can enable subscribers to sign up for multiple services simultaneously, such as:

    • Base services that provide network access, such as DSL and dial-up
    • Subscription services that are paid for on a monthly recurring basis, such as e-mail and storage
    • On-demand services that are paid for at the time of delivery, such as streaming video or online gaming

WESM can enable service providers to mix and match a single access service with multiple subscription services so they can offer them as a bundle to their subscribers. Individual services can also be combined to meet the subscriber's personal requirements.

Initial service selection takes place during the enrollment process. You can add or subtract services at a later time using the Subscriber Self Care application, or by contacting the service provider's customer service. Order status and history provide both subscribers and the customer service representatives with sufficient data to fully manage and monitor the service selection and delivery process.

  • Flexible service provisioning

WESM has a simple yet flexible provisioning subsystem, which can be extended to support new and existing service delivery models. Every significant event in WESM can generate a provisioning transaction; which can help ensure that external systems are synchronized with the WESM database. Provisioning agents are associated with specific transactions and complete the activities required to deliver the service to the subscriber. WESM includes a number of provisioning agents by default, and additional agents can be built quickly and easily using the provided sample code and documentation.

  • User selectable service provider enrollment

To help service providers meet proposed Equal Access regulations, WESM can offer a choice of Internet service providers (ISP) as the first step in the enrollment process. After the ISP is chosen, WESM can present a specific, branded enrollment process that includes tailored ISP service offerings.

  • Broadband DSL extensions

WESM can now deliver broadband capabilities through the RISES solution. Access to the value-added services is provided through tight integration with the Friendly Technologies FriendlyPPPoE client. This client interoperates with Redback's SMS and the WESM RADIUS to support multiple PPPoE sessions on a single client machine.

The FriendlyPPPoE client supports multiple logon profiles and can be programmed to start up DSL sessions automatically. The client also supports the HURL protocol, which sends a specific URL to the subscriber's browser at session start up. Using this functionality, service providers can force subscribers to visit specific web pages every time they logon. Additional network hardware can also be employed to keep subscribers "held captive" to specific web pages. To support usage billing for new broadband-based services, WESM can record session usage based on time used and data delivered.

  • WebSphere Portal integration

WESM enhances the WebSphere Portal by fully integrating its service provider infrastructure with the powerful personalization and aggregation functions of the portal. The IBM portal framework and WESM can be used to provide consumer and business portals that can incorporate for-fee services. Orders for on-demand services, such as movies, can be placed using custom designed portlets that communicate with the WESM provisioning subsystem to help ensure real-time service delivery, authorization, and billing transactions.

The WESM database can be used to personalize a subscriber's portal pages and the services that are being offered. In order to simplify the end user experience, the WebSphere Portal and WESM integration support multiple methods of single sign-on. In most cases, after subscribers have proven their identities, they will not need to be challenged again, regardless of which part of the solution they access. When a specific challenge is required for business practice reasons, WESM uses the same credentials as the integrated RADIUS. Using the same optimized, relational database (DB2® or Oracle) as all other WESM components, it can deliver powerful single sign-on functionality. This means the subscriber needs only to remember a single user-name and address.
