IBM Content Manager Key Enhancements

Enhanced Enterprise Scalability: In addition to the client-server architecture introduced by its predecessors, Content Manager V8.1 unveils a fully Web-enabled, scalable, extensible, multitier, distributed architecture that includes the following:

  • New Library Server — the central source for indexing, describing, locating, organizing, and managing enterprise content. It supports the Content Manager data model, controls access to content, and manages transactions with referential integrity.
  • New Resource Managers (formerly known as Object Servers) — specialized repositories optimized to manage the storage, retrieval, and archival of enterprise content. Documents, images, and multimedia content are represented as resources stored in Resource Managers. The Content Manager VideoCharger Feature delivers multimedia support.
  • Enhanced Mid-tier Server — the Web-exploiting broker that mediates between the browser client and the Library Server. It provides the enhanced Content Manager API toolkit and manages connections to the Library Server and to the Resource Managers.
  • Enhanced eClient — the browser-based thin client that provides the GUI to the Content Manager and related systems. The eClient communicates through the mid-tier server and/or directly to Resource Managers, enabling fast and secure delivery of objects.
  • Enhanced Client for Windows — the desktop client that exploits the client-server architecture, providing out-of-the-box capabilities for supporting high-volume, high-performance, production-level document applications. ODMA support is also available in Content Manager V8.1.
  • Full utilization of industry standards and Internet protocols — including HTTP, FTP, RTSP, JDBC, SQL, and so on.

This modular architecture is optimized to support a full range of configurations from small departmental workgroups to configurations that span geographically dispersed organizations, running diverse hardware platforms, with hundreds and potentially thousands, of users connected through the intranet/Internet, while maintaining secure central management control.

With Content Manager V8.1, IBM introduces platform support for Sun Solaris.

Enhanced Robust and Open Application Development Framework

  • Fully mirrored C++ and Java APIs — each set optimized for performance and usability. Both sets of API's have been enhanced to be more network-efficient. Content Manager V8.1 offers significantly reduced communications overhead.
  • Java Beans that cover a comprehensive set of Content Manager V8.1 capabilities for rapid application development. Bean enhancements include:
    • Support for Content Manager V8.1 functions, such as versioning, links, child components, and document routing
    • Annotation functions and new conversion functions for the Document Services Bean
    • New servlet and tag library to more easily create custom applications
  • All Content Manager Servers (mid-tier server, Library Server and Resource Managers), the eClient, and all Java APIs are fully unicode-enabled.
  • Powerful query language (based on XPath) exploits the enhanced data model, including integrated parametric and text search, and versioning.
  • Direct access to information about documents, folders or other business objects is supported using SQL Select statements. Built-in security ensures that only those records to which the user is authorized will be returned.

Improved Performance

Content Manager V8.1 offers significant performance improvements in the following areas:

  • Optimized API sets
  • Enhanced Search Performance
    • Deeper integration of the search engine with the underlying database in the Library Server

Powerful, Enhanced Data Model

Advanced and flexible data modeling capabilities allow applications to readily represent real-world objects in the enterprise content environment, significantly reducing the application development effort. Content Manager V8.1 expands on the earlier data model to deliver a more powerful and expressive, XML-ready physical data model that can capture structural and relationship information across all types of content and its associated metadata or attributes.

  • Content Manager V8.1 data model supports multi-level, hierarchical structures that allow for the definition of complex metadata hierarchy and in relationships between content and its attributes, including multi-valued attributes. This model supports item-level versioning, covering both metadata as well as content.
  • Content Manager V8.1 allows custom applications to build more complex inter-item relationships with full referential integrity.
    • Extends the many-to-many link support to allow selective navigation of links by link item Ids and their attributes
    • Includes reference attribute, a new feature, that connects an item to any item of any type in the system
    • Supports foreign key, providing linkage and referential integrity with external data in DB2
  • Auto-foldering allows imported documents through the eClient, the Client for Windows, or the ODMA support to be organized automatically into folders by a specified attribute.
  • Granular support for resources in Content Manager V8.1 allows:
    • Resource sharing by multiple items
    • Resource-level metadata
    • Resource typing and classification
    • Resource-level access control

  • XPath-based query language allows applications to easily navigate the hierarchical model and explore inter-item relationships.

New Integrated Full-text Index and Search Capabilities:

New Integrated Full-text Index and Search Capabilities — provides full text search on text-type metadata attributes or text content. This allows customers to use attributes of any length, such as the abstract of a document, then later search for any word or combination of words within that text.

Enhanced Integrated and Resilient Enterprise-Scope Operations

Security

Content Manager V8.1 provides a complete, integrated, extensible, and secure control environment for managing and processing content, while leveraging industry standards such as, LDAP authentication, user exits, and tighter integration of access control.

System Administration

Content Manager V8.1 provides a single point of access for administering CM and EIP servers, users and groups, regardless of their location across an enterprise. This helps reduce operational costs and improves manageability.

Content Manager V8.1 delivers the following system administration enhancements:

  • Allows administration responsibilities to be distributed to sub-administrators with limited privileges and scope for Library Servers
  • Enhances multi-level logging and auditing capabilities.
  • Enables an ItemType to include an optional Retention Period. When items of that type are created, the expiration date is calculated, and may be used for removing Items when they are no longer required.
  • Eliminates the need for duplicate user with a single system administration client.
  • Enhances find and filter functions for user listings.
  • Support multiple servers on the same tree, enabling simultaneous administration of multiple servers.
  • Provides integration points with LDAP systems for user management and authentication.

Improved Document Routing Functionality

Content Manager V8.1 document routing functions support a formal, consistent and repeatable document routing process that enforces business rules along each step. Content Manager V8.1 Document Routing (formerly known as Content Manager Workflow) enhancements include:

  • Predefined flows with branching capability
  • Server user exits for work node entry/exit and overload
  • Collection points to wait for one or more items before proceeding
  • The concept of "work lists" to let users work from one or more work nodes at the same time

Security, Auditability, and Control

IBM Content Manager for Multiplatforms V8 uses the security and auditability features of the host hardware or software.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Ordering Information

IBM Content Manager for Multiplatforms V8 is a client server product which has two charge units: Server install and Concurrent User, with optionally priced features per Server for the Content Manager OnDemand PDF Indexer and Content Manager VideoCharger additional Server installs.

Content Manager V8.1 delivers a newly integrated offering. Refer to below for key changes and ordering recommendations.

  • All customers seeking to order new licenses of Content Manager V8.1, Content Manager OnDemand V7.1, and Content Manager VideoCharger V8.1, can now order these offerings through this the Content Manager V8.1 product.
  • Some Content Manager V7.1 and Content Manager OnDemand V7.1 products and media packs will remain available until formal withdrawals from marketing are announced.
  • Gateway licensing is no longer supported in Content Manager V8.1. Simple per-Server and per-Concurrent User licensing is supported in Content Manager V8.1, and all user access must be licensed according to the terms described below.
  • EIP Client Kit for Content Manager, previously a separately orderable product, is now part of the Content Manager V8.1 package.
  • Content Manager for OS/390® (V2.3), Content Manager ImagePlus for OS/390 (V3.1), and Content Manager OnDemand for OS/390 and z/OS™ (V7.1 or V2.1) customers who need the Content Manager eClient, and its prerequisite federated and/or direct search connectors, previously purchased via the EIP Client Kit for Content Manager, should purchase one Content Manager V8.1 Server license and media pack to obtain appropriate licensing and program media.

All orders for this product are placed through Passport Advantage.

  • You should order the appropriate number of License and Maintenance (one year or two years) authorizations that meet your requirements.
  • Media Packs must be ordered separately from Program licensing to receive shipment of the appropriate program media.
  • If you are currently licensed for Content Manager for Multiplatforms V7.1, your active Software Subscription or Maintenance entitles you to the new Content Manager for Multiplatforms V8.1. If you do not receive an automatic shipment of CM V8.1, you may call the Passport Advantage Maintenance/Subscription center and request shipment of the CM V8.1 media pack.
  • If you are currently licensed for Content Manager for Multiplatforms V7.1, or prior, and you are not on active Software Subscription or Maintenance, you may purchase Maintenance After License on the IBM Content Manager for Multiplatforms to become eligible or entitled to request the new Content Manager for Multiplatforms V8.1 media pack.
  • If you are currently licensed for Content Manager for Multiplatforms, and on active Software Subscription or Maintenance when our Subscription or Maintenance expires, you should order Maintenance Renewal to remain on active Maintenance (Subscription).

Content Manager Server

Your license to the Program entitles you to install one instance of one of the following solutions: Content Manager, Content Manager OnDemand, or the EIP Advanced Workflow program server. If you wish to install additional program server instances on the same or on additional physical servers or nodes, you must acquire additional Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs).

Definitions of an instance:

Content Manager

  • Each Content Manager Library Server is defined as one instance, and includes the right to install one Content Manager Resource Manager and one Content Manager VideoCharger server, each installed on the same or on a separate physical server or node.
  • Each additional Content Manager Resource Manager installed, after the first Resource Manager per Library Server, is defined as one instance.
  • Each additional Content Manager VideoCharger server installed must be licensed through the Content Manager VideoCharger Component.

Content Manager OnDemand

  • Each Content Manager OnDemand Library Server is defined as one instance, and includes the right to install one Content Manager OnDemand Object Server, each installed on the same or on a separate physical server or node.
  • Each additional Content Manager OnDemand Object Server installed, after the first Object Server per Library Server, is defined as one instance.

EIP Advanced Workflow

  • Each MQSeries Workflow Server, installed in conjunction with the EIP Advanced Workflow, is defined as one instance.

Content Manager Concurrent User

You must acquire an authorization for each Concurrent User. The number of concurrent users is defined as the maximum or peak number of users connected to the program servers at one time. Each user connection is considered to be active, and therefore concurrent, for 30 minutes after logon or any transaction against the server. If the user invokes any transaction activity within a 30 minute interval, they will continue to be considered an active concurrent user. If the connected user remains inactive for a period of greater than 30 minutes, they will no longer be considered an active concurrent user, until they re-establish an active connection by invoking a transaction against the server.

The number of actual concurrent users may not exceed the number authorized by the quantity of Concurrent User Licenses you have purchased. Each Content Manager Concurrent User license authorizes one individual user to connect to one Content Manager and/or Content Manager OnDemand program server across any of the following platforms: Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, OS/390, and z/OS.

The definition of a concurrent user includes all users, either within or outside your enterprise, who establish one or more connections to any Content Manager or Content Manager OnDemand program server. These connections may be either direct or through a surrogate or application server (using common techniques such as end user mapping or connection pooling). Employees, clients, partners, and Internet users who make a connection via either an application or client are all counted as concurrent users.

For example, if you have 300 users, and all of these users will interact with the program server once every 10 minutes, then you require 300 Concurrent User licenses. Each user is concurrent because they have made a transaction within the 30 minute window.

In another example, if you have 300 users, and all of these users will interact with the program server once every hour, with user transactions evenly balanced over the hour, it is expected you would require 150 Concurrent User licenses. Since each user is making only one transaction during the hour period, only half the users would have made a transaction within the 30 minute window and would be inactive at other times.

If the user access pattern cannot be predicted at time of initial purchase, then the best estimate of Users and activity levels should be calculated, and after implementation, actual usage patterns should be monitored to validate licensing requirements versus authorizations, so that you can true-up the license periodically. To support this activity validation, IBM provides monitoring tools for individual user connectivity to the servers in the program server logs. If connections are made via an application server or Web server, where individuals are not directly logged onto the servers, you should implement a monitoring tool such as WebSphere Site Analyzer to track the number of concurrent users who are accessing the servers via your front end application.

Content Manager VideoCharger Component

Each license of the Content Manager VideoCharger Component entitles you to install one Content Manager VideoCharger server. A separate media pack exists for this item. It is possible to order only the VideoCharger Component of Content Manager.

Content Manager OnDemand PDF Indexer

Your license to the Content Manager OnDemand PDF Indexer entitles you to install and use the PDF Indexer component to support definition and capture of PDF data streams on one Content Manager OnDemand Server (Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX, HP-UX or Sun Solaris). If you wish to capture PDF data streams on additional Content Manager OnDemand Servers, you must purchase additional Proofs of Entitlement. This item does not have a separate media pack.

Content Manager IWPM V2.3

Note: The following provides an update on newly added support for Windows XP desktops for the Content Manager ImagePlus Workstation Program (IWPM), used by many Content Manager ImagePlus for OS/390 and Content Manager for iSeries customers:

Content Manager IWPM V2.3 now includes support for Windows XP, and is available via download only from the IBM FTP site and requires a Content Manager IWPM V2.3 or Client Access License for each instance or desktop. There is no physical CD available for Content Manager IWPM XP installations. You must purchase an IWPM upgrade or an ImagePlus for OS/390 Client Access upgrade. Contact your IBM representative or:

for ordering information and cost.

ImagePlus for OS/390 customers: If you are installing IWPM code to acquire an upgraded or new copy of IWPM/NT, IWPM/Win2000, or IWPM/XP, you must be licensed for each copy. To acquire this user entitlement, you must order the correct number of Content Manager ImagePlus for OS/390 Client Access Licenses to match the number of IWPM licenses you require. The IWPM code is included in this access charge. Refer to Software Announcement 200-259 , dated August 1, 2000, for further details.

IBM eServer iSeries customers: If you are installing IWPM code to acquire an upgraded or new copy of IWPM/NT, IWPM/Win2000, or IWPM/XP, you must be licensed for each copy. To acquire this user entitlement, you must order the correct number of IWPM licenses to match the number of users. Refer to Software Announcement 200-258 , dated August 1, 2000, for further details.

Content Manager IWPM V2.3 Windows XP support is available via download only from the IBM FTP site and requires a Content Manager IWPM V2.3 or Client Access License for each instance or desktop.
