Description

CICS TG provides a key e-business enabling function. It provides a robust, scalable, easy-to-use, and secure complement to a Web Server or Web Application Server enabling multiple users at Web browsers to access business-critical applications running on IBM CICS servers (including CICS Transaction Servers and TXSeries™ servers). It uses the latest technologies, both HTTP and Java based, to link the open world of Web browsers on the Internet (or an intranet) to the power, flexibility, integrity, and robustness of enterprise computing and to business-critical applications running on CICS.

CICS TG V5 is provided for the Windows, AIX®, IBM z/OS, HP-UX, Linux on IBM eServer zSeries and Solaris platforms. It is enabled to run on the same system as the Web Server, or on a separate gateway server and is capable of supporting a large number of concurrent users.

CICS TG V5 provides programming interfaces in Java, C/C++, Visual Basic, and COBOL, through both low-level and high-level, component-oriented interfaces. Java interfaces include support for a J2EE-compliant connector.

It supports Java applications or Java applets running on client systems attached to a CICS TG server via the same programming interfaces. However, the Java applet support is provided for compatibility with previous versions of CICS TG, and it is recommended that users migrate to a Java servlet solution. Java applet support may be removed in a future release of CICS TG. CICS TG V5 also provides a Terminal Servlet for rapid Web enablement to 3270 applications.

New in V5:

  • Supports JDK 1.3
    • including JSSE (Java Secure Sockets Extension) for 128-bit encryption
  • Supports J2EE Connector Architecture (J2C)
    • EPI and ECI (AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Windows NT®/2000/XP Professional, Linux on zSeries)
    • ECI only, 2PC transactions & enhanced security (OS/390®)
    • async ECI calls also supported (all platforms)
  • Enhanced support for TCP62 (all platforms ex. OS/390)
    • Removes SNA dependency for connection to CICS
  • Improved performance for ECI data transfers via data streams truncated to application data length
  • Improved availability via support for ARM (Automatic Restart Manager) on OS/390
  • Improved serviceability with:
    • Enhanced logging
    • Logging of EXCI return codes on OS/390
  • Improved manageability with:
    • Dynamic control of tracing level

CICS Universal Client V5

CICS Universal Client V5 enables access from a single user workstation to the tried and trusted transactional capabilities of IBM CICS servers (including CICS Transaction Servers and TXSeries servers). Programming interfaces are provided in C/C++, Visual Basic, and COBOL.

It is provided for the Windows NT, 2000 and XP platforms.

Product Positioning

Many enterprises use multi-tiered configurations to implement e-business applications which serve their customers as end users.

These configurations typically consist of three physical tiers made up of the end-user browser, a Web server/Web application server, and a back-end Enterprise Information Server (EIS), although sometimes additional tiers are also used. The purpose of CICS TG is to provide efficient integration of middle tier application servers with CICS-based EISs. It achieves this by providing a multiuser gateway that supports programming interfaces on the same tier as the Web application server, for use by Web applications in Java and other languages. This enables customers to use existing assets and skills to build middle tier solutions in combination with their enterprise CICS systems, to achieve effective e-business solutions. CICS Transaction Gateway also provides an excellent environment for customers wishing to gain familiarity with Java programming, prior to using this in the host CICS environment.

CICS TG V5 enables customers to implement robust and efficient end-to-end configurations and, by supporting major server platforms, provides considerable flexibility in the configurations which may be adopted. It also enables customers to change configurations without modifying applications when operational reasons require this or make it desirable, for example to increase the scalability of a solution. The option to deploy CICS TG V5 on OS/390 or z/OS, supporting Web applications locally on OS/390 or z/OS, or remotely on a physical middle tier server, provides a configuration that enables high scalability and has been tested at transaction rates in excess of 1,000 transactions per second.

CICS TG V5 contains a superset of the functions offered in CICS Universal Client V5 and may be used to support multiuser integration applications written in C, C++, Visual Basic, and as Component Object Model (COM) objects.
