Overview

IBM WebSphere® Host Publisher can provide a quick and easy way to implement e-business by extending legacy applications to Web browser users and new WebSphere applications. WebSphere Host Publisher can be used to increase sales and reduce costs through applications such as Web self-service. Integrating multiple back-end applications into a single Web page (which appears to the end users as one new application) combined with HTML Web page delivery makes Host Publisher the ideal solution for extending legacy applications to end users.

WebSphere Host Publisher can significantly accelerate the time to market and can reduce the expense of new WebSphere application development projects which require legacy access and integration. Host Publisher Studio can be used to generate the Java™ Beans, EJBs, or Web services needed to provide legacy applications access to new WebSphere projects. This eliminates the need for Java developers to become legacy experts and enables them to focus on developing the new Web application functionality.

Previous versions of WebSphere Host Publisher provided a leading-edge solution for extending existing applications to Web users. However, the industry has evolved and providing access to Web browser users is no longer sufficient. Today's more-sophisticated e-businesses need a consolidated Web-portal based solution for access to Enterprise Information Systems their employees and customers need. WebSphere Host Publisher has also evolved, and V4 provides a WebSphere Portal portlet that enables all of your 3270 and 5250 legacy content to be provided as new portal content quickly and easily, delivering a single enterprise-wide view to your end users.

WebSphere Host Publisher supports applications written for 3270, 5250, Virtual Terminal (VT), Java, and databases that provide a Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) interface. It supports HTML-browsers and does not require specific Java-enabled browsers or changes to the existing legacy applications.

WebSphere Host Publisher is part of IBM's comprehensive portfolio of WebSphere e-business solutions designed to deliver maximum investment protection and return on investment as your e-business needs evolve.

Key Prerequisites

This product requires WebSphere Application Server V4.0.2 and one of the following operating systems supported by V4.0.2:

  • AIX®

Description

IBM WebSphere Host Publisher provides a quick and easy way to implement e-business by extending the reach of mission-critical applications to Web browser users and new WebSphere applications, requiring no changes to the existing applications. Broad legacy application support combined with enterprise class scalability, security, and availability features make Host Publisher the ideal solution for new e-business deployments. Supported legacy application types include 3270, 5250, and VT applications and databases that provide a Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) interface — such as IBM DB2 Universal Database®, Oracle and Sybase, as well as any API-based Java application or bean. Whether your objective is reducing costs or increasing revenue through Web-to-host deployments, or accelerating new e-business application development projects, Host Publisher delivers the capabilities to get there quickly, and to grow as your e-business grows.

WebSphere Host Publisher provides the answer for HTML delivery of host information to end users and includes features specifically designed to address the Internet environment, such as:

  • WebSphere Host Publisher does not require the browser to be Java-enabled.
  • The user interface is a familiar industry-standard Web page.
  • New WebSphere Portal Server support brings 3270 and 5250-legacy content into the consolidated user interface provided by enterprise portals.
  • Host Publisher provides application access to users unfamiliar with green screens and the location of input fields.
  • Composite application capability masks the complexity of host applications from Web browser users.
  • Extensive security options safeguard access to mission-critical host applications.
  • Access capabilities are extended beyond 3270 and 5250 to include Java, Java Database Connectivity, and Virtual Terminal.

WebSphere Host Publisher provides the answer for accessing legacy applications from new Web applications and delivers a wide range of options for accelerating the time to market for new Web application projects requiring legacy access and integration:

  • Host Publisher can be used as a bean generator to create the Java Beans (Integration Objects) needed to provide legacy access for new Web applications.
  • Through its Enterprise Java Bean (EJB) support, Host Publisher makes host applications available to new EJB-based e-business applications.
  • New Web Services support enables the quick, easy extension of legacy applications to new industry-standard Web Services.
  • XML support includes both XML host access through Host Publisher generated Java Beans and XML access to entire native application screens, using the included XML gateway.

Host Publisher consists of two major components:

  • Host Publisher Studio
  • Host Publisher Server

Host Publisher Studio

Host Publisher Studio is a collection of task-oriented, easy-to-use GUIs that assist the Web-application builder in managing and creating Web-to-host projects. It uses task-oriented prompts to guide the user through the creation process, minimizing or eliminating the need for programming to accomplish these projects.

Studio automatically generates a Java Bean, called an Integration Object, which encapsulates legacy interactions and data retrieval. In addition, Studio can generate a corresponding EJB to access these legacy systems. New with Host Publisher V4 is the ability to selectively enable legacy applications and services as new Web Services.

You can use Studio to generate a fully customizable HTML Web page for modeling interaction with the Integration Objects and presenting the resulting data. The HTML Web page can be enhanced with Web authoring tools, such as WebSphere Studio, to meet corporate guidelines on style and image. Once the Web page is completed, you can publish it to Host Publisher Server for production access by end users.

Host Publisher Studio is provided on a separate CD assembly and runs on Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP operating systems.

The applications created with the common Host Publisher Studio will run unchanged in all supported environments: AIX, Sun Solaris, and Windows. Additional platform support is provided by Host Publisher for IBM eServer zSeries, and Host Publisher for IBM eServer iSeries, which are available as separate products. The ability to move from one operating system platform to another will allow you to move your workload to a higher-capacity platform as demands increase.

Host Publisher Server

Host Publisher Server provides the runtime environment for supporting Web applications created with Host Publisher Studio. Host Publisher Server is on a separate CD assembly and consists of run-time components such as:

  • Connection management
  • License monitoring
  • Run-time administration
  • Log and trace management

WebSphere Host Publisher requires and exploits the leading-edge WebSphere Application Server V4 run-time environment. The combination of WebSphere Application Server and Host Publisher delivers an unparalleled solution for enterprise-class legacy integration with new WebSphere e-business applications and host application extension to new Web users.

WebSphere Host Publisher V4 brings J2EE compliance to Web-to-host implementations. J2EE provides value by significantly reducing the cost and complexity of developing and deploying multitier solutions, resulting in services that can be rapidly deployed and easily enhanced.

A production use license for IBM WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition V4 is not included with WebSphere Host Publisher V4 but must be acquired with a separate product order.

Note: Host Publisher V4 does include a separate CD for the WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Developer Edition V4. The license associated with this program is for development use only and is not for production use. You are limited to the use of this program for internal evaluation and for the development, demonstration and testing of applications which use this program in accordance with its license agreements.

Scalability and High Availability

WebSphere Host Publisher exploits the load-balancing and high availability capabilities of the WebSphere Application Server workload management (WLM) function. WebSphere Application Server provides support for running multiple Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) on a single machine. JVMs that are clones of each other can be limited to one machine (vertical cloning) or can be spread across multiple machines (horizontal cloning). Both types of cloning provide two benefits:

  • Improved throughput, because requests can be distributed across multiple JVMs
  • Better fault tolerance, because when one JVM fails a user can still request that an application be processed by any of the remaining clones that can handle the request

Security

WebSphere Host Publisher delivers a broad range of security options. On the Web side of a Host Publisher implementation, all of the existing industry-standard Web security mechanism for securing access and authentication are enabled. This includes SSL for data encryption and client authentication. To existing legacy applications, Host Publisher will appear as a standard user of the application which enables you to leverage your existing legacy security systems, such as RACF® on IBM zSeries, to control access to these critical resources.

A critically important requirement when extending legacy applications to the general public is not just making the application easily available and easy to use, but also controlling user's access to application content and services. Host Publisher provides exacting control over which application options are exposed to the end user through its Studio navigational facilities. In addition, because the end user is never directly connected to the legacy application (the end user connects to Host Publisher which accesses the legacy system for the end user), the potential for the end user to wander to other applications is virtually eliminated.

WebSphere Host Publisher provides a feature called Express Logon that when used in conjunction with RACF on the IBM zSeries enables you to use Web browser certificates to log end users onto legacy applications, thus eliminating the need for individual end users to provide user IDs and passwords.

Web Services

Web Services provide an open industry-standard way for applications to connect and interact on the Web by enabling businesses to publish interfaces to their business processes, streamlining interaction with their organizational value net. It allows multiple divisions, trading partners, contractors, customers, and suppliers to connect business processes and create cross-enterprise transactions.

New with WebSphere Host Publisher V4 is the ability to quickly and easily extend your legacy applications, (which can be thought of as legacy services) as new Web Services. WebSphere Host Publisher Integration Objects and EJBs are now enabled as new Web Services. Host Publisher Studio has been enhanced to provide a selectable Web Services option so your existing Host Publisher skills can be leveraged in creating new Web Services. In addition, Host Publisher Studio now generates new Web Services-specific Java methods developed to optimize network performance and response time when deploying legacy services as new Web Services across a wide area network.

WebSphere Host Publisher is used in conjunction with WebSphere Studio Application Developer to create Web Services, build the corresponding Web Service Description Language (WSDL), register the Web Services within the Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) registry, and deploy the Web Service via WebSphere Application Server.

A key strength of the Web Services industry standard is that existing back-end implementations do not need to be changed. Your tested and operational core information technology structure can be reused without the effort, scheduling impact, and risk that would be involved in rework. The new Host Publisher Web Services support enables you to accomplish this quickly while leveraging your existing investment in Host Publisher skills.

Support for Web Services has been implemented in a number of IBM software products, including WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Studio. Now WebSphere Host Publisher enables you to develop Integration Objects and EJBs that can become parts of Web Services that can be deployed in the WebSphere environment.

WebSphere Portal Server

The WebSphere Portal family provides a secure, single point of interaction with diverse information, business processes, and people, personalized to a user's needs and responsibilities. This personalized single point of access to all necessary information resources reduces information overload, accelerates productivity, and increases Web site usage.

The 3270 and 5250 legacy information systems that drive today's businesses are important enterprise information resources. New with WebSphere Host Publisher V4 is a Host Publisher portlet that enables legacy content and services to quickly and easily be extended as new portal content. This will enable you to incorporate your huge inventory of legacy application content within the personalized single point of access provided by the WebSphere Portal.

The Host Publisher portlet delivers the state management capabilities needed to enable complex interaction with existing applications while enabling the navigational ease-of-use characteristics of the portal server.

For consistency with many other Webserver Portal portlets, the Host Publisher portlet will be delivered via download from the WebSphere Portal portlet Web site.

Accessibility by People with Disabilities

The following features support use by people with disabilities:

  • Operation by keyboard alone. This feature is supported by the Host Access and Application Integrator components for end user functions.
  • Documentation on accessibility features. Documentation on the keyboard accessibility feature is included as part of the Administrator's and User's Guide .

Product Positioning

WebSphere Host Publisher is a core component of IBM's market-leading WebSphere Host Integration Solution. It provides the HTML and WebSphere application enablement solution within this offering and complements IBM's WebSphere Host On-Demand capability to quickly and easily extend host applications to Web users through its Java-based emulator.

WebSphere Host Publisher focuses on consolidating multiple existing applications, without modification, to present a single integrated view to a Web browser. This leverages security, scalability, and availability features that are essential for the deployment of e-business applications. It delivers a quick and easy way for companies to implement e-business applications by extending existing applications to the Web. It is primarily intended for the legacy extension space with little or no new business logic. WebSphere tools, like WebSphere Studio, may be used to add new business logic to a Host Publisher implementation if needed.

WebSphere Host Publisher's ability to integrate with IBM's Java-based connectors, such as MQSeries®, delivers unlimited reach for customers as their back-end application needs change and expand over time.

WebSphere Host Publisher is part of IBM's comprehensive WebSphere portfolio of leading-edge e-business solutions and provides additional value-add when used in conjunction with other members of the WebSphere family. Examples include:

  • WebSphere Host Publisher is used in conjunction with WebSphere Studio Application Developer to quickly and easily extend existing legacy applications services as new Web Services.
  • WebSphere Host Publisher can be used with WebSphere Portal to extend existing legacy content as new portal content.
  • WebSphere Host Publisher can be used with WebSphere Transcoding Publisher to extend legacy application access to pervasive device users, such as cell phone and personal digital assistant users.
  • WebSphere Host Publisher can be used with WebSphere Voice Server to enable developers to quickly develop and deploy voice-enabled e-business solutions requiring legacy application access.

WebSphere Host Publisher V4 is referred to below as the "program."

The program consists of software components that are licensed pursuit to the terms of the IBM IPLA. These components are the Host Publisher Server and the Host Publisher Studio.

Except as provided below you are authorized to install and use one copy of the Host Publisher Server on the same machine for each valid PoE, notwithstanding the inclusion of multiple versions, releases and translations (including versions, releases and translations of a component for multiple operating systems) of Host Publisher Server in the packaging for the program. You must acquire a PoE for each central processing unit on each machine that has the ability to execute Host Publisher Server.

The Host Publisher Studio component of the program is used to customize and develop Host Publisher applications. You are allowed to install and use an unlimited number of copies of the program's Host Publisher Studio component within your enterprise for purposes of education or development or customization of your applications for use with the program. For individual application developer building, testing, evaluating, and demonstrating of Host Publisher applications, customers are authorized to install and use the Host Publisher Server for Windows NT or Windows 2000 on the same machine as the Host Publisher Studio component of the Program. Use for deployment of Host Publisher applications for production use is not permitted. This is a "development-use-only" authorization for the use of Host Publisher Server for Windows NT or Windows 2000.

The program contains sample code to demonstrate how to use Host Publisher technology (Sample Code). The following terms supersede any conflicting or inconsistent terms in this License Information or the IPLA with respect to the Sample Code.

Disclaimer of Warranty: The Sample Code may not be at the level of performance or compatibility of general available IBM products, and may be changed substantially in the future.

The sample code is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind either expressed or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranty of merchantability and fitness particular purpose. The entire risk arising out of the use or performance of this sample code remains with you. In no event will IBM be liable for any lost profits, lost savings, incidental or indirect damages or other economic consequential damages, even if IBM or its authorized supplier has been advised of the possibility of such damages. In addition, IBM and its suppliers will not be liable for any damages claimed by you based on any third-party claim.

Third-Party Code: The program contains, and future updates and fixpacks to the program may contain, certain third-party components that are provided to you under terms and conditions that are different from this Agreement, or that require IBM to provide you with certain notices and/or information. For each such third-party component, either IBM will identify such third-party component in the program's "Readme" or "License.Txt" file (or in an updated "Readme" or "License.Txt" file (or in an updated "Readme" or "License.Txt" file accompanying a fixpack or update), or in a file or files referenced in the "Readme" files (and shall include any associated license agreement, notices and other related information therein). You may find the "Readme" or "License.Txt" file on the media accompanying the program. The third-party component may contain, or be accompanied by, its own license agreement (for example, provided when installing or starting such component, or accompanying such component in a file entitled "Readme", "Copying", "License" or a substantially similar title, or included among the program's paper documentation, if any). Your use of each third-party component that contains or is accompanied by its own license agreement, or for which IBM has identified a licensed agreement in one of the above "Readme" or "License.Txt" files (or in a file or files referenced therein), will be subject to the terms and conditions of such other license agreement, and not this Agreement. By using or not uninstalling such third-party components after the initial installation of such third-party components (thereby giving you access to the applicable license agreements, notices and information), you acknowledge and agree to all such license agreements, notices and information, including those provided only in the English language. You agree to review any updated "Readme" or "License.Txt" files that accompanies updates and fixpacks to the program.

Note: Host Publisher V4 does include CDs for WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Developer Edition V4. The license associated with this program is for development use only and is not for production use. You are limited to the use of this program for internal evaluation and for the development, demonstration and testing of applications which use this program. This program is provided on a complimentary basis and support is not included with the WebSphere Host Publisher product package.
