Description

As part of the WebSphere offering, the IBM CrossWorlds solution helps companies maximize the business results from their e-business initiatives as well as their investments in applications and systems.

The IBM CrossWorlds solution offers functionality required by both the Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) and Business-to-Business Integration (B2Bi) markets so companies can easily automate business processes both inside and outside the company's firewall. Within one coherent framework, companies can address seemingly disparate integration efforts such as unifying customer data, automating business processes, and linking to Business Partners over the Internet.

The IBM CrossWorlds products are built on a patented, modular architecture that creates a common business object model, which is an application-independent "layer" of enterprise-wide data. For example, there is a centralized definition of customer data that reflects the separate types of customer information found in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), legacy, and other systems. As a result, a change to a customer information in one application will be reflected in all other applications. With integrated data, service and support are improved, as is the bottom-line.

The IBM CrossWorlds solution elegantly and comprehensively addresses the full spectrum of integration challenges.

The IBM CrossWorlds business integration software suite consists of four primary elements:

  1. IBM CrossWorlds InterChange Server

Open, built-in Java, IBM CrossWorlds InterChange Server (ICS) is a scalable, high-performance hub of the distributed hub and spoke architecture. One important benefit of ICS is that it gives customers one centralized and common view of enterprise-wide data.

In addition, ICS offers a comprehensive set of technical services, including system management, event management, repository services, error handling, transaction management, data transformation and messaging. For the customer it includes mission-critical reliability and availability, enterprise-level scalability and performance, as well as centralized system management, and configuration management.

  2. IBM CrossWorlds Full Toolset

The IBM CrossWorlds Full Toolset is a complete set of intuitive, visual and easy-to-use tools to provide customers both administrative and development support for system management, application connectivity and business process modeling. These tools are available on this release in the IBM CrossWorlds Full Toolset:

    • IBM CrossWorlds System Manager
    • IBM CrossWorlds System Monitor
    • IBM CrossWorlds Log Viewer
    • IBM CrossWorlds Business Object Designer
    • IBM CrossWorlds Relationship Designer

Connectivity is critical in establishing an enterprise-wide layer of data — being able to extract information from disparate sources within information systems. IBM CrossWorlds offers a wide variety of connectivity options that help customers extract information from packaged and legacy applications, databases, trading partners' systems and even from public information stores on the Web.

IBM CrossWorlds supports event-driven, real-time synchronous connections, asynchronous, loosely coupled connections with trading partners, synchronous on-demand connections to customers and even synchronous tightly coupled connections to trusted trading partners. Finally, to assist customers in connecting their audiences to their systems and applications through browser-based interactions, CrossWorlds supports a synchronous Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) based remote invocation mechanism called Access Interface.

  4. IBM CrossWorlds Collaborations

Companies automate their processes to address business challenges by saving time and labor, and improving efficiency and accuracy. Ideally, company-wide processes can be streamlined and then further optimized improving the efficiency of the entire enterprise.

There is no one application that can automate an entire business. A company can automate processes within sales, procurement, manufacturing, and human resources (HR) by building custom applications, or implementing third-party packaged applications. But, because these applications operate independently, companies experience bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and points of failure in the processes that connect vertical business functions.

The IBM CrossWorlds solution creates an application-independent "layer" of business logic, which can be assembled to create cross-functional processes and to span the enterprise according to operational needs. With IBM CrossWorlds, companies can choose to custom-build processes, or use one of the automated common processes the IBM CrossWorlds solution provides based on successful, past implementations.

Within the IBM CrossWorlds solution, there is one unified view of your company's business processes, one that is separate from the Sales Force Automation (SFA), ERP, or Supply Chain Management (SCM) applications supporting them. As a result, business processes can be extended across the enterprise, transcending stovepipe operations, points of failure and the costs associated with bridging systems by re-keying data manually. Enterprise-wide business processes are now easily adaptable and can be streamlined and optimized to improve efficiency and response times. With IBM CrossWorlds, applications are no longer hostage to IT infrastructure and can respond to new business opportunities. Below is a listing of collaborations available on this release:

Product Positioning

As part of the WebSphere offering, the IBM CrossWorlds solution further extends the unparalleled breadth of IBM's portfolio of e-business infrastructure software. The combined IBM CrossWorlds solution helps companies maximize the business results from their e-business initiatives as well as their investments in applications and systems.

The IBM CrossWorlds solution offers functionality required by both the Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) and Business-to-Business Integration (B2Bi) markets so companies can easily automate business processes both inside and outside the company's firewall. Within one coherent framework, companies can address seemingly disparate integration efforts such as tying customer data together, to automating business processes, and linking to business partners over the Internet.

Other integration products on the market typically have a makeshift architecture of separately-developed tools and modules that must be connected at each customer site. They are costly and difficult to implement and maintain, difficult to extend as a company's needs change, and ultimately provide no real long-term advantage over a collection of custom-coded interfaces.

The IBM CrossWorlds portfolio of products has several strong differentiators:

  • An industry-leading business integration server
  • A rich set of pre-built collaborations or predefined business process logic for easily extending and uniting processes
  • An easy-to-use graphical development environment and toolset which enables rapid end-to-end development, deployment, and maintenance of business objects and process
  • An extensive list of connectors, providing out-of-the-box access to many popular packaged applications for faster integration.

Using these products, companies can experience significant business benefits such as a single unified view of enterprise-wide data, regardless of the application or database where the information may reside. They can also gain the advantage of more flexible business processes that are more easily changed to accommodate business needs. With IBM CrossWorlds, processes are defined separately and exist independently of enterprise applications. Finally, a company can also easily include external trading partners in its business processes and leverage Internet-based trading networks and exchanges.

Installation and technical support for the product announced in this letter is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity by providing voice and/or electronic access into the IBM support organizations.

IBM includes Software Maintenance with each Program acquired during the Coverage Period. "Coverage Period" means the period commencing on the date you acquire the Program up to the first or second Anniversary Date, depending on whether you acquired coverage for one or two anniversaries. The Coverage Period for Software Maintenance acquired in the two months preceding an Anniversary Date will be extended to the next applicable Anniversary Date.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for both:

  • Routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions
  • Code-related questions — Assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Consult your IBM Software Support Guide for further details:

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for any of these three:

  • The design and development of applications
  • Your use of Programs in other than their specified operating environment
  • Failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this Agreement
