Description
CICS VSAM Recovery V3R1 (CICSVR) is an automated recovery tool that helps
you minimize the loss of VSAM data in the event of software, hardware, or
human error.
CICSVR uses logs to recover your VSAM data. CICSVR supports:
-
MVS system logger log streams
-
CICSVR SAM copies of MVS system logger log streams
-
CICS/ESA V4 forward recovery logs
-
The CICS system log
Up until now, CICSVR was primarily used as a CICS data recovery tool.
With this new version, CICSVR also provides recovery for your VSAM batch
applications. When enabled, CICSVR VSAM batch logging will log the
updates made to the VSAM spheres by batch applications to an MVS system
logger log stream. If the VSAM spheres are lost or damaged, CICSVR can
use the log records to recreate the spheres.
It is essential to be prepared before a disaster happens. With CICSVR,
you can take the necessary steps ahead of time to safeguard your data.
CICSVR Saves You Time and Eliminates Errors:
CICSVR is designed to facilitate the recovery of lost or damaged
VSAM data sets through the CICSVR ISPF dialog. You can navigate through
the dialogs, selecting the spheres you want to recover and the backups
you want to use. Behind the scenes, CICSVR executes jobs such as
LOGOFLOGS SCAN to get the latest information on the VSAM spheres from
CICS, and DFSMShsm restore or DFSMSdss copy or dump to get the latest
backup. Then, the dialogs generate a recovery job that you can submit
when you are ready to recover your VSAM spheres. The CICSVR dialogs
supply all the details (VSAM spheres, backups, and so on) and you select
what you want. It's that simple.
Complete Automation for DFSMShsm Backups and DFSMSdss Copies and Dumps:
You can use any backup and restore program with CICSVR but if you
use DFSMShsm or DFSMSdss, CICSVR provides full automation of your
recovery. With full automation, CICSVR displays the latest DFSMShsm
backup or DFSMSdss copy or dump for your sphere. If you do not want to
use the latest backup, you can get a list of all the DFSMShsm logical
backups or DFSMSdss logical copies or logical dumps for that sphere and
select the backup that you want from a list. Support for DFSMSdss
logical copies and logical dumps is new with CICSVR V3R1.
Recovery for Your Batch Updates:
CICSVR VSAM batch logging is new with CICSVR V3R1. It requires all
systems to be running as a sysplex, with the LOGR policy defined. When
enabled, it provides logging for VSAM data sets that are not currently in
use by other applications. CICSVR VSAM batch logging uses the new CICSVR
server address space to communicate with CICSVR and other DFSMS
components.
CICSVR VSAM batch logging calls the system logger to write the log
records to the MVS system logger log stream. The system logger provides
a common logging facility for all z/OS and OS/390 images, providing
greater 24 x 7 availability in the event that an image fails. The
coupling facility enables logging from throughout the sysplex to be
directed to a common log stream, if desired.
Once the records are logged, CICSVR can use them to recover your VSAM
spheres if they are lost or damaged. The VSAM spheres will be returned
to the exact state before the data was lost.
Reducing Recovery Time:
New in this version is the change accumulation feature. Change
accumulation significantly reduces the time it takes to forward recover a
VSAM sphere. After a backup has been made for a sphere, you can set up a
change accumulation batch job so that it is submitted at regular
intervals by a workload management product such as OPC/ESA. The change
accumulation batch job consolidates the forward recovery log records into
a change accumulation data set. Then, when a forward recovery is needed,
the change accumulation data set can be used in place of the forward
recovery log or log stream; CICSVR only needs to use the forward recovery
log or log stream to get the most recent log records (the records that
have not yet been consolidated by the change accumulation batch job).
Remote Site Recovery:
Special emphasis is made in this new version of CICSVR on setting up
and maintaining a remote disaster recovery site. New EXPORT and IMPORT
commands are introduced to make it easy to copy the essential data in
your RCDS so you can send it to your remote site and load it into your
remote site's RCDS.
Accessibility by People with Disabilities
The following feature supports use by people with disabilities:
-
Operation by keyboard alone
Euro Currency
These programs are not impacted by euro currency.
Value Unit Based Pricing
Value Unit based pricing will help to align the prices of these products
to the principle of the PSLC pricing curve which provides for a lower
price per MSU (millions of service units per hour) for larger capacities.
There is also be a price benefit when customers grow their capacity.
Additional capacity will based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) the
customer has already installed, that is, additional capacity will not be
priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the
capacity that is already installed.
Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be
exchanged/interchanged/aggregated with Value Units of another product.
International Program License Agreement (IPLA) and Subscription and
Support Considerations
IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but
not limited to an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity
for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more
economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It
is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value
Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.
Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product
license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the
country in which the agreement is made.
Product Positioning
CICS VSAM Recovery (CICSVR) is IBM's VSAM recovery tool for the OS/390
environment. CICSVR can recover lost CICS TS and CICS V4 VSAM data to
the exact state before the data was lost. CICSVR can also recover VSAM
data that was updated through batch applications using the CICSVR VSAM
batch logging feature. CICSVR is for organizations where the
availability and integrity of VSAM data is vital.

Compatibility:
If you are migrating from an earlier release level of CICSVR, you
should perform some migration actions, including a conversion of the
RCDS. These migration actions should be performed when you have
successfully completed SMP/E APPLY and ACCEPT of CICSVR.
To maintain the existing forward recovery capability for VSAM spheres,
when migrating from CICSVR/MVS V2R3 to CICSVR V3R1, minor changes must
be made to the JCL jobs and error exits. Refer to
CICSVR Implementation Guide
for more information on the migration utility.
If you are migrating to CICSVR V3R1 from a release prior to CICSVR V2R3,
refer to Chapter 4 in
CICSVR MVS/ESA Implementation Guide V2R3
for details.
CICSVR V3R1 is fully upward compatible with CICSVR V2R3.
CICSVR V3R1 supports CICS TS V1, or later and CICS V4 (CICS/ESA®)
forward recovery logs. CICSVR V3R1 does not support forward recovery of
a CICS TS or a CICS V4 VSAM data set using a CICS Autojournal.
CICSVR V3R1 and CICSVR V2R3 can coexist in the same MVS system, if they
have different RCDS data sets and are in separate libraries.
The RCDS data set is different between CICSVR V3R1 and previous releases.
A migration utility included with the product will convert an existing
RCDS from CICSVR V2R3 to CICSVR V3R1 format.
These actions are described under section "Migrating your RCDS from
CICSVR V2R3 to V3R1" in the
CICSVR V3R1 Implementation Guide
, SH26-4126.
Performance Considerations:
Performing a forward recovery using a change accumulation data set
can significantly reduce the time it takes to forward recover a VSAM
sphere when compared to performing a forward recovery without a change
accumulation data set.
The table that follows shows the reductions that were observed when a log
containing one million log records was processed; of these one million
log records, 800,000 updates were made to 200,000 records.
As an example of how to read the table, consider the KSDS row in Table 1.
This row shows that when performing a forward recovery using a change
accumulation data set, elapsed time was reduced 87% and CPU time was
reduced 57% when one million log records were processed and 800,000 of
the updates were made to 200,000 records.
Table 1
CICSVR V3R1 forward recovery:
-- % improvement with change accumulation
-- % improvement without change accumulation
VSAM data set type Elapsed Time CPU Time
KSDS 87% 57%
ESDS 93% 68%
RRDS 93% 62%
VRRDS 85% 59%
Test Environments
Performance measurement test runs for CICSVR V3R1 with change
accumulation and CICSVR V3R1 without change accumulation were completed
using the same test environments. The test environments included:
-
One million CICS V4 forward recovery log records
-
OS/390 V2R10
All measurements were run on an IBM 9672 Model RX6 (G5) in a
stand-alone OS/390 environment. All of the log records resided on IBM
RAMAC® 9392 connected to an IBM 3990-6 storage control unit.
The actual performance characteristics that may be experienced by any
specific user or for any specific VSAM data set depends on many factors,
including the number of updates made per record in the VSAM file. So,
the results may differ from user to user. In general, the more updates
made per record, the greater the improvement will be when a change
accumulation data set is used in the forward recovery.
IBM does not represent nor warrant that users will experience the same
changes in performance characteristics observed in these examples.
