Overview

IBM Tivoli® Data Protection for Enterprise Storage Server™ (ESS) Databases, a high-performance backup recovery solution, now provides online backup for DB2®, and exploits the IBM ESS disk subsystem with its new "FlashCopy" function. The online backup solution virtually eliminates backup-related performance impacts, downtime, and user disruption on the production host.

This solution is also available for Oracle databases.

How it Works

The IBM ESS is configured with a pair of source volumes and target volumes. The database is configured to reside on the source volumes of the IBM ESS. In order to perform a database backup, Tivoli Data Protection for ESS launches the "FlashCopy" function on the ESS to perform an instant copy of the source volumes to the target volumes. Following this FlashCopy procedure, the data on both sets of volumes is immediately available. Tivoli Data Protection for ESS, working hand-in-hand with either the Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle or the storage agent of DB2 Universal Database® (UDB), then reads the data from the target volumes and sends it over to the Tivoli Storage Manager server to create an application-aware backup. During this process, the application keeps running with virtually no impact on availability.

IBM Tivoli Data Protection for ESS Databases manages and controls this entire process. It seamlessly integrates with the databases, with the IBM ESS, with Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle or the storage agent of DB2 UDB, and with the performance proven Tivoli Storage Manager. This solution is designed to support 24 x 7 operation with minimum impact during backup.

Based on the Tivoli end of support policy, Tivoli support for V1.1 of Tivoli Data Protection for ESS for Oracle Databases will be discontinued 12 months after the planned availability of V1.2.

Description

Maximum data availability is becoming one of the top business priorities of most customers today. Applications need to have 24 x 7 access to business-critical data. Although periodic backups of this data need to be performed, customers demand that the backup window be as small as possible. Further, they also desire that backup/restore applications should also have a minimal impact on the primary application. IBM Tivoli Data Protection for Enterprise Storage Server Databases attempts to meet this customer demand of reducing/eliminating the downtime of a production UDB server (if the database resides on an IBM Enterprise Storage Server) for the purpose of obtaining a backup. The transfer of backup data is off-loaded from the (production) database server, and the Tivoli Storage Manager client scheduler is used to perform (automated) backups of that database. This is accomplished by exploiting the "FlashCopy" feature of the IBM Enterprise Storage Server, which provides a copy of a source physical disk on the target physical disk, and integrating it with Tivoli Storage Manager and UDB.

This addition to the Tivoli Data Protection product family provides a solution for backing up DB2 UDB or Oracle databases residing on an Enterprise Storage Server managed by database servers running on AIX® and includes the following:

  • Integration with Tivoli Storage Manager products
  • Support of IBM's FlashCopy
  • Exploitation of the Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle functionality

Integration with Tivoli Storage Manager Media Management Functions

All storage devices and media management capabilities of Tivoli Storage Manager are available to IBM Tivoli Data Protection for Enterprise Storage Server Databases. You can share the devices used for other backups, or give Oracle or DB2 exclusive use of certain devices and media. Lifecycle management of the media and generation of tape copies for off-site vaulting are supported.

Support of IBMs FlashCopy Volumes

IBM Tivoli Data Protection for Enterprise Storage Server Databases, V1.2 meets the customer demand of reducing or eliminating the downtime of a production DB2 server for the purpose of obtaining a backup. IBM FlashCopy is one of the Copy Services' features available in IBM's Enterprise Storage Server. FlashCopy gives the ability to create, in background mode, independently-addressable copies of logical volumes, or mirrored copies. The mirrored copies are not created until they are needed, and are available immediately after the command has been processed. They can be used to run simultaneous tasks in parallel with one another.

IBM Tivoli Data Protection for Enterprise Storage Server Databases integrates with the FlashCopy mirrored copies to provide high-performance, database-aware backup of a targeted application from a secondary host, while the production application remains online and fully available to users.

Online, Outboard Database Backup Using Second (Backup) Host

Through the use of mirrored copies connected to a second host, the production database remains accessible to the customer. Nearly all the processing occurs on the secondary host, almost completely eliminating the performance impact on the production database server.

Support of DB2s Standby Function

IBM Tivoli Data Protection for Enterprise Storage Server Databases, V1.2 provides support for the standby function of UDB to backup the requested database online. With this new UDB function, Tivoli Data Protection for IBM Enterprise Storage Server performs the DB2 backup of a user database from the cloned image to relieve the resources from the production system. In addition, Tivoli Data Protection for IBM Enterprise Storage Server also provides support for Subsystem Device Driver (SDD)/Data Path Optimizer (DPO) on the AIX host system.

Centrally Administered and Scheduled Backup Operations

From the Tivoli Storage Manager Server, scheduling facilities can be used to schedule automatic, unattended DB2 or Oracle backups from a FlashCopy. You can select when the backups occur; backups no longer have to be scheduled during off-peak hours or during maintenance windows.

All the products announced are designed to work in conjunction with IBM DB2 and Oracle databases. The IBM Tivoli Data Protection for Enterprise Storage Server Databases product (5698-ESO), is supported on the AIX platform only.

Hardware Requirements

IBM Tivoli Data Protection for Enterprise Storage Server Databases (5698-ESO) requires IBM Enterprise Storage Server 2105, model Exx or Fxx, with one FlashCopy feature 1830-1835, selected to match expected FlashCopy backup requirements. These are supported on the AIX® platform.

Software Requirements

Required supporting software for IBM Enterprise Storage Server, including AIX 4.3.3, will be prerequisite for installation of 5698-ESO.

DB2 Universal Database® Version 7.1, FixPack 4, or later, is required for using IBM Tivoli Data Protection for Enterprise Storage Server Databases in a DB2® environment, while Oracle 8.1.5 and Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle 2.2 are required for using IBM Tivoli Data Protection for Enterprise Storage Server Databases in an Oracle environment

Enterprise Storage Server CopyServices CLI is prerequisite for all installations of IBM Tivoli Data Protection for Enterprise Storage Server Databases. Tivoli Storage Manager, V4.1 and above with the Managed System for LAN feature, is prerequisite for all installations of 5698-ESO.

Tivoli Systems Support

Although the first year of support is included in the product price, a no-charge (NC) order must be placed using program number 5698-SPT specifying feature number 9001 for asset registration and the appropriate First Year Standard Support — NC feature number. This 5698-SPT order establishes entitlement records worldwide. If a 5698-SPT order is not placed, the customer will not be entitled to support even during the first year of a license.

Before the end of the first 12 months support period, customers will be notified of their support renewal options. Unless the customer notifies IBM/Tivoli to discontinue or alter the level of support currently being received, support will automatically be renewed for annual billing at the same level as selected in the first year. Once the subsequent year support feature numbers are in place, renewals are automatic and billed annually unless support is cancelled by the customer.

PA Software Maintenance

Software Maintenance (called Support for Tivoli products outside of PA) is included with each product authorization acquired under PA.

Software Maintenance provides an easy and effective way by which you have access, during the coverage period, to eligible new versions and releases and to remote technical support for your covered products.

The technical support included in Software Maintenance provides remote support during normal business hours in your country or location as well as access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for mission-critical (severity 1) problems.

With Software Maintenance, you receive the following technical support benefits:

  • Telephone access and/or electronic access via the Web to an IBM Customer Support Center
  • Support for routine, short duration installation and usage ("how-to") questions and code-related problems
  • Support during normal country business hours, namely prime shift hours, Monday through Friday, excluding national or statutory holidays
  • Support for mission-critical (severity 1) problems during non-prime shift hours, namely all hours outside normal country business hours including national and/or statutory holidays
  • Two hour response time objective during prime shift for voice and electronic submission. The response objective for critical/emergency problems during offshift is also two hours.
  • Access to hints, tips, and frequently asked questions
  • Access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Open Authorized Technical Caller list to submit problems to IBM Support Centers on your behalf. Open to any number of technical specialists within your IS organization. Each caller must be registered through the IBM problem submission Web site in order to submit problems. Problem submission is handled by the Site Technical Contact as listed on the Passport Advantage enrollment form.
  • eCare for Software is an initiative designed to enhance your electronic support experience by providing the following advantages:

PA allows you to have a common anniversary date for Software Maintenance renewals, simplifying management and budgeting for eligible new versions and releases, (and for related technical support) for your covered products. The anniversary date, established at the start of your PA Agreement, recurs on an annual basis while your PA Agreement remains in effect. However, regardless of when Software Maintenance is acquired, the coverage period for Software Maintenance is always up to the anniversary date specified in the acquisition.

Software Maintenance renewals offer you favorable pricing to continue your coverage without interruption.
