Overview

Tivoli® NetView Performance Monitor for TCP/IP (NPM/IP) offers a full-function automated approach to managing your TCP/IP IBM e(logo)server zSeries system and connected IP network. NPM/IP can help you automatically identify and reduce network resource congestion, and assist you in optimizing your IP networks, minimizing downtime, and increasing application performance, availability, and service.

Easy to Install

Typically, NPM/IP can be installed, configured, and run in most environments in less than one day. This can result in improved operations and improved help desk productivity.

New in this Release

V1.3 provides enhancements in the user interface. The Web browser, the preferred user interface, now has the same function as the Windows® graphical interface.

New features include:

  • Support for the new z/OS™ V1.2 Open Systems Adapter (OSA) Express performance Management Information Base (MIB), providing details on the direct movement of data from the LAN to the z/OS system
  • A new connection expert view showing a one page perspective of system activity
  • The ability to capture real-time data to VSAM files resulting in reports without time lapses.

End of Support

Based on the Tivoli end of support policy, Tivoli support for V1.2 of NetView Performance Monitor for TCP/IP will be discontinued November 9, 2002.

Description

NPM/IP V1.3 provides the following enhancements:

  • Parity of Windows and Java interfaces. Four functions available in the Windows graphical interface were not available with the Browser/Servlet graphical interface. This release adds the ability to issue Communications Storage Manager (CSM) and VTAM® formatted commands directly from NPM/IP.

    Automatic traceroutes can be issued from the host, enhancing the ability to quickly resolve performance issues. Details on FTP data allows a quick response to hung and failed FTP sessions.

  • Support for OSA Private MIB. A new OSA Performance MIB is supported with z/OS V1.2. NPM/IP will support this MIB and provide formatted MIB information on the performance health of this critical zSeries connection.
  • Capture of data to VSAM in real time. Data in VSAM files required the execution of a job stream in order to move data to the dataset. This prevented customers from having reports without time lapses, resulting in their ability to view both real-time and historical data in a single report.
  • Alerts by time range. Alerts can now be set to be generated for given time periods. This allows alert suppression for known outages and non-critical time spans.
  • Connection expert. While NPM/IP provided a tremendous amount of information regarding the health and well-being of the system, it was sometimes difficult to put this in perspective. With connection expert, application status can be seen from a single screen and drill downs allow easy access to detailed information.
  • Stabilization of the Windows graphical interface. Due to the overwhelming customer acceptance of the Browser/Servlet graphical user interface, this will be the last release of NPM/IP to include the Windows interface.

NetView Performance Monitor for TCP/IP V1.3 uses the security and auditability features of the operating system software.
