Description

What's New in V4.0

Powerful Web Services

V4.0 delivers the broadest enablement of enterprise applications and assets to Web services via its unparalleled connectivity and interoperability options:

  • Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) enables e-business applications to communicate with the UDDI business registry.
  • Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) provides a common format for transporting messages to and from a UDDI registry.
  • XML enables flexible and interactive application communications.
  • Web Services Description Language (WSDL) enables any Java-based application to interoperate with Web services applications.

These integrated Web services extend WebSphere leadership in Web-based distributed transactions to dynamic e-business solutions. Coupled with the upgraded XML parser, based on the open source Apache Xerces product and Apache Xalan database, Web service support provides a high degree of flexibility within the foundation Web application server.

New Platform Support

The Linux (Red Hat and SuSe) workstation platform is now supported with consistent function and capabilities provided across all of the platforms supported. The expanded list of platforms also includes:

  • Microsoft Windows NT®
  • Windows® 2000
  • AIX®/6000
  • HP-UX
  • iSeries

Rich J2EE Open Standards Implementations

Full J2EE certification is only the beginning, with rich turbo-charged enterprise Java implementations built-in and the full range of Java-based APIs and protocols supported. The most significant Java 2 compliance contributions in V4.0 include Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 1.1 component technology and an upgrade of the Java Developers Kit (JDK) base to JDK 1.3 across all support operating system platforms. EJB 1.1 provides more flexibility by using XML-formatted descriptor information for increased levels of connectivity and control. The Java security APIs have been improved upon as well within the distributed security model.

Connectivity

J2C Resource Adapters: WAS V4.0 includes a Beta level of the J2EE Connector Architecture based on the current version of the specification, expected to be finalized later this year. Connector support cannot be put into production.

Java Database Connectivity (JDBC)

  • Consistent method of calling application and resource adapters and connectors
  • Emerging de facto open standard for managing heterogeneous enterprise systems

Java Message Service Extended Architecture (JMS-XA): JMS-XA enables coordinated transactions through reliable, asynchronous messaging with MQSeries®.

Interoperability

Powerful interoperability between Web services and J2EE enables key solution offerings for collaboration, business-to-business, portal serving, content management, commerce, and pervasive computing. Open, flexible application deployment with a rich set of application execution services is integral to any WebSphere solution offering. WAS/Adv Ed is a core element of these offerings, and in turn, provides compatibility and interoperability with other key products. These programs include:

  • Lotus® Domino™ for e-collaboration
  • WebSphere Commerce Suite for e-commerce
  • WebSphere Integrator for business-to-business communications and Web services applications
  • MQSeries for reliable and asynchronous messaging
  • WebSphere Everyplace™ Suite for pervasive and mobile computing
  • WebSphere Business Components
  • VisualAge® for Java
  • WebSphere Studio for development

Turbo-Charged Performance and Scalability

WAS provides extensive performance, scaling, security, and control for your advanced e-business applications. New performance tuning wizards are provided, along with improved resource and log analyzers, to help optimize your transactional Web sites. A new Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI) cache is provided in V4.0 that stores name server requests on behalf of Web applications deployed in WebSphere. The result is that for applications requiring many name server calls, application speed can be increased up to two or three times.

With enhancements to the connection pooling algorithms and support for dynamic reloading of EJB components, WAS/Adv Ed provides a highly-scalable and high-performance deployment environment.

Superior Security with Dynamic, Interactive Web Applications Serving

For additional policy management over and above what IBM provides today with our distributed security model, WAS/Adv Ed now provides an interface that applications can leverage to interact with the WebSEAL component of Tivoli® Policy Director. This API enables a Web application running in WebSphere to call the Policy Director product for coexistence with existing user and application policies and for an added level of authorizations for your server-side execution environments.

Also, the Open Servlet Engine, which allows re-direction of transaction requests from a Web server residing outside a firewall or within a DMZ to a WAS inside a firewall within an intranet environment, has been enhanced for more secure connections through the firewall by this leveraging.

Transaction Management

The EJB engine, supporting the latest EJB technology, monitors and controls containers used within the server. Persistent storage for transactional EJB components includes support for DB2®/400 A key attribute of WAS/Adv Ed is its transaction management and application execution management. Enhancements include:

  • Extensive logging and tracing facilities
  • Online transaction debugger
  • Application assembly tool, application migration aids, and enhancements to the administrator client
  • The ability to manage, control, and coordinate multiple transactions is greatly enhanced

User-Friendly With One-Touch Installation

One of the most important focus areas has been ease-of-use across installation, administration, and product documentation. As a result, WAS/Adv Ed has a comprehensive and accurate Web-based documentation center that users can take advantage of right from the start. The installation and administration procedures improved usability while still maintaining a rich and flexible set of selectable configurations and prerequisites for tailored, open, and complete solutions.

A separately-installable, EJB client environment application has been added in V4.0, allowing for easier setup on a Web client machine of an EJB-compatible environment. This allows direct invocation of EJB component applications from client machines, bypassing the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) path through a Web server. The result is much faster execution, with more direct communications with EJBs and a shorter code path.

JavaMail

WAS supports JavaMail Version 1.1.3 and the JavaBeans Activation Framework (JAF) Version 1.0.1. In WAS, JavaMail technology is supported in all Web application components, namely: servlets, JSPs, EJBs and application clients.

The JavaMail APIs model a mail system. These APIs provide a platform and protocol independent framework to build Java-based, e-mail client applications. The JavaMail APIs only provide general mail facilities. To implement specific protocols such as sending, receiving, and storing mail, these APIs require service providers. Service providers for SMTP and IMAP are provided with WAS. A service provider for POP3 is available from Sun.

Building on a Firm Foundation

This new version is a consistent e-business application deployment environment with a rich set of application services across a comprehensive list of operating platforms and implementations of leading-edge Java technologies and APIs. Included is improved support for the beans scripting framework to benefit users who generate applications with scripting. WAS/Adv Ed focuses on open standards, Web services, robust security and connectivity to deliver a powerful, high-performance Web application server that is integral to solution offerings for commerce, collaboration, business-to-business and content management.

Application and Migration Tools

WAS/Adv Ed offers outstanding application and migration tools, including:

  • Extensive logging and tracing facilities
  • An online transaction debugger
  • A deployment tool that is accessible through the administration user interface and from the command line
  • An application assembly tool used to define and create deployment of descriptor information for J2EE application modules and assembling all required application components to build those modules.
  • A resource analyzer that is a stand-alone performance monitoring tool
  • A performance tuner wizard that provides an administrator a step-by-step guide for tuning key performance parameters
  • A migration tool that offers:
    • Migration of configuration information from existing 3.0 and 3.5 environments
    • Migration of configuration information from WebSphere 4.0 Advanced Single Server Edition
    • Basic application conversion to J2EE compliant applications
