Overview

Tivoli® SecureWay® User Administration helps reduce costs and provides a single view of user account data providing functions such as centralized password management, and the control of hundreds of user attributes on a wide variety of operating systems, directories and applications. This release extends this model with a new toolkit that allows for further expansion in a simple, efficient manner. Also included in this release are enhancements to audit functions.

Tivoli SecureWay User Administration has always been flexible, using features such as default and validation policy, and action scripts. Now, expanding the scope of user administration and integration into existing processes is made simpler through a new Endpoint Toolkit. The Application Management Toolkit makes it simpler to add most types of applications to User Administration's centralized management model. This toolkit provides a management endpoint that is customizable through Perl scripting. Anyone with a reasonable understanding of Perl, and the application to be managed, can add that application to User Administration. This endpoint works with Tivoli's single-agent architecture to continue the use of a single mechanism for communication between the management application and managed target.

The additional audit features in this release enhance the data gathering process for administrative functions, as well as, the collection of data for reporting purposes.

Description

Each person in an organization can be defined in a Tivoli SecureWay User Administration record. This record can hold the attributes used to define the user in a wide variety of environments. Additionally, policy-based features in record management allow most of the attributes to be updated automatically as other user data is changed. For example, when a new user is added, the person's name may be used to define a suitable account name on each platform. The name might also be used to generate home directories on operating systems. The department attribute may be used to determine what groups the person belongs to and so on.

Tivoli SecureWay User Administration was built to be flexible. Many options exist to enhance the use of this single-per-person approach. This release adds a new tookit that makes it easier to extend the records with new fields. It is simpler to control any application that can be driven via a command line interface, from UNIX® and Microsoft™ Windows® systems. Tivoli SecureWay User Administration provides interfaces that allow it to be driven as part of a larger people-management process. For example, a Human Resources process may feed into Tivoli SecureWay User Administration to generate new accounts when a person joins a company — or perhaps more significantly — old accounts get deleted when a user leaves. Another implementation option would have Tivoli SecureWay User Administration as the central driving force, and would see that Human Resources updates took place alongside those of account information on operating systems. The new toolkit is one of a number of well-supported interfaces to customize Tivoli SecureWay User Administration to work with your existing processes.

Auditing administrator activity has always been central to Tivoli systems management, and in this release, the level of detail available is greater than ever before. Also added are new reporting features allowing administrative data to be collected in formats that are easy to import and export for use in a variety of reporting and charting applications.

Although it is a powerful stand-alone application, Tivoli SecureWay User Administration integrates tightly with other Tivoli SecureWay products. As user data is added, it can automatically define security groups maintained by Tivoli SecureWay Security Manager, instantly integrating account management with role-based access control administration. The integration with Tivoli SecureWay Policy Director enables the creation of Policy Director accounts alongside all the other endpoints. In a single action, you can create a user account with Web, MQSeries® and custom application access (through Policy Director), create operating system accounts, create application accounts, and perform directory data updates — all from the same central view of user data.

Centralizing user account information provides other capabilities such as the administration of passwords. A single view of accounts allows the rest of a password across all platforms, performed by the user themselves, or an administrator from any compatible Web browser. You may also use the external interfaces to drive Tivoli SecureWay User Administration to make the changes from within an existing process.
